How much would you expect to pay for this?

If you're in a cafe and order chicken mayonnaise sandwiches but ask to add a little chopped red onion to the sandwich.

How much would you expect to pay for the addition of red onion?

I would expect no more than 20p for a bit of extra veg or salad on-top of that advertised filling.

That is actual daylight robbery.

Effingmagicfairy · 03/06/2023 18:40

Seems like they are going down a ‘standard process’ route - same charge for anything extra. My work do this on a much bigger scale…..

Greenbeanmcgee · 03/06/2023 17:43

Thanks all. I appreciate the responses.

So £2.95 for a bit of chopped onion is a little excessive then?

Well £7.50 for one sandwich is already a joke, so what's another £3? Who is paying almost £10 for a sandwich???

BTMadmummy · 03/06/2023 18:49

I wouldn’t expect to pay anything

Howtosolveit · 03/06/2023 18:52

If it helps I paid £12 for a packet of ibuprofen last week. That's the last time I pop into a chemist in Mayfair!

DoingSomethingUnholy · 03/06/2023 19:01

Leave a rubbish review and don't go back. They are ripping people off, I'd be ok adding up to £1 (at a push), anything more is a piss take.

InSpainTheRain · 03/06/2023 19:09

80p maybe. But surely if they encourage ppl to order the fillings they like then they should all be priced up?

dontgobaconmyheart · 03/06/2023 19:11

2.95 seems daft but ultimately it's surely our own responsibility to check what's being charged before we order if we order off menu - knowing that really can charge what they like.

I never get the point of the guesswork threads, why not just say in the OP that you were charged nearly 3 quid for a bit of onion and what do people make of it etc

Yanbu to be miffed though, I can't say I'd go back even if they did begrudgingly remove it from the bill.

Where was that?

Venice?

I was going to guess 50p but no more that £1.50.
They are having an absolute laugh. Of course you must leave a review to advise other customers, it’s your civic duty.

Not even London? 😲

Ah but it was "Artisan" darling...... disgusting how much things are costing nowadays!!!

MochiDonutt · 03/06/2023 17:44

£2.95 - that's nuts!

No - Nuts would gave been an extra £4.95 😁

Greenbeanmcgee · 03/06/2023 19:19

Thanks all for the opinions.

I won't be rushing back. I should have asked but the lack of transparency is bothering me even more than the price though like most, I do think £2.95 is ridiculous.

Thelastofbus · 03/06/2023 19:22

I’d have guessed 20p! But the only sandwich shop I go to charges about £4 for a takeaway sandwich made to order, and then asks you if you want any salad - which can include onion if you wish, and they don’t charge anything extra. And their sandwiches are delicious! I’m a bit surprised at so many people guessing £1 for a bit of garnish!

ArgosKettle · 03/06/2023 19:24

A local cafe - maybe 60p - £1.

An upmarket restaurant or somewhere in a busier location (central london) - anywhere between £1-3.

ArgosKettle · 03/06/2023 19:26

Greenbeanmcgee · 03/06/2023 17:27

The sandwiches are normally £7.50

Blooming hell
that’s expensive for 1 sandwich!

I wouldn’t pay for it but each to their own.

NowItsLikeSnowAtTheBeach · 03/06/2023 19:27

Rip Off Britain isn't just a silly saying, apparently. That's shocking. They should be named and shamed in reviews.

GeraltsBathtub · 03/06/2023 19:29

That’s insane. I know you’re paying for the labour for the onion to be chopped and put on your sandwich or whatever but it takes a couple of minutes max and red onion is less than a pound a kilo! Tbh, £7.50 for a sandwich is already more than I’d pay. Our local sandwich shop (SE England) charges £4.90 for a chicken mayo and extra onion would be 10p.

@Greenbeanmcgee

That’s very expensive for a sandwich in Scotland. Central london maybe but Scotland!?!

what type of bread are they using there?
Even for homemade bread I wouldn’t pay it.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 03/06/2023 19:30

my local artisan cafe charges £6.95 for a sandwich plus £1.50 extra toppings though apart from wrapped ones they only seem to do fish finger sandwiches and butties.

ArgosKettle · 03/06/2023 19:32

I live in an affluent part of London (very central) and pay max £4.50-5.50 for a sandwich and that’s the top end of my budget.

£7.50 for a basic sandwich that most likely won’t even fill you up is extortionate.

ilovepixie · 03/06/2023 19:34

I work in a sandwich bar where a sandwich with 1 meat and 4 salad fillings cost £3.99. An extra meat is £1 and an extra salad filling is 70p
