Do people CHOOSE when they poo?

TMI!!

Just read a thread about going at someone else’s house and how you should wait until your own place, that kind of thing.

Is it weird that I only go if I really need to go, like I’m kind of desperate? There’s no way I could wait and go at a particular place of time like wait until the event’s over. I either need to go or I don’t.

Hell no, if I need to go then I need to go! I have IBS though and the one time I didn’t have a poo all day I was seriously worried!

LakeTiticaca · 16/06/2023 20:46

IT all depends on whether or not you're touching cloth 😅😅

No. When you need to go you feel the urge. How could you choose? Your body tells you when. You can hold it in, but not randomly sit down at a convenient time and do it.

I can choose to a certain extent. Usually I have a feeling that I could 'drop off a job lot' sometime in the next 2-4 hours. If it seems most convenient, like I'm going on a journey, I'll sit on the throne and make it happen. If I'm early in that 2-4 hour period, it might need a bit of effort, but out it comes. If it's quite a bit later, not so much. I don't think of this as 'holding it in'.

But how can you stop it if it comes on?

I can hold it? I don’t poo in public toilets either.

musixa · 16/06/2023 20:46

In the sense of being able to defer/force the issue within limited parameters, yes, I can as long as I'm not having an IBS attack.

gogohmm · 16/06/2023 20:47

I can choose eg go before going out if I haven't been that day. I can also wait within reason but generally I won't feel the need to go when I'm out

But surely you have to have the signal from your body? Well I do anyway, maybe I’m not normal 😂

Theoldgreygoose · 16/06/2023 20:49

I generally go at the same time, but not always, and when I need to go I need to go! I couldn't care less if anyone poos at my house, it's a complete non-issue.

I can't choose when to go, but I can choose not to go if that makes sense? I'll get the urge to go, but won't if I'm in a public loo or somewhere I don't want to like a new boyfriends house when I was younger! But then I can't just choose to go when I get home, I have to wait for the urge to go again and sometimes that isn't for a while!!

Yes this is exactly it for me too. Can't decide when I'll need one, but if it's not convenient when I do, I'll just 'hold on' to it! The feeling sort of passes and comes back (often much) later

Ollybob · 16/06/2023 20:53

I can delay it and depending on what I've eaten beforehand I can hold for 20 minutes or several hours if it's not convenient.

troubg · 16/06/2023 20:56

I have very rarely done a pooh at work or outside the home (bar trips/holidays). I tend to only need to go first thing or evening & I just don't get the urge when i'm not at home.

Sunshineandflipflops · 16/06/2023 21:00

Bloody hell…everyone poos! If I need to go, I find the nearest toilet and go. I mean, that’s literally what they are for!

if I try and hold it I feel uncomfortable and generally quite windy, which I think can be worse for those around you than just going and doing what everyone does pretty much every day!

I don’t tend to go until I’m really ready though so really doesn’t take any longer than a wee!

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 16/06/2023 21:00

I can sort of choose to hold it in but I don’t think it’s healthy to do this.

One of my friend!’s son’s who has ASD if he ever went away to somewhere unfamiliar eg not his home, he could choose not to do a pooh and if necessary do this for an entire week.

ASGIRC · 16/06/2023 21:02

If Ive had a certain amount of alcohol the day before, i know I will need the toilet, fairly urgently, after eating lunch. In those instances, no, i dont choose. it chooses me!
Sometimes I also get the urge after dinner, but often I can distract myself, and delay. The urge will disappear, and usually it will only come back the next day (and the stool will be a lot healthier on the bristol chart, cause moisture was absorbed during the night)

Ideally, id only go at home... But realistically, thats not possible.

I have managed to avoid going at my new job, as it only has cubicles, and not stand alone toilets.

At last! Someone else who spells 'pooh' properly. Thank you!

Hahaha I wish

I have IBD and have zero control over it all

justme2022 · 16/06/2023 21:06

I couldn't go in someone else's house if I wanted to.

GloomySkies · 16/06/2023 21:07

4th degree tear evicting dc1. When I need, I need.

Phos · 16/06/2023 21:07

I don't choose as such, like I can't just decide "Oh I fancy doing a poo" and be able to produce one at will. However if I find myself needing to go I can usually hold it in for a bit (but obviously I'd rather not)

Oblomov23 · 16/06/2023 21:07

I can pooh easily and am done in minutes. I'm not ashamed, go anywhere anytime, done, easy.

ToContiOrSequi · 16/06/2023 21:10

When I've got to go, then that's it, I don't get a choice to hold it in. I'm in awe of those that can - it would make life a lot easier. If I'm going on a journey I have to take Imodium- nothing worse than being stuck on train/in car with no loo. In fact that experience is how my anxiety manifest itself, so no loo access is a huge issue for me. I haven't been on holiday in ten years because of it. And of course anxiety makes you need to go urgently even more!

So yeah, pretty envious of those that can hold it with no discomfort/pain.

This for me too. Occasionally it's too urgent and I can't wait, that happens more now after a 4th degree tear so I always try to find somewhere when I feel the urge unless I'm out hiking or similar. Thankfully haven't been caught out when out and about!

Lemonfizzy · 16/06/2023 21:11

If I have to hold it for some reason, I can usually. (But it's quite uncomfortable to do so). I'll always go if I can, I wouldn't actively choose to hold it!

Although if I'm out, or at someone else's house, or at work, I rarely get the urge to be honest. I think that's psychological - I need to feel comfortable and at home to poo.

Tessisme · 16/06/2023 21:11

My mum told me when I was small, that if you want to poo at the same time every day, you should sit on the toilet and go through the - ahem - motions (bit of pushing with the old rectal muscles etc), that your body would learn that it was supposed to go at that time. Never tried it because I'm pretty regular anyway. I don't think I've ever needed to go in anyone's house unless I'm staying with them, as I always go when I get up. But I can definitely hold it in if I have to.

My 10yo DS has recently been diagnosed with IBD (Crohn's.) Bowel movements are now a hot topic in our house😆 When he's gotta go, he's gotta go! It has been an education. You have my sympathy.
