But Magellan were ready to fly over on Mon afternoon - they had UK clearance and a transporter plane on standby but the US refused to give them clearance. They would have been in St John's on Mon evening and could have been onsite today.

I think that step son's Mum met Hamish Harding later in life. He lives in San Diego and she lived in Dubai. So it may be that he's not had much of a relationship with him. It also seems from his Facebook that he's had some significant challenges in his life. Not making excuses....

500 people died off the coast of Greece just a few days ago. Desperate people, at least 100 children. No international rescue attempts for them.

This old chestnut again...

Sadly people die in tragic circumstances everyday. Sadly not everything can be reported.

If the sub is on the surface "bobbing around", will it be thrashing the men from side to side or floating calmly?

I'd imagine if the weather conditions are bad (which I think they are, since there was only a small window of good weather for the sub to go down to the wreck in the first place) then yes, it wouldn't be smooth. :(

I don't think it has anything to do with them being billionaires, that just happens to be one of the twists to this. It's a very unusual story, and the key thing I think is that it's ongoing. There's a will-they-won't-they to it, a race against time. So many people are kind of living with it, maybe praying and hoping.

In the recent Greek ship migrant tragedy it had happened before the world knew about it. And however unfair it is to those who lost their lives to a lot of people it becomes just another news item. That's not to say that there aren't also a lot of people who do care.

Humans are attracted to novelty, and this is a novel situation.

In 1987, an 18-month old girl named Jessica fell down an eight-inch-diameter well in her aunt’s back yard in Texas.
The entire United States became captivated over the next 58 hours of her rescue.
There’s something fascinating about people who go missing or who get trapped and need rescuing to the public at large.
It happens every time. Remember the Thai cave boys?

I can’t stop thinking of what I’ll be doing at lunch time tomorrow and how by then there will be no way of saving them 😔

If the banging was heard from the equipment at the surface does that mean they aren’t as deep as the 4000km or could banging realistically be heard that far away? My heart sank this morning weirdly when I saw the news because I can’t stop thinking of them in there, probably knowing there’s no point but trying to communicate anyway, not even sure if people will be picking it up. If it was me I would be getting so angry just praying someone would come and help me (even if it was impossible to do) ☹️

I was thinking the same. I'm going to sleep soon and if there's no good news upon waking, I think most will accept we've run out of time (although I know it realistically is already hopeless...I'm still hoping for a miracle).

Hamish Harding is dying/dead on a submersible and meanwhile Brian’s out here at a Blink 182 gig, picking fights with Cardi B, and shooting his shot at only fans models on twitter.

It gets worse. I wish I hadn't opened the link on here to OceanGate's website. This is an extract from their FAQ:

(They call their paying punters a.k.a. the billionaires "Mission Specialists")

As a Mission Specialist, you will not just be ‘along for the ride’. During these authentic expeditions, you may opt-in to roles that you want to learn or that you already have an aptitude for – with training and coaching provided throughout your mission.
Role availability may vary depending on the expedition you join and the specific mission objectives. See the lists below for typical roles on each mission.

  • Communications and Tracking
Assist the pilot with sub-to-surface communications.
  • Submersible Service
Participate in servicing the submersible after dive operations.
  • Dive Planning
Assist in operational dive planning.

OMG given the risks involved (and the number of death mentions in their waivers), would you want some rich person who'd just had a bit of training on the boat that week helping with the sub to surface comms (no wonder it fails) or dive planning and servicing the sub afterwards?! 😯I know it's probably all sales BS but if I was paying 1/4 million dollars to risk my life, I wouldn't want some random other punter who'd maybe had a few hours training getting anywhere near this stuff!

Oh this is like ZSL’s “Zoo keeper for a day” experiences. Which are for 8 year olds. The customers will not be doing anything unsupervised, and a trained mechanic will go back and do it all again properly afterwards. It is just marketing fluff.

In that case I'd have thought bringing Magellan in would have been a good idea — they know the area and there isn't the same sensitivity as there is with the military.

Theory I've heard on that (so right/wrong, don't know) is that the thinking a day or two back was at best is there might potentially be one shot at a rescue.

Out of all the possible assets world wide y chance the French vessel L'Atlante (?) was best placed to get to the scene PDQ with all on board that might be required.

OTOH getting Magellan on site was supposedly logistically much more complex, and all that had the potential to absorb effort/time that would be better used assisting the French vessel.

So potentially the same mistake the Russians made with the Kursk that cost all those men their lives. I guess they're just seem as collateral damage.

Unlike most of MN I'm far from an expert but there are some key differences - the Kursk's crew almost certainly could have been rescued if the Russians had a accepted international help where as it seem the odds of even finding the Titan are pretty slim. It also appears that the Russians were not protecting an unknown bit of tech whereas it seems from the previous recovery of aircraft from the sea floor that the US do have something that they perhaps don't want to reveal to other nations. I'm not saying this is the right approach (I don't know enough to make that call) I was just speculating as to why they may be reluctant to expose their rescue efforts to all comers.

🫠

For Brian it seems he's living his best life.

For Hamish, not so much.

tortoishelll · 21/06/2023 22:12

Brian is behaving repulsively. It's actually very disturbing.

PerfectYear321 · 21/06/2023 22:13

You couldn't pay me to be bolted into that thing on dry land, never mind diving to the depths of the ocean. Oh my god

🫠

Am I correct in thinking that Brian wasn't raised by Hamish? ie I'm wondering how close they are?

Brian has said on Twitter that he has ASD. I wonder if now would be the time for someone to suggest that he steps away from Twitter. I can't see the tweets he's receiving getting any kinder especially as people are uncovering details about his jail time.

HH is obviously just his mother’s husband. He doesn’t see him as a father or even a family member.
Still bad form though.

“ think there is something about people being trapped and the efforts people go to save them.

Remember Apollo 13 - and the interest and hope around the world in bringing them back home.

It must say something to the human psyche.”

Absolutely! Plus it’s a mystery, and when it is a few people, we can “know” them all a little bit from news features etc.

Same when searching for survivors in earthquakes etc - there is jubilation/despair when each individual is found/a rescue doesn’t happen in time.

Yes, and the fact they're in trouble at the Titanic wreck site, the Titanic disaster has fascinated many people for a long time. It was a very common belief for a long time (and still is for some people) that Titanic was cursed, this feeds into that narrative.

It's really is disturbing because the thought of the torment they must be going through makes me feel panicky just as a stranger. I can't imagine actually knowing the people and being so cold-hearted about it. He sounds unhinged

Butchyrestingface · 21/06/2023 22:17

Currents could have carried it in almost any direction. It is pitch black down there, too, and the subm may have drifted under part of the Titanic itself, and not be in open view even if they are in the right area.

Supposedly radio communications went dark less than two hours into the journey. Would they have reached the wreck in that time?

Bouledeneige · 21/06/2023 22:17

One very likely outcome is that they never find the Titan.

Perhaps it's his way of coping but he would be better off doing it privately. Regardless of his feelings towards Hamish, surely his behaviour is piling even more pain and distress on his mother?
