What are you ‘I’m old’ references that younger folk might not understand ?
I’ll start: ‘too orangey for crows, it’s just for me and my dog’

@Mrsjayy 😂 that was one of my favourites!

My son thinks it's hilarious that BBC1 used to 'go to bed' and play the National Anthem followed by the beeeeeeeeeeep.

@Newgolddream70 you knew where you were with the beeeep 😃

I remember the rolling news 24 starting and watching in the middle of the night just because you could.

theblackradiator
my ds hot one of those from a car boot a few years ago.

creepy stuff I watched as a child?
hammer house of horrors
tales of the unexpected
day of the triffids
V
some apocalyptic bbc tv thing with tripods enslaving the human race (not war of the worlds)
listening to Jeff waynes war of the worlds on long car trips.
all of the above freaked me out.

other stuff I remember (not creepy)
Battle star gallactica
Rocky Horror (yes really!)
little shop of horrors

Oh yes to Day of the triffids terrifying 😳

I know it has been mentioned before but Threads was really disturbing because it could have happened.

JRHartleysmum · 09/06/2023 20:20

Has no one mentioned being traumatised by watching The Snowman and Watership Down

StarShapedWindow · 09/06/2023 22:00

Can anyone remember The Lightning Tree? It’s super old and I watched repeats in the morning at about 6:30am in the late 80’s.

CountingMareep · 09/06/2023 22:22

Kids used to walk around the playground with arms linked calling for anyone who wanted to join up for playing a particular game. If it was a popular one there would be a huge line of kids at the end, all with linked arms.

Oh God I was traumatised by that. It used to be ‘Join on the end if you want to play XX’ and whenever I tried to ‘join on’ some little shit would push me away and say ‘Not you!’

They were crazy about a game called ‘Off Ground It’, a version of ‘It’ (or Tag) where you couldn’t be caught if your feet were off the ground. I was rubbish at running so hated this game, but I still managed to break a tooth on the climbing frame during a game.

Follyfoot? With Steve and Dora?

I bloody loved that and had the books too. If it is repeated I would love to know where!

🎶Down in the meadow where the wind blows free
In the middle of a field stands a lightning tree
Its limbs all torn from the day it was born
For the tree was born in a thunderstorm
Grow, grow, the lightning tree
It's never too late for you and me
Grow, grow, the lightning tree
Never give in too easily🎶

'Texan. Sure is a mighty chew'

I was trying to describe the game at the end of (I think it was) Crackerjack- where they had to hold all the prizes, and there was always a cabbage? to ds2 the other day. He asked me if that was an 'old timey' thing...

Whenever I see somebody carrying too much I say all you need is a cabbage - usually they back away from me looking concerned! Grin

I like a nice crinkle crunch with my dinner

I bought a packet the other day and as I was opening it I sang the song.

DS(15) looked at me like I'd grown another head 😂😂😂🤣

Oh god yes! The Snowman melting - beyond sad. And the cartoon version of the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. I had to leave the room and was inconsolable when Aslan died. Watership Down I will never get over!

DorritLittle · 10/06/2023 03:19

Had totally forgotten the arms linking thing. How did all kids from all kids know to do the same thing?’

DorritLittle · 10/06/2023 03:20

All kids from all schools that should have said…

DorritLittle · 10/06/2023 03:25

Does anyone remember a schools programme during the daytime called Watch? There was one episode about Halloween and the witch in it was petrifying. I refused to watch the programme ever again.

Speaking of which did anyone else watch the schools programmes at home as a preschooler, like Music Time? (After Pebble Mill) Because they were the only kids programmes during the day!

We used to link arms and walk around singing ‘who’s playing mums and dads, no boys allowed to play’

"What about the vegetables?"
"Oh, they'll have what I'm having!"

And the later "more peas dear"

Yes Mr Brittas, sorry Mr Brittas....

I still refer to somewhere boring as being 'like John Major's living room'. No-one gets it yet still I persist.

Yes (if it's the same one) - I hated that too. There was a song "we're witches of Halloween wooo ooooh". I couldn't watch it!

VioletCharlotte · 10/06/2023 15:00

Watching The Mary Whitehouse Experience or Harry Enfield and everyone talking about it at school the next day (secondary) I can still remember some of the catchphrases!

In Primary, there was always some toy that was the latest must have craze...I pestered my Mum for a rubix cube and a rubix snake. Who remembers the yo-yo's you could get if you bought cans of coke/ Fanta/ sprite and saved up the tokens?
