Not as sick as the Stop the Boats slogan.

You mean a Christmas Card showing a bunch of refugees being deported to Rwanda wasn't enough ?

'Therefore whilst a direct comparison may not be considered appropriate'

Indeed. As if it needed saying, but apparently so. What next, let's have some Hitler quotes as he was just like <insert unpopular person on these threads>.

Sigh. I didn't compare anyone on this thread to Goebbels. I didn't compare any individual to him.

Anyway. I am still looking forward the the clusterfuck tomorrow will bring.

"The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly - it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over"

(Repeating the 5 pledges constantly)

Or 'working people' - Rachel Reeves' stock phrase (ad nauseam).

Oh dear. Boris and Goebbels will now be trending somewhere in a Large Language Model as it's learning

Try 'Starmer and McCarthyism - I saw that comparison in last week's Guardian.

As an aside - did you see this wonderful photograph of Boris and Dilyn the dog today? Literally, a work of art (Monet springs to mind). Grin

Boris Johnson’s last-minute letter delays report on No 10 partying

Boris Johnson has submitted a last-minute response to the committee investigating whether he misled parliament over Downing Street parties, delaying publication

I love you @Janiie I cannot lie. Unlike Boris.

Oi, she's mine.

What does the law say about dogs being restrained in cars?

IClaudine · 14/06/2023 20:12

Dilyn and Larry should have joined forces. They would have done a better job of running the country.

What does the law say about dogs being restrained in cars?

Ask Harriet Harman - she's been fined (and banned) for multiple driving offences.

itsgettingweird · 14/06/2023 20:18

People need to understand propaganda and how to people get persuaded to believe lies.

This.

I wish they'd focus more on this sort of things in the history curriculum and include it in PSHE.

Or Sunak, who was recently fined for a motoring offence?

I'm not sure calling out lying really needs a smear campaign, but that might just be me.

I can't believe calling out lying is seen as a smear campaign rather than the abhorrent act it is.

'Through the power of maniupulation and propganda'

Yes the media and critics smear campaigns have been relentless haven't they. Nice to finally agree on something.

Oh there are plenty of ways that quote is being used.
Manipulation and propaganda, use of language etc, the use of the media as a tool - you can see it everywhere - to try to influence people and manipulate them.

Critical thinking.

Such an important thing to understand.

The thing with the Starmer and Johnson investigation and that Johnson received a FPN - is that it was a whole year apart and different rules

The basic rules were quite similar in fact;
Gathering indoors with people from outside your household or support bubble was against the law. (April 2021 re-Starmer)

Groups of up to six people could meet outdoors on both dates - although pubs, restaurants, bars could serve groups of up to 6 people/2 households) outdoors in 2021. (Non-essential shops were open in June 2020).

jgw1 · 14/06/2023 20:47

Since I don't think any of them post on here, I wonder if anyone who does post here know what the law says about dogs in cars.

Clavinova · 14/06/2023 20:49

Or Sunak, who was recently fined for a motoring offence?

Only one? Harriet Harman has at least three that I know of.

cakeorwine · 14/06/2023 20:49

Critical thinking - when Johnson was talking about 40 new hospitals - he should have been asked at the start what he meant by that.

When he was talking about biggest investment in the NHS, was that relative to inflation or in real cash terms or not?

People should be taught not to just accept something at face value but to think about what someone is saying and question it.

It's a constant thing when anyone from the Government says something at the moment.

cakeorwine · 14/06/2023 20:53

It's also critical thinking to know when not to bother engaging with derailers.

But to ask "Why are they doing it?"

And then not engage.

It's critical thinking to remember that this is not about his parties but whether he mislead Parliament in his statements to Parliament about the reassurances that guidance had been followed, or even whether he sought reassurances that guidance had been followed.

Do we think he sought reassurances that guidance had been followed and was he told that guidance had not been followed but told us that guidance had been followed?

Or

Did he not seek reassurances but told us that he had sought reassurances?

This is a thread about Boris. Any derailment either about dogs in cars, dancing nurses or Sir Beer will not be tolerated.

People should be taught not to just accept something at face value but to think about what someone is saying and question it.

Indeed - this was a lie;
"All restaurants and pubs were closed so takeaways were really the only way you could eat," [Starmer] told Good Morning Britain.

Restaurants and pubs were open for outside eating in groups of up to 6 - Starmer ate at an outside restaurant the evening before in Hull.

I think Johnson probably asked what everyone thought he could get away with saying, they came up with various options, someone said "you have been assured that all rules were followed" someone else disagreed, because a) how could one know that all rules were followed, b) they weren't c) well it would be lying, but Johnson said it anyway.

The story broke the night before.

He would have known it was coming up.

I wonder if he thought that someone might ask him how he had been assured.

Was that in the Committee hearings? I didn't see all of it.

There was a thread of questioning as I recall as to who had assured him, was it a government lawyer - no, or perhaps a SPAD - maybe. Others may remember better.

DuncinToffee · 14/06/2023 21:01

He went off script during the hearing, remember Pannick's face? I think that was about being given assurances from others.
