Do people CHOOSE when they poo?

TMI!!

Just read a thread about going at someone else’s house and how you should wait until your own place, that kind of thing.

Is it weird that I only go if I really need to go, like I’m kind of desperate? There’s no way I could wait and go at a particular place of time like wait until the event’s over. I either need to go or I don’t.

I can hold for a long time, wouldn't poo at someone's house, my body won't let me. It's not healthy at all but I'm too old for this to change!

User12376598 · 16/06/2023 22:07

Going on holiday does affect me and makes me want to go less but I don't think it's because of the toilet as I'm usually happy with that as it's in the apartment, I always thought it was the change of water causing a bit of constipation

Mostly only poo at home, I would never go in a public toilet or at a friend’s house. I can occasionally go at work, but only if I absolutely have to. Mostly if the urge comes on when I’m in an inconvenient place, I just ignore it and it passes. Like many others travel and holidays affect me and it’s not unusual for me not to go until day 4 or so of a holiday!

That really doesn't sound healthy to me. Loos are for using surely, why pick and choose which ones you use? I eat a normal amount of fruit and veg, and drink lots of water, I simply couldn't hold on for several days, and wouldn't want to.

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 16/06/2023 22:08

I've read it all now. If I need to poo I'll poo. Whether it's home, in laws, a friends, work or a public toilet. It's not healthy to hold it in

Cas112 · 16/06/2023 22:08

Apparently a lot of people can but I literally have to go within 10mins of needing a poo

SimonsCow · 16/06/2023 22:09

Hmm… I don’t ever suddenly need to poo. Sometimes mornings I know that I’ll need to go in the next couple of hours so I make sure I go before the school run because that’s an hour with no access to a toilet

caggie3 · 16/06/2023 22:09

I always needed to go at the same time everyday, early evening and for the past two months it's 11pm and I want to move it earlier again and I don't know how 😂 body clocks are weird.

😵‍💫 What on earth? Why would they?

People fart as they're about to poo. No one could hold it in if it was that imminent!

They do! It gets really stinky and then it's like..can they not just go poo already.

Kanaloa · 16/06/2023 22:10

I think most people can choose to an extent. Most healthy adults anyway! Of course I can’t choose exactly when I want to go, but I can recognise that I need to go and still not shit myself when necessary. If you can’t hold it at all, do you struggle with long journeys? I mean what do you do if you’re on the motorway and aren’t close to any stops?

To me there's a difference between putting it off and holding it in when you need to go so badly it's 'nearly peeping out' as my daughter said when she was 9.

WunWun · 16/06/2023 22:10

I literally can't imagine going to someone's house for a party or whatever and shitting in their toilet! It wouldn't cross my mind to do it unless it was an absolute emergency because I had diarrhea.

Hollyppp · 16/06/2023 22:11

I normally know about 20 mins before but sometimes only 5 mins before. I always go at the nearest toilet even in someone else’s house!!!!!!
yes

really don’t know how others do that holding it in thing, my body doesn’t work that way

Kanaloa · 16/06/2023 22:12

What I mean is, most people can wait a normal amount of time. For example, if you work in a job where you can’t go at any instant, if you’re driving, if you’re on a walk. I would think most healthy adults are able to do that and it’s not normal to feel you will shit your pants if you don’t go the very instant you feel you need to.

ButterfliesandMoths · 16/06/2023 22:13

Mushroo · 16/06/2023 20:30

I don’t really choose but I’m a shy pooper so I never get urge unless I’m at home. Even at home it generally follows a routine so normally the same time each day. But if I was out at that time I just wouldn’t need to go, it’s weird

I'm exactly the same as this

MerryHen · 16/06/2023 22:13

I get the urge and when I do it is quite urgent!

I tend to only get an urge to poo at home though when I feel relaxed and unobserved.

If I have to hold it I can but it's very uncomfortable and I will go as soon as I am able to, usually this means waiting for another urge but once I need to go those urges come thick and fast. If I happen to be at someone else's house or in public I'd go, it'd be too uncomfortable to hold it in.

For me, eating a bowl of warm porridge is a sure fire way to bring on a bowel movement within half an hour or so. So I guess in that sense I could 'choose' when to have a poo 💩

Ukrainebaby23 · 16/06/2023 22:14

I don't use the toilet on buses or trains, or planes unless I'm absolutely desperate. Bowels are funny things, at home if I get the call, I have to go pretty much straight away but if I'm at work or out or on a plane/bus/train then I can wait, though it may get uncomfortable and I may have accompanied gas. Sorry TMI.

WiddlinDiddlin · 16/06/2023 22:15

I have a delightfully intermittent bowel..

Sometimes - 1 per day, plenty of leeway as to when, so today I've been at work 2 til 10 so its at the top of my to do list now...

Typically though those days are where I have to work pretty hard to produce it, my guts not all that keen on shoving stuff out even when it really is over-baked, so utilising the 'choose your appointment' system there isn't the smartest thing (or at least, abusing it isn't).

Sometimes - no real warning, maybe a hot fart and poo-belly a few minutes before and I need to really get a shift on or things are going wrong south of the border.

Occasionally (sugar free sweets. you bastards) - zero warning, all of the spasmodic ability to involuntarily eject stuff is here and functioning on overdrive.

I tend to avoid doing it out of the house if possible, but can if I must. I can't ever plan and rely on not needing to go and being able to choose when.

AnxiouslyWait · 16/06/2023 22:16

I can wait a whole day from when I get the urge. I typically only go twice a week though

Gilead · 16/06/2023 22:19

I used to go about 25 times a day. Absolutely no control and the smell was unbelievably unpleasant. I have a stoma now. Much easier in many ways.

museumum · 16/06/2023 22:19

I can always hold (illness excepted) but if I do hold I can get constipated. I only hold if there’s no toilet or trains or planes. Because if I hold there’s a chance I will become a bit bloated and uncomfortable yet unable to go later in the day.

Badbudgeter · 16/06/2023 22:20

I can ignore the poo urge and it goes away. I don’t normally need to as I’m very regular. Early morning dog walk, cup of coffee, followed by a trip to the loo. If I need a wee though I’d have to pop to the toilet.

Strange question but have you ever had a colonoscopy?

My bowel is exactly like that & I have Diverticulitis.

Charlize43 · 16/06/2023 22:24

I have IBS. I have to carry and take Imodium with me everywhere, except when at home when I can rush back and forth to the toilet freely. As someone who was a gourmand and loves food and interesting recipes, I now weep at all the things I can't eat.

My whole life revolves around my digestive system including nights where I have eaten the wrong thing and have been up until 5.00am rushing to the toilet at intervals.

BillieShears · 16/06/2023 22:24

I can hold it for a little while, depending on the circumstances. I work in a hospital and wouldn't deliberately poo in our department staff toilets but wander off elsewhere. I sometimes get a surprise poo when I wee though.

I was more surprised on that thread that OP thought 3 minutes on the bog was a short trip. I think I've only ever stayed on for that long if I've had a tummy bug or a horrific hangover

I have a friend who thinks it's really bad manners for visitors to do Number Two in her house. The smell, she says. I usually know an hour or two before that one is brewing, but if I am poorly or perhaps have had a hot curry, my bowels may say to my head 'get to a toilet RIGHT NOW!'.

It is unless they have a medical condition.
