Do people CHOOSE when they poo?

TMI!!

Just read a thread about going at someone else’s house and how you should wait until your own place, that kind of thing.

Is it weird that I only go if I really need to go, like I’m kind of desperate? There’s no way I could wait and go at a particular place of time like wait until the event’s over. I either need to go or I don’t.

I can choose to a certain extent. Usually I have a feeling that I could 'drop off a job lot' sometime in the next 2-4 hours. If it seems most convenient, like I'm going on a journey, I'll sit on the throne and make it happen. If I'm early in that 2-4 hour period, it might need a bit of effort, but out it comes. If it's quite a bit later, not so much. I don't think of this as 'holding it in'.

this is me.

I know typically I need a poo in the morning. If I’m not going out I’ll hang around waiting for that time, but if I’m going to work or whatever then I’ll make my poo happen.

If I’ve gone out and start to kinda need, and I know I’m going to be home within a few hours, I can wait.

If I felt I couldn’t wait, I’d do it in the nearest toilet, but that rarely happens.

My poops are good. Not too large, not to small. Not hard, not runny.

GreenWhiteViolet · 16/06/2023 21:16

Aside from the rare occasion that I'm actually ill, I only ever poo at home or in a hotel room if I'm there alone. I don't feel the urge and ignore it if I'm out, I just don't feel it at all.

When younger I once went camping for a week. No urges at all, no ill effects from not going - and then literally ten minutes after I got through my front door I had horrendous cramps and had to run for the toilet!

Changeling78 · 16/06/2023 21:21

Yeah, as long as it’s a normal pooh and not a stomach cramping type, I can hold it for up to 5-6 hours. My OH has to go as soon as he gets an alert.

I generally find, if I have to go out early, and want a poop early on, that a stiff black two-teaspoons Nescafé gets the chocolate factory going within about 10 minutes. My husband says the smell of the books in a public library makes him want a 'summit meeting with Gordon Brown' and he has been known to go in one just for that reason.

catsmother · 16/06/2023 21:22

Another IBS sufferer here - it would be a dream come true if I could choose when to go and/or be 'regular'. You can't underestimate the stress of trying to organise your life being mindful of IBS and worse, the sheer panic and pain when you need to go and can't access a loo.

EmeraldFox · 16/06/2023 21:22

I go at roughly the same time each day. Sometimes a difference in my mealtime routine can disrupt that. I have a couple of hours where I can either go straight away or delay.

Emmamoo89 · 16/06/2023 21:23

I'm fine with pooing in other people's houses/work. When i need to go I need to go

waterlego · 16/06/2023 21:24

One of my friend!’s son’s who has ASD if he ever went away to somewhere unfamiliar eg not his home, he could choose not to do a pooh and if necessary do this for an entire week.

I don’t have ASD as far as I know but I’m a bit like this. I don’t think I’ve ever gone a full week but it’s completely normal for me on holiday not to go until about day 5. It’s become a family joke 🙄 It’s not good though because it can make me feel bloated and sluggish which is not great on holiday! It’s not that I’m ‘holding it in’, it’s just that the ‘urge’ will not kick in! I think I have (unintentionally) trained my bowel that way. (It’s definitely psychological and probably relates to a difficult episode in my childhood).

I do normally have a coffee as soon as I wake up if I’m going out, whereas if I’m staying in I’ll have a more leisurely cup.

I feel an experiment coming on.

waterlego · 16/06/2023 21:26

As for those saying they’ll go and sit on the throne and have a try- I don’t dare do that as I have a small prolapse and any pushing or straining could make it worse 😫

BorisJohnsonsMissingComb · 16/06/2023 21:27

Anyone who has any kind of bowel or bladder issues knows that for many people there is no choice. When you have to go you have to go. I get terrible flare ups and once the churning starts I literally have minutes (if that) to try and find somewhere. It's an incredibly debilitating condition.

lljkk · 16/06/2023 21:29

I don't have IBS. I can't hold out long after the need arises.
From what I can discern, being constipated would be much worse than being how I am.

Sorry this is indelicate. I eat a lot of fruit & veg (high fibre) and get a lot of exercise. Things might be slower to move along if i lived on low fibre and didn't move hardly at all. And if I never had caffeine. Any caffeine moves things along, too.

BettyOBarley · 16/06/2023 21:30

DH holds it all day sometimes at work until he gets home!
(He works on the road). I don't know how he can. I mean I can hold it a while, not all day though!

lljkk · 16/06/2023 21:30

I confess to be slightly fascinated by the MNers who say they can wait a week or longer, or certainly many hours if not somehow convenient. I sort of presume they take little exercise, consume little caffeine & eat little fibre.

Busybutbored · 16/06/2023 21:31

I would try and hold it. I only go somewhere else if I really have to

This is also me! I hate it. I have to plan a morning where I have loads of coffee and make it clear I need to be left alone in the room to er, do my business

Yep this. It completely rules my life and has done since I was 19, I’m now 42 and had every single test, medication and food intolerance diary thing known to man and still it continues. It is completely debilitating.

violinviolet · 16/06/2023 21:32

I wish I did but no it's at random times

I have a couple of hours if not convenient but pretty much the opposite of your final sentence is true for me. At least three black coffees a day, regular exercise and a lot of fruit and veg, often three serves at breakfast.

I am one such MNer. I eat lots of veg, especially leafy greens but not much fruit as I’m not keen on it. I exercise at least 12 hours a week. I don’t drink coffee as I don’t like it but drink loads of tea and a fair bit of Diet Coke. In my case it’s psychological. I’ve- unfortunately- ‘trained’ myself not to go.

PriamFarrl · 16/06/2023 21:40

I need to go first thing in the morning, and that one won’t wait. But if I’ve slept somewhere then I feel ok having a poo there.

I knew someone who would only poo at home and this caused him quite serious problems as he was at boarding school!

TempyBrennan · 16/06/2023 21:40

Spidey66 · 16/06/2023 20:29

I don't choose. Well I do, I go in the nearest loo or in my pants. I have IBS.

Also me…
i know i’ll go every morning and every night but the in between is totally unknown in urgency/location 😭
