Do people CHOOSE when they poo?

TMI!!

Just read a thread about going at someone else’s house and how you should wait until your own place, that kind of thing.

Is it weird that I only go if I really need to go, like I’m kind of desperate? There’s no way I could wait and go at a particular place of time like wait until the event’s over. I either need to go or I don’t.

I can hold a wee for a bit but that’s completely different

I can usually wait a few hours, maybe longer.

Riverlee · 16/06/2023 20:29

Nope, not me. I need to go when I need to go. Sometimes I can wait, bUt not for any length of time.

Spidey66 · 16/06/2023 20:29

I don't choose. Well I do, I go in the nearest loo or in my pants. I have IBS.

Mushroo · 16/06/2023 20:30

I don’t really choose but I’m a shy pooper so I never get urge unless I’m at home. Even at home it generally follows a routine so normally the same time each day. But if I was out at that time I just wouldn’t need to go, it’s weird

Hummusanddipdip · 16/06/2023 20:31

I'm a bit like clockwork, so can kinda predict when I need to go, but when I need to, I need to.
Dh on the other hand, can just decide "I need a poo" and off he trots to the loo...

Yeah, this baffles me. I go when I need to. My house, someone else’s house, work, public toilet… it’s what they’re for 😂

flagpie · 16/06/2023 20:33

I don't actively choose it but I am very fortunate that once I have been out of bed for around half an hour I need to go. When I need to go I need to go though, I could never wait if I was out. I get cramping pains and the urge is strong. I have very occasionally been caught out in a public place but for the most part it's every moring at home. I could never stay at someone else's house and if I'm sharing a hotel room I will time my shower for straight after so the smell gets a chance to go!

MaxwellCat · 16/06/2023 20:36

Yes I wouldn’t poo in someone else’s house!

LaBefana · 16/06/2023 20:36

I have a friend who thinks it's really bad manners for visitors to do Number Two in her house. The smell, she says. I usually know an hour or two before that one is brewing, but if I am poorly or perhaps have had a hot curry, my bowels may say to my head 'get to a toilet RIGHT NOW!'.

Boofay · 16/06/2023 20:36

I have ibs. When that time comes I better find a toilet quickly or they'll be a turtle head poking out.

frogssnailandpuppydogtails · 16/06/2023 20:37

I do believe men choose when they poo .

Arewehumanorarewecupboards · 16/06/2023 20:37

They obviously don’t have IBS or badly managed intolerances.
I go whenever, wherever my body decides and don’t get much warning. It keeps my life interesting.

Namechangenoidea · 16/06/2023 20:38

Yes I would say I can choose.

Justputitdown · 16/06/2023 20:38

I agree 100% with OP. Like, obviously I'd prefer to go at home but when I need to go, I don't have an option of holding it in.

skilpadde · 16/06/2023 20:38

The urge to go is due to a signal from your inner sphincter. It's not healthy to repeatedly ignore that signal.

9outof10cats · 16/06/2023 20:38

Depends. A type 4-7 on the bristol stool chart, tends to be impatient and beyond my control. Type 1 to 3 are more stubborn and hence I have more say in the matter 😁.

headcheffer · 16/06/2023 20:40

I can't choose when to go, but I can choose not to go if that makes sense? I'll get the urge to go, but won't if I'm in a public loo or somewhere I don't want to like a new boyfriends house when I was younger! But then I can't just choose to go when I get home, I have to wait for the urge to go again and sometimes that isn't for a while!!

Outandup · 16/06/2023 20:41

I have previously had IBS and even now I can’t hold on for long before I get intense stomach/ab pain and wind.

Many parts of the world still don’t have access to toilets and running water and some would believe it’s disgusting and outrageous that a visitor would use their toilet for what Thomas Crapper intended it be used for 🤷‍♀️

LaDamaDeElche · 16/06/2023 20:41

No. When you need to go you feel the urge. How could you choose? Your body tells you when. You can hold it in, but not randomly sit down at a convenient time and do it.

Tadashi · 16/06/2023 20:42

I can hold it usually. Same with pee to a point! Depends what I've eaten or drank though. Huge bottle of water isn't going to be hold-able for long

vipersnest1 · 16/06/2023 20:42

I can choose and do. I don't get 'urge' very often as I have a rectocele. Even when I know I need 'to go' I don't unless I'm at home, due to the rectocele and what it entails.
I'm not a weird troll, just living with something that impacts me and my mental health, and waiting on the NHS recognising how horrible it is for me.

Newnamenewname109870 · 16/06/2023 20:42

MaxwellCat · 16/06/2023 20:36

Yes I wouldn’t poo in someone else’s house!

But how can you stop it if it comes on?

OP posts:
waterlego · 16/06/2023 20:43

I do very much choose but I don’t think it’s a good thing to do that (not for me anyway). If I’m in the middle of doing something I’ll put it off. I also don’t go anywhere other than my own house unless absolutely unavoidable. As a result the ‘urge’ a PP mentioned now doesn’t work very well so constipation is now a part of my life.
