I think you know how contemptuous you are coming across, it's unpleasant.

Actually no, I think I'm being realistic.

If you've read my posts I have huge sympathy for the families involved.

I'm supportive of the rescue efforts.

I hope they are rescued.

The fact remains that these private ventures are to enable wealthy people to join an exclusive club for which they then have bragging rights.

There is NO scientific merit in human based exploration of the Titanic.

Have to agree with this. Sad situation indeed.

DreamTheMoors · 21/06/2023 21:43

Reports have said that they’re searching an area twice the size of Connecticut.
Connecticut is 70 miles wide and 110 miles long - a very small state.
My husband and I drove through it from south to north in a very short while.

It’s been since Sunday - I don’t have high hopes. However, I hope for their families and loved ones sakes that they’ll be okay.

It gets worse. I wish I hadn't opened the link on here to OceanGate's website. This is an extract from their FAQ:

(They call their paying punters a.k.a. the billionaires "Mission Specialists")

As a Mission Specialist, you will not just be ‘along for the ride’. During these authentic expeditions, you may opt-in to roles that you want to learn or that you already have an aptitude for – with training and coaching provided throughout your mission.
Role availability may vary depending on the expedition you join and the specific mission objectives. See the lists below for typical roles on each mission.

  • Communications and Tracking
Assist the pilot with sub-to-surface communications.
  • Submersible Service
Participate in servicing the submersible after dive operations.
  • Dive Planning
Assist in operational dive planning.

OMG given the risks involved (and the number of death mentions in their waivers), would you want some rich person who'd just had a bit of training on the boat that week helping with the sub to surface comms (no wonder it fails) or dive planning and servicing the sub afterwards?! 😯I know it's probably all sales BS but if I was paying 1/4 million dollars to risk my life, I wouldn't want some random other punter who'd maybe had a few hours training getting anywhere near this stuff!

Londre · 21/06/2023 21:45

Imo - this won’t be the end of expeditions underwater to Titanic.

Titan’s case will be used as “trial and error” (similar to plane crashes, they learn from accidents and what not to do) journey and maybe this will be the start of some regulation in the industry.

News stories involving rescue missions for missing people often capture the public's interest - remember the Chilean miners, the thai football team stuck in a cave, MH370. All were huge stories and none involved billionaires

Absolutely - I remember a story of a child being trapped in a well and the effort people went to save him.

I think there is something about people being trapped and the efforts people go to save them.

Remember Apollo 13 - and the interest and hope around the world in bringing them back home.

It must say something to the human psyche.

I think it's also that the idea of being trapped in a confined space thousands of metres under the sea knowing you're probably doomed to die there is literally many people's worst nightmare. Irrespective of how rich you are.

The more I read this story the more absurd it gets. The step son of the billionaire guy is tweeting stuff like this:

Jesus. When I saw the post earlier regarding him going to a Blink 182 concert during all this, I thought he was just a dumb kid. That’s a grown ass man. What utter disrespect!

tigger2022 · 21/06/2023 21:48

Yeah tbf their “source” could be that octopus that predicts world cup results so take it with a pinch of salt

Is that the one who went to a concert the other night?

The step son doesn't seem to have bonded with the step dad that well it seems.

I was thinking that almost the worst situation psychologically would be if it had surfaced and was bobbing there but wasn't found. To be able to see the light but not get out with it being bolted from the outside 😔

If he is rescued successfully it's going to be one awkward Christmas dinner...

tortoishelll · 21/06/2023 21:52

Can anybody else not seem to get the fact there are literally under 15 hours of potential oxygen on there, out of their heads? It's literally all consuming. I just feel so, so sick.

HundredMilesAnHour · 21/06/2023 21:52

ManuelBensonsLeftBoot · 21/06/2023 21:42

It could be a case of protecting top secret equipment. Not a matter of 'ours is better than yours' but a case of 'we don't want to reveal our technology that we have spent billions on developing in order to hopefully have the upper hand in the case of war on what is probably a fruitless task.'

So potentially the same mistake the Russians made with the Kursk that cost all those men their lives. I guess they're just seem as collateral damage.

Fucking hell! That's crazy.

Yeh, he doesn't really give a damn about his step dad. So crass. At least have respect for your mother losing her husband

Well yes pretty much, as much as I hope they are found safe and well (sadly seems doubtful) I don't think the military should have their tech and capabilites compromised for this.
