What are you ‘I’m old’ references that younger folk might not understand ?
I’ll start: ‘too orangey for crows, it’s just for me and my dog’

@ChocChipHandbag That is quite brilliant . I have a Playschool annual I bought some years ago on Ebay . I love Playschool but most footage was lost years ago at a bbc storing facility .

My toys were called Big Ted, Hamble and Jenima. I wasn’t a very original child. Little Ted did get translated to Wee Ted though.

I wonder where the name Hamble came from?

I always liked “Katoo” the Cockatoo, too.

Weird fact - I read recently that the Rev Richard Coles has found love again after the death of his husband with the son of Brian Cant.

ChocChipHandbag · 08/06/2023 23:36

Did anyone else have this read to them as a child? I am now reading it to DS, who is 6. He never met my Mum so I love that I am reading him the same stories she read to me. I found a recording of Johnny Morris reading them, but DS says he prefers me Smile

@ChocChipHandbag I soo badly wanted the rocking horse Dapple , sooo badly . I loved the clock , there is a little bit of footage on youtube but not much 😢.

Inkypot · 08/06/2023 23:41

@ChocChipHandbag I'm a little mortified to admit this but I went through a spell of thinking Hamble would be such a good baby name 🙈
Thankfully never told anyone so my children have fortunately escaped being named Hamble.

wildinthecountry · 08/06/2023 23:43

Hamble sounds German does it not ?

Ha ha that’s brilliant. It’s no worse than a lot of names! Someone should resurrect it, but most Play school watchers will be beyond child bearing age now!

@wildinthecountry I’d forgotten Dapple! Whoa boy!

Now you've said it yes I can see that too. Wonder if it is or if it's just a bit similar to Hansel.

ChocChipHandbag · 08/06/2023 23:48

No name origin info on Wikipedia but this is funny!

I don't if it is German, there is apparently a river hamble in UK . I've nominated this thread for classics by the way . It has been a nice trip down memory lane 🤗.

ChocChipHandbag · 09/06/2023 00:08

wildinthecountry · 09/06/2023 00:13

That piece in the Guardian is funny , triggered some memories of Brian Cant sitting in a box driving a car/lorry whatever 😊.

Does anyone remember the BBC1 kids game show called the satellite show in the late 80s? Our school went on the show a few of my classmates were contestants while the rest of us in the class were in the audience. it was a very exciting evening out. I'd love to see footage of that show now. I've scoured YouTube with no luck.

@Inkypot Thank you but I've checked these episodes already and they are not the one. there were 26 episodes from 2 series in 88&89. Hopefully it will turn up one day.

I had a baby doll called Hamble and a soft/ rag doll type called Jemima - totally forgotten about that till this thread. Oh I loved my Hamble. I also thought it was German for some reason??

xoomer · 09/06/2023 07:03

I don't know most of these so I'm assuming I'm not gen x? I was born in 1984?

InMySpareTime · 09/06/2023 07:07

1984 is solidly Millennial

ohyouknowwhatshername · 09/06/2023 07:40

Did anyone else read Look-in? I remember the ads 'Look in to Look-innnn'.

I have a homemade Jemima, heavily mended Humpty, Big Bear and Little Bear in my loft…. I think Hamble was my sister’s Tiny Tears doll!
