How horrifying that a submarine carrying 5 people has gone missing. Apparently there’s only 96 hours of air on the submarine when it sets off. The...

For someone who has very little understanding of physics, what are the chances of bodies being recovered? Would they have imploded too if the sub did?

I don’t mean to be graphic but I read somewhere that they would have been crushed to the thickness of a razor blade. Instantly and painlessly. The brain wouldn’t have had time to register anything

At this stage, this is the best outcome. They would have been killed instantly rather than suffering for 5 days.

Just a shame that the CEO was there too, and didn't have time to contemplate the consequences of his idiocy that cost these people their lives. It's the people left behind who will suffer.

To be honest I was really hoping the CEO would come out alive and answer for all these ...

Can we draw a line under the RIP/virtue signalling/I'm reporting you nonsense.

Will the press conference be live on sky or BBC?

Agreed. It's extremely undignified, especially in light of the current updates on the debris found, which seems to be passing some people by.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I think if it were an implosion, there will be nothing to recover.

The fact that they wouldn't have known that the sub had even been damaged is an enormous comfort.

Agreed. Although I just read a piece about Harding on Sky and it seems he has been in a sub before to the bottom of the Mariana Trench which is even deeper. I'm a little surprised he didn't share the safety concerns of his friend who dropped out because he did seem to have a decent level of experience. Maybe not as much as some but he was more than just a tourist.

FernGully43 · 22/06/2023 18:57

Does anyone know/could anyone guess if it were an implosion on the way down (or at the Titanic), does this mean there was something wrong with the sub to cause it to implode? (Like a fault / something broken) or is it more likely they drifted too far down?
Or is either case possible.

Do you think David Mearns has been removed from the Explorers club, for being a bit of a twat and ungentlemanly?

He was informed as a friend and then decided to break it to the world. Bad form.

Unfortunately, I have to agree. He's been all over the news for days (fair enough) but was sat there in the Sky news studio reading out messages he was receiving. It just felt grim, like he was rushing to be first to release this information. How does he know that all family had been informed before he declared it to the world?

HereComesMaleficent · 22/06/2023 18:58

In the nicest possible way, if they have been killed by a catastrophic hull failure. It would have been instant. I think that was a better way to go than slowly running out of oxygen for days.

No idea, no time to register their fate, just a flash and it was over.

hannsmum · 22/06/2023 18:51

Oh Lord! Not the news I was hoping to hear! Was actually still believing a miracle could happen 😟

It was the best outcome for those on Board.

I read it would have been over before they even really noticed.

thats what I thought. Other than survival this is the best option they had. I’m glad they would not have known or suffered, particularly the young boy. If I was his mum I would rather the sub imploded than he have been trapped for days banging.

But what about this "banging" that was picked up by sonar then ?

The thought they did not even know (or may noit have known) conforts me a very great deal.

Totally agree. I always think the same with plane crashes too. Please let it happen so quick that you don’t know or else fall unconsciousness swiftly.

The rather smug grin emoji and the explanation mark are frivolous and unnecessary.

I agree

Florissante · 22/06/2023 19:02

I am sorry that the men died but at least they died quickly and painlessly. My condolences to their families.

No one has been able to confirm the source of the banging.

Same. Also reported them.

Do you think those poor people are still alive?

im sure I read that the navy came to the conclusion it was likely to be normal ocean noise but I can’t remember if that was verified

hannsmum · 22/06/2023 19:04

@topnoddy to be honest having read about previous submarine search and rescue missions , and how the same banging noises were heard but they later found out there were underwater noises from bio matter etc , then I wasn't too hopeful based on that info

SunshinyDay1 · 22/06/2023 19:04

3 planes picked up the banging though

Every half hour.

We don't kmow when it imploded.

It might have beeb today because of the enormous pressure on it for soo long.

I'm wondering what the rational behind slow alerts to authority the moment it went lost have been.

It's literally milliseconds. A mercy compared to the alternatives.

I agree

I think the explanation was that previous subs had been lost in the past but came back up anyway .

When it was time for this to return and it didn't, it was reported lost so delaying by about 5 hours or so o believe

I hope it wasn’t today. I did wonder if the reason they found the debris so quickly was that they heard the sound of an implosion which allowed them to pinpoint the location.

I thought the same thing tbh. Even Mark Austin looked awkward. And then, the BBC probably had no option but to report the exact same thing about 15 mins later, or they’d have looked very slow (to wait until 8pm press conference).

As another poster said, it was grim viewing, and the relatives must have felt completely wretched watching this all unfold live.
