What are you ‘I’m old’ references that younger folk might not understand ?
I’ll start: ‘too orangey for crows, it’s just for me and my dog’

What an amazing thread! And makes me feel much less strange for having all my old childhood annuals my shelf!

Armchair Thriller - the opening titles scared the wits out of me . And that episode with the nun and the rocking chair 😱

Pearl and Dean at the cinemas.

Salon Selectives - “like you’ve just stepped out of the salon, Salon Selectives “

OMG that nun. That frightened the bejeezus out of me at the time, I can still remember it really clearly. Superlative horror but why on earth was it on pre-watershed?

Mind you, some of the public info films of the day have scarred my soul too - I'm still traumatised by 'Apaches', the one where kids playing on a farm died various horrible and very graphic deaths. Imagine the outcry if anything like that was broadcast during the daytime now...

I don't know most of these so I'm assuming I'm not gen x? I was born in 1984?

I think gen X is 1965-1982 I may be wrong. you are a millennial.

theblackradiator · 09/06/2023 11:04

Tales of the unexpected. those silhouettes of the women dancing in the fire 🔥. there was some creepy shit on TV back in the 80s!

Mrsjayy · 09/06/2023 11:07

Tales of the unexpected is on some random TV channel my stepdad watches it over and over

yes I think I saw myself on some random channel not long ago. I watched some of one episode it seemed more creepy now than it did back then when I was a child it was so weird.

Mrsjayy · 09/06/2023 11:22

Yes it's really creepy, I must have been 9 or 10 and allowed to watch it !

Pharos · 09/06/2023 11:26

There was some seriously bleak stuff at times - Terrahawks terrified me, Battle of the Planets had its moments too. I have vague memories of one of the badly dubbed European children’s dramas about two countries that were side by side, one was happy and free, the other militaristic and had a freezing ray to attack the other one…
Remember watching the opening credits to Threads and the image of the melting milk bottle still gives me goosebumps. The one episode I sneaked down to see glimpses of was when the woman gave birth 😱

Mrsjayy · 09/06/2023 11:30

Oh I'm trying to think what that side by side programme was called? Yes the late 70s early 80s was bleak for television.

I vaguely remember a kids puppet programme with a creepy as feck rabbit really scared me.

Newgolddream70 · 09/06/2023 11:33

Do you mean Pipkins @Mrsjayy? That was Hartley Hare 😄

theblackradiator · 09/06/2023 11:35

These. I'm sure we had this exact same one. I saw one in a charity shop last year and had to buy it as it brought back so many memories of childhood. they're selling them again now apparently.

Gen X where are you ????
Mrsjayy · 09/06/2023 11:35

That's the fecker! Haunted my dreams 😂

Newgolddream70 · 09/06/2023 12:06

@Mrsjayy 😂 that was one of my favourites!

My son thinks it's hilarious that BBC1 used to 'go to bed' and play the National Anthem followed by the beeeeeeeeeeep.

CoffeeAndFagToStartTheDay · 09/06/2023 15:15

oh and vague memories programme called the lightning tree, I liked it but could never remember what time so missed quite a few.

There was this dubbed TV series called Silos about a boy who ran away and stole a black horse and he had a friend who rode a white pony, they travelled all over trying to stay out of trouble. loved it.

CoffeeAndFagToStartTheDay · 09/06/2023 15:22

ah it was silas not silos.

heres the intro, just look at the beautiful horse! it was a bad influence on me all I wanted to do was run away and gallop along a beach forever 😆

haven't found any that are dubbed or have subtitles yet though.

Silas - 80s Kids TV Drama

Starting with a childhood memory now, and on this day (30/05) in 1984 the third episode of the German series Silas aired on BBC1. Do you remember this one? T...

I would have to add Armchair Thriller to creepy stuff , Oh and Sapphire and Steel .

JRHartleysmum · 09/06/2023 16:45

Chocky - kids used to whisper it in a scary voice at school
Tripods - terrified me
Sapphire & Steel - especially the one with the ghost soldier
The witch in Chorlton and the wheelies
The wheelers in Return to oz
