I especially like the Zac Goldsmith one since he is the person who pushed for recall petitions for wayward MPs.

Imagine voting for a party who doesn't know what the truth is, and tells you they know what a woman is. Takes a special kind of stupid, doesn't it ?

Cornettoninja · 17/06/2023 14:04

Oh they know what truth is @SerendipityJane they just believe it’s their right to dictate what that is.

BunnyBettChetwynnd · 17/06/2023 14:22

I'd forgotten that. At the time it seemed to hang in the air and now, here we are.

The truth is you can't get any odds on the Tories losing the next election right now. Unless you are willing to gamble it will be by less than 50 seats. And with a weight of history that tells us no party has ever come from so far behind to win, I'd save my money for the mortgage rate increases yet to come.

In a way (although it's a frankly shocking waste of irony) the Tory party has become the paradigm of everything Brexiteers hated about the EU. Sclerotic. Corrupt. Incompetent. Seeking to expand it's powers. Absolutely no interest in the average Briton. Obsessed with immigration. And run by a bunch of effectively unelected officials.

It is a timely reminder why totalitarian regimes fear, loathe and actively destroy intelligence and learning. Probably part of Boris tantrum now is the fact that a lot of people have seen him bested by someone as beige as Starmer.

Why do you think ministers are 'unelected'? Don't you understand how MPs are voted for and therefore end up in the HOC?

No idea why you think they are not interested in the average Briton, for starters have you seen how many cost of living payments have been dished out and that is without all the billions in support furlough etc in the pandemic. 'Obsessed by immigration'. Hmm, do you mean they are keen to stop criminal gangs exploiting vulnerable people in treacherous crossings in dinghies? How very obsessed of them.

Why don't you care about the criminal gang led by Boris Johnson that stopped children having birthday parties while they partied on @Janiie

@Janiie there is a subtle difference between Sue Gray and Boris Johnson in this particular case, it so subtle that I am worried that even after I explain it you may not understand.

Sue Gray went through the proper process when she got a new job.
Boris Johnson did not go through the proper process when he got a new job.

In fact (another puerile thought) with a little bit of more subtle Google-gaming than model buses, there would be a lot of mileage in starting to refer to "Brexit" as "BoRis' EXIT". The only reason I would strongly advise anyone who had the skills to do that not to, is because I think Boris has suffered enough and it would be deeply unfair to all the decent men and/or/if women that have worked so hard to make him the person he is today.

How are they stopping criminal gangs by putting their victims (including sex trafficked women) on prison barges before attempting to deport them?

pointythings · 17/06/2023 15:08

@Janiie the way to stop the criminal gangs is to fund the asylum system properly and establish safe routes so that people can apply from outside the UK.

But you don't want to know that.

Its a start to stop the boats, no? Or do you want tragedies with people drowning?

Before I lend any support to the Illegal Migration Bill I'd like to see how much it cost and some evidence that it will reduce numbers to the extent the Conservatives have said it will.

But you can't supply that because neither impact nor costs assessments have been released.

Funny that.

By all accounts some refugees pay a lot of money to put their lives at risk. I feel this lot are missing a trick not implementing safe, proper routes at a similar cost to what the trafficking gangs charge.

That doesn’t really solve the proportion who are trafficked against their will and costs are worked off post-trafficking but then neither does anything the tories have proposed. They’ve clearly latched onto a reason that makes them sound human but transparently don’t give two shits about anyone dying hence them being so proud of themselves for thinking up blocking rights to present as trafficked if entering illegally.

No, it isn't a start.

  • If the government were putting investment into staffing to deal with the backlog of asylum applications;
  • If the government were legislating for safe asylum routes from outside the UK;
  • If the government were meeting their commitments under international law;
Then I might believe they're just trying to make a start. But they are doing none of those things. They're just yelling 'stop the boats' and doing fuck all. And people like you applaud.

The answer to both of those questions is no. And you know it, you just can’t resist a bit of emotional blackmail to shut people up can you?
