Do people CHOOSE when they poo?

TMI!!

Just read a thread about going at someone else’s house and how you should wait until your own place, that kind of thing.

Is it weird that I only go if I really need to go, like I’m kind of desperate? There’s no way I could wait and go at a particular place of time like wait until the event’s over. I either need to go or I don’t.

I couldn’t go for a poo if I didn’t need one, but I can comfortably hold it all day (and longer if I have to, but that gives me a stomach ache).

Timeturnerplease · 16/06/2023 21:45

I used to have terrible IBS, though it seems to have calmed down since I had children. Before that if I needed to go, even in the middle of a lesson (teacher) I needed to go then and there.

As a teenager I used to get poo anxiety before family trips, yet strangely a skiing holiday would always set me up to be completely regular, once a day immediately after breakfast and no urgency the rest of the day.

I’ve never worked out why this happened, but it worked every single ski trip. I hope the hotel weren’t offended by my daily unloading in their loos.

I think what this thread shows is that everyone's different and also that we don't talk about this process enough!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 16/06/2023 21:46

I go about 20 minutes after taking my thyroxine in the morning.

I confess to be slightly fascinated by the MNers who say they can wait a week or longer, or certainly many hours if not somehow convenient. I sort of presume they take little exercise, consume little caffeine & eat little fibre.

Nothing like the topic of people's bowels to bring out the judgy folk.

Jewnicorn · 16/06/2023 21:49

Once upon a time I was really self conscious about it and absolutely would not go anywhere except my own toilet, at home. This included not going when I went camping or on holiday for a week. I got the urge plenty but just kind of refused until it went away (super healthy I know).

Then I got poorly in my early twenties and was eventually diagnosed with Crohns. I had to do a lot of unlearning bad habits and trying to deal with my own shyness/insecurity about it otherwise I’d have just never been able to leave my house again. I still try to avoid doing it anywhere but home however often don’t have a choice so try not to get too hung up about it.

My husband will go anywhere and can’t see my issue with it. In fact sometimes I think he goes just for something to do.

Airdustmoon · 16/06/2023 21:50

Mostly only poo at home, I would never go in a public toilet or at a friend’s house. I can occasionally go at work, but only if I absolutely have to. Mostly if the urge comes on when I’m in an inconvenient place, I just ignore it and it passes. Like many others travel and holidays affect me and it’s not unusual for me not to go until day 4 or so of a holiday!

truthhurts23 · 16/06/2023 21:50

when you need to go you need to go i guess..
when i got my new toilet installed the guy christened it before he left 😖 guess he couldnt hold it

flagpie · 16/06/2023 20:33

I don't actively choose it but I am very fortunate that once I have been out of bed for around half an hour I need to go. When I need to go I need to go though, I could never wait if I was out. I get cramping pains and the urge is strong. I have very occasionally been caught out in a public place but for the most part it's every moring at home. I could never stay at someone else's house and if I'm sharing a hotel room I will time my shower for straight after so the smell gets a chance to go!

This is exactly me

User12376598 · 16/06/2023 21:54

I can hold on quite a while which always amazes DH who when he has to go, has to go, fortunately for him he's not bothered where he goes, public toilets, peoples houses, work, whereas the mere thought of having to go somewhere I don't want to will send it retreating, I very rarely go outside the house

Beseen22 · 16/06/2023 21:55

I never feel the urge when not in my home. I get a lot of warning, sometimes I will just think oh I haven't moved my bowels in a few days and then kind of keep it in my mind to try and do something about it. I have never done it outside the house. One of my kids is very similar and the other poops everytime he's near a toilet.

Trust me it's not a flex, if I'm on 4 x nightshifts in a row I won't go for the full time even when at home sleeping in between. I've gone a full week on holiday without any urge to go. Sometimes I'm desperate for my period to give me a good clear out.

I think what this thread shows is that everyone's different and also that we don't talk about this process enough!

Unfortunately whenever people try to sensibly discuss this sort of stuff on MN they immediately get called a 'poo troll'. I always find it bizarre and quite immature. I think there are probably far more people who suffer from IBS/other bowel conditions and find it hard to talk about them in RL than there are these mysterious poo trolls.

NineOfNine · 16/06/2023 21:56

Not really?

I tend to get a sort of “warning” sensation that lets me know I’ll be needing a poo in the near future, generally the next 30-60 minutes, so I’m aware that I’ll need to make sure I’m near a toilet - but I don’t regard that as “holding it in”, because if I try to make myself go when I’m feeling like that, nothing happens.
Once I do get the needing to go urge, I need to go.

So, in the scenario in the OP, I’d generally have time to get home from a friends house if I jumped in the car immediately when I felt the warning signals, but I wouldn’t be able to just hold it in indefinitely for convenience.

ecdysiast2 · 16/06/2023 21:57

Does it sometimes depend on how much you eat? And with alcohol too?
I usually go once, often more or less as soon as I wake up, per day. But my partner who (at the weekend) drinks a lot of beer seems to never be off the loo some days!

Nothing like MN to bring them out 😂

I exercise every day, love a coffee and I'm veggie. However I can usually wait to go if inconvenient. Not sure about a week or longer though!

WunWun · 16/06/2023 21:58

I would only go at someone's house if I was staying with them for a few days. I generally wouldn't get the urge to go at someone's house, but if I did I could probably hold it for a day if I had to.

I would be the same if someone was staying at my house

SaxSick · 16/06/2023 21:58

I have a friend who doesn't like pooing away from home. We were in Jamaica and she didn't poo for a week and she is vegetarian.

hattyhathat · 16/06/2023 22:00

Some people hold it in and its really obvious coz they smell like a fart

User12376598 · 16/06/2023 22:00

Some peoples bowels just work slower, mine do whatever I eat so the likelihood of being took short is much less than someone who goes more often, if DH doesn't go every day it is very unusual whereas I often go 3 or 4 days

Juiceboxxy · 16/06/2023 22:01

MaxwellCat · 16/06/2023 20:36

Yes I wouldn’t poo in someone else’s house!

Lucky you.
For me, it's either their toilet or carpet.
My bowels are so miserable, I have multiple intolerances/IBS. I get hot sweats, cramps and I can't hold it for more than a few minutes.
Makes me sad others would judge me for using their toilet.

CrunchyCarrot · 16/06/2023 22:02

I have never been able to 'choose' to go, if I did it I could have avoided those many bouts of constipation! I clearly had issues with elimination as a young child and that has caused problems later on.

I don't think I have ever had to go in someone's house, I have rarely gone away from home. I simply don't get the urge. I need to feel in a secure and clean environment and not be disturbed, so psychologically that's difficult if away from home, unless it's a very familiar place. I can suppress the urge (see childhood issues!) but I try to avoid doing that.

hattyhathat · 16/06/2023 22:00

😵‍💫 What on earth? Why would they?

People fart as they're about to poo. No one could hold it in if it was that imminent!

Voyager54 · 16/06/2023 22:03

I hate using any Public loos for a variety of reasons and I admire those on you tube who do not have toilets in their campervans it is simply not for me.

However having been married fore some years we seem to have use loos facilities at the same time hence we have 2 loos.

As they say people who live together pee together!!

GG1986 · 16/06/2023 22:03

No way!! I have ibs and have about 5 minutes to find a toilet before I shit myself at times!!
