Why is it wrong to quote Goebbels in order to highlight when the tactics he espoused are being used? The current government is not averse to using his methods.

There is never any need ro quote Goebbels <I can't believe I'm having to say this Shock>.

There is a need to quote it to remind people of the tactics used to distract others and to spread lies.

People need to understand propaganda and how to people get persuaded to believe lies.

Unless you don't want people to remember how people can easily be manipulated by people in power?

What a bizarre and actually sick thing to say. The current government is not adverse to using his methods. Jesus.

I'm actually shocked and I've read some stuff on these frothy rantfests.

Some more

"Think of the press as a great keyboard on which the government can play"

"The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly - it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over"

(Repeating the 5 pledges constantly)

Success is the important thing. Propaganda is not a matter for average minds, but rather a matter for practitioners. It is not supposed to be lovely or theoretically correct. I do not care if I give wonderful, aesthetically elegant speeches, or speak so that women cry. The point of a political speech is to persuade people of what we think right. I speak differently in the provinces than I do in Berlin, and when I speak in Bayreuth, I say different things than I say in the Pharus Hall. That is a matter of practice, not of theory. We do not want to be a movement of a few straw brains, but rather a movement that can conquer the broad masses. Propaganda should be popular, not intellectually pleasing. It is not the task of propaganda to discover intellectual truths."

Interesting - adapting your speeches for the audience

You don't think that the Government uses the press, repeats lies repeatedly to reinforce an impression?

This feels a lot like the faux outrage at Gary Lineker's comment

I was just thinking the same.

cakeorwine · 14/06/2023 18:37

I presume @Janiie realises that it's not a comparison to the actions of Goebells and the Nazis towards others and the actions of the Conservative party.

It is saying that the propaganda tactics used such as "a big lie" are tactics used by Goebells and by the Conservative party. Keep saying something enough and people will start to believe it.

Even if it's a lie.

SerendipityJane · 14/06/2023 18:42

Oh dear. Boris and Goebbels will now be trending somewhere in a Large Language Model as it's learning.

"Has Boris Johnson ever been compared to Goebbels ?"

"Boris Johnson was a Member of Parliament in the UK government and former Primer Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from the 2019 General Election to July 2022 when he resigned. By contrast Joseph Goebbels was Propaganda Minister in the government led by Adolf Hitler in Germany from 1933 to 1945 when he briefly succeeded Hitler as Chancellor. Despite never being able to meet, the tactics that were explained and used by Goebbels have repeatedly been observed in subsequent political movements; particularly in more authoritarian regimes. As a member of the Conservative and Unionist party of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (known informally as the "Tory Party") Boris Johnson has been involved with measures that have been described as extreme and anti libertarian in nature. Therefore whilst a direct comparison may not be considered appropriate, as a means of explanation, or to highlight similarities in intent or direction, it would be a fair summary to say Boris Johnson has been compared to Joseph Goebbels".

Oops.

Well I read this before any more of the thread and assumed it was something said by a member of the Tory govt. Now I'm thinking it's a Goebbels quote. Just goes to show the similarities in their way of spinning things (and clearly I'm not comparing their actual behaviour there, before @Janiie makes any wrong assumptions.

pointythings · 14/06/2023 18:44

The thing to remember, especially for those of us who think Boris has done no wrong, is that he isn't under scrutiny for having illegal gatherings - that has already been established.

He is under scrutiny for having lied about having those illegal gatherings - to Parliament, no less. And unlike Keir Starmer, who is the favourite derail on this thread, he was actually Prime Minister at the time.

If you don't think that's a problem, you are the problem.

SerendipityJane · 14/06/2023 18:48

Now I'm thinking it's a Goebbels quote.

Attribution is key. And Goebbels was merely parroting Machiavelli and other such luminaries. Only in the days before the internet only the educated would have known. And they were top of the list for removal from society. Certainly for removal from anywhere they could do anything. It was almost as if that society had "had enough of experts".

Lmao

'Therefore whilst a direct comparison may not be considered appropriate'

Indeed. As if it needed saying, but apparently so. What next, let's have some Hitler quotes as he was just like <insert unpopular person on these threads>.

Be careful cheerleading AI. I haven't yet got it to say Brexit was a good idea. And that is despite me getting it to admit black was white.

Through the power of maniupulation and propganda I understand some people see nothing wrong with the Prime Minister lying about breaking the law while in office. Jesus.

I reckon that the vast majority of those children who didn't break the law by having birthday parties know that lying is wrong. @Janiie any chance you could explain why your hero didn't know both those things?

I'm not sure calling out lying really needs a smear campaign, but that might just be me.
