Daily Mail now reporting that banging has been heard in 30 minute intervals, I can't post a link but it is now at the top of the homepage as breaking news.

JeandeServiette · 21/06/2023 03:28

You didn't really just compare abuse victims to participants in adventurous activities did you @aurynne ?

I don't think many people begrudge the rescue effort in any case.

Humans take all manner of risks everyday. A decent society helps all of them when things go wrong. (Having not yet left an abusive relationship is absolutely NOT risk taking, though. Very bizarre of you to characterise it that way).

Wow. So they are.

So they're (potentially) not only alive but conscious, organised and being very disciplined.

That's got to be giving a surge of energy to the rescue effort.

Praying they’ll be found and brought up alive.

A little bit of hope. Fingers crossed we wake up to even more continuing hopeful news.

aurynne · 21/06/2023 03:57

People who take those risks are often addicted to such risks. No, I was not comparing abuse to taking risks for pleasure (although no doubt now some PPs will make it all about that and how terrible a person I am... the fact I actually work with victims of abuse regularly and I do understand in fact how the situation arises and how hard is to overcome does not matter...), I was explaining that different brains work in different ways, and that people who comment in disbelief why some people will do such unbelievably risky things have their own way to justify it, and keep taking newer and often more extreme risks, because it is part of being a human. Sometime we get involved in situations that pout us in extreme risk, for different reason. And we may need help from other humans.

But hey, keep insulting me if that makes you happy.

MostlyHuman · 21/06/2023 03:57

Ahhh headlines like this, how should you feel?! On one hand it's 'They're ALIVE maybe they can be RESCUED!' On the other it's 'They ARE alive, what if they CAN'T be rescued'😭

aurynne · 21/06/2023 04:03

OMFG I am not sure if I should be feeling hopeful by this news or simply horrified. The idea of 5 people trapped for hours banging on the sub wall is my worst nightmare.

TheTERFnextDoor · 21/06/2023 04:05

The Rolling Stones article said that the banging has since stopped. Sad

Yikesno · 21/06/2023 04:09

I guess banging must mean they're at the surface?

Sounds transmit very easily and very, very far in the ocean. They could be at the bottom. If they were at the surface, the plane that heard the sound should be able to locate them easily.

I know this is an off topic, probably weird comment; but thank you @milkyaqua !

It drives me loopy these days seeing people using "un/empathetic", really grinds my gears!! I'm bed bound and don't have much social life, so you've made my day. ✊

The P8 aircraft has apparently dropped sonar buoys, these detect sounds down to 13,000 feet. So even though banging may have been heard, it doesn't necessarily mean they're near the surface.

Ellie450 · 21/06/2023 04:16

Yes, no banging detected since yesterday.

More details from the 2018 lawsuit show that the front viewing portal was only rated for 1300m and that they did not intend to inform passengers of this. This is in addition to the other issues surrounding the Titan being rated for 3000m and then the company mysteriously changing that to 4000m at some point, even though that increase wouldn’t be possible without building and engineering a new submersible.

They also stated equipment "wasn't invented yet" for pressure testing the carbon fibre part of the sub, but this was untrue. Pressure testing has been standard with submarines and submersibles for many years, which is one the reasons the safety engineer blew the whistle in the first place.

Also, everyone seems to be asking why they didn't report this to the coastguard for 8 hours? Probably because the previous trip to this last yaar, they lost it for 5 hours! They were probably hoping they'd relocate it and not have to raise the alarm. Following that episode - which was witnessed by a journalist! - they said it would be updated with a safety beacon, but that's never happened.

aurynne · 21/06/2023 04:25

I tend to think that the participants in the exploration are all mature, intelligent and resourceful enough (perhaps bar the 19 year old) to have researched this issue much better than any of us (whom have only recently done some internet searches about the company), and would have had privileged access to a ton of info about the submarine itself and its safety features. I find it very hard to believe they just jumped into a suicide mission for the laughs.

Hamish Harding's friend books to do this with him and paid a deposit, before it was even built. He was so concerned with build quality and safety that he pulled out.

Hamish Harding's friend pulled out of sub trip over 'safety concerns'

Chris Brown, 61, had paid the deposit to go on the doomed voyage, but says he changed his mind after becoming concerned by the quality of technology and materials used in the vessel.

I have been following this story since it came out and how awful. I can’t imagine what they are thinking down there and the conditions they are starting to endure.

Kinsters · 21/06/2023 04:40

Hopefully they could have more air than stated. I'm not sure how it's calculated they have 96 hours but I do know that people breathe at vastly different rates. When you scuba dive you start with 200bars in your tank and after an hour there can be a big difference in how much air people have left ie my 200bars would last me maybe 1.75 hours, for a heavy breather it might only last an hour. Obviously those differences would be magnified over a greater time period.
