Reports have said that they’re searching an area twice the size of Connecticut.
Connecticut is 70 miles wide and 110 miles long - a very small state.
My husband and I drove through it from south to north in a very short while.

It’s been since Sunday - I don’t have high hopes. However, I hope for their families and loved ones sakes that they’ll be okay.

I read that the area has expanded to the size of Wales. But it's Wales in the pitch black and under water, filled with potentially dangerous objects and they're trying to find something the size of a small transit van. Not good.

bluewanda · 21/06/2023 21:55

Perhaps being rich, being used to the best in life and used to the high price tag of luxury it lured some of the passengers into imagining a greater level of safety.

Just like the Titanic with the claim it was “unsinkable”.

Is that the one who went to a concert the other night?

The step son doesn't seem to have bonded with the step dad that well it seems.

It's so weird that actual strangers have more empathy than the stepson

Dinobore · 21/06/2023 21:53

Well yes pretty much, as much as I hope they are found safe and well (sadly seems doubtful) I don't think the military should have their tech and capabilites compromised for this.

In that case I'd have thought bringing Magellan in would have been a good idea — they know the area and there isn't the same sensitivity as there is with the military.

53andABitPodgy · 21/06/2023 21:56

Maybe his step dad is not a very nice man, who treats his mum nicely, and made his childhood a misery.

Maybe, but there's no need to be so public with his contempt. It's just not the done thing and says more about him than it does his stepfather.

dogsarelife · 21/06/2023 21:59

I can't stop thinking about it. Those poor people.

SophiaElizabethGrace · 21/06/2023 21:59

The journalist who was invited on a dive in 2020 said that the Titan got caught on one of the Titanic's propellers. He said that it took a while for the pilot to free the sub. Afterwards he found out that the pilot was an ex MiG pilot (and therefore v highly trained). He also said that everyone had a job to do on the dive.

The point about the pilot begs the question how trained the CEO is in piloting the craft - afterall he appears to have opted out of making the sub so that it met existing regulations and seems to be a bit of a loose cannon in terms of his approach towards certain aspects concerning safety.

500 people died off the coast of Greece just a few days ago. Desperate people, at least 100 children. No international rescue attempts for them.

darkmodeon · 21/06/2023 22:00

Just thinking out loud - but if one of the crew has had a medical incident and sadly passed then there would be more oxygen.

Possibly, but apparently this is a guy that threatened a mass shooting at a rave and went to jail for stalking.

Brian isn’t so great himself.

Snowy2022 · 21/06/2023 22:00

Lightbulb moment!!!

For the FIRST TIME, I now FULLY understand why the French authorities and/or passing big vessels in the Channel escort migrant boats and/or hand them over at sea to British authorities to help bring them safely to English shores. All this at a huge amount of public resources (our taxes!).

Some have paid lots of money understanding or not understanding the risks as some are children or uneducated. The majority of them, if not all, have embarked on a journey of this nature for the first time and have never been in a flimsy boat at sea before; therefore, no previous experience to draw on.

IT IS A RESCUE operation just like any other. Long may that continue!!

This has been discussed in all 3 of these threads several times.

TheTERFnextDoor · 21/06/2023 22:02

If the sub is on the surface "bobbing around", will it be thrashing the men from side to side or floating calmly?

RiseYpres · 21/06/2023 22:02

Exloony · 21/06/2023 21:03

The definition of tragedy is "an event causing great suffering, destruction, and distress, such as a serious accident, crime, or natural catastrophe."

I think we can surely agree this fits that definition.

Honestly the linguistic semantics over the correct definition of 'tragedy' sickens me.

People will most likely die. This is tragic. A mother (indeed 5 mothers) are about to lose their children. If it could have been forseen, so fucking what? It's a tragedy.

Itsadogone · 21/06/2023 22:03

I can’t stop thinking of what I’ll be doing at lunch time tomorrow and how by then there will be no way of saving them 😔

If the banging was heard from the equipment at the surface does that mean they aren’t as deep as the 4000km or could banging realistically be heard that far away? My heart sank this morning weirdly when I saw the news because I can’t stop thinking of them in there, probably knowing there’s no point but trying to communicate anyway, not even sure if people will be picking it up. If it was me I would be getting so angry just praying someone would come and help me (even if it was impossible to do) ☹️

Bunnycat101 · 21/06/2023 22:04

I can’t imagine what the 19yo’s mother is going through. In some ways it might be more comforting if the sub was never found as you could tell yourself there was an instant explosion etc. I cannot comprehend what it must be like if they are still alive and waiting for the oxygen to run out.

I would also expect that there will be quite serious security concerns re sub capability and national security. I’m sure the authorities will know much more than is being said and would never reveal their most sensitive kit even if it might be useful for the rescue. Logically you have 5 people who are most likely to die anyway and difficult relationships with China and Russia. They’d not put national security at risk for the titan rescue.

The more I read this story the more absurd it gets. The step son of the billionaire guy is tweeting stuff like this:

Hamish Hardings Stepson is operating out of another dimension. Zero emotional intelligence, or he simply doesnt care and cant be bothered to hide it. I get we cope with situations differently but I thought going to a Blink182 gig 2 days ago, looking very happy, was off key. Now he's immersing his sorrow with his favourite OnlyFans girl...publicly...wtf.
