How much would you expect to pay for this?

If you're in a cafe and order chicken mayonnaise sandwiches but ask to add a little chopped red onion to the sandwich.

How much would you expect to pay for the addition of red onion?

Yes £2.95 is insane.
I work in a cafe - sandwiches are all base price £4.50 and we charge +£1 for any extra item or +50p for salad.

Paperlate · 04/06/2023 19:18

Perhaps the till is set up so all extra fillings are charged at 2.95.

I really like cheese on a toasted teacake (although we always called it a teasted toecake in my house). That doesn’t seem weird to me, what on earth does your brother have in it?
well @WomanOfSteel , he just used it instead of a bread cake for everything - I think tuna Mayo is the weirdest I remember!

Now that would be minging. 🤢 I remember being picked on by an older girl at primary as she said having a teacake with cheese on for packed lunch was weird. It went on for a few days with her getting other children to comment on it and I felt that uncomfortable about it that I asked my mum to give me proper bread. Wish I’d stuck to my guns now. My sister had a friend that used to take cabbage sandwiches. They stunk apparently.

Intriguedbythis · 04/06/2023 19:35

Free- 1 quid max

Colinorpercy · 04/06/2023 19:36

That’s bonkers, will be on guard if visiting any Milngavie cafes! That’s pretty much an extra 50% of the cost for a wee bit of onion!

LennyBalls · 04/06/2023 19:42

Either nothing or possibly about 20p

Alinino124 · 04/06/2023 20:35

Nothing

IDontWantToBeAPie · 04/06/2023 20:45

For added red onion I'd expect 50p. Maybe £1 if they're being jammy and any/every addition is £1 from onion to avo or bacon etc

AppleandSpice · 04/06/2023 20:51

I was going to say between 50p and £1 but £2.95 is shocking!

But then again I wouldn’t be paying £7.50 for a sandwich in the first place. You were robbed!

Dibbydoos · 04/06/2023 21:11

If it makes you feel better, in 2011, I ordered a £7.50 side salad in a pub to go with my main. When ut arrived, it cobsisted of one small tomato uncut, one leaf of lettuce and 3 pieces of onion in a pub in a crappy part of London. I said you're kidding that's not a £7.50 salad and they said it was, so I sent it back.

Sounds like yoyr sandwich shop has set a flat cost for any additional topping, which is as mad as a box of frogs! But honestly probably why they encourage you to buy off menu..!!!

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 04/06/2023 21:25

I think that is a ridiculous overcharge.

Bignanny30 · 04/06/2023 22:02

For a bit of red onion - f all !

Sarahtm35 · 04/06/2023 22:15

10p tops

threatmatrix · 04/06/2023 22:17

Do you expect not to be charged for something they have to buy in?

threatmatrix · 04/06/2023 22:17

do they get it for free?

changeme4this · 04/06/2023 22:17

From a tradespersons point of view, if a job takes half a tube of silicon you quote/charge for the whole tube because you can’t buy half tubes ..

so I would think the price of an onion (are they imported there?).

however they are unreasonable by not advertising/displaying an extras list and cost.

ps is that the price of a normal sandwich as in think I’m my currency that’s an extraordinary amount …

FedUpWithEverything123 · 04/06/2023 22:18

This is why I love Subway - all veg toppings are free

porridgeisbae · 04/06/2023 22:21

@FedUpWithEverything123 Well, they're part of the overall cost of the thing.

FedUpWithEverything123 · 04/06/2023 22:25

@porridgeisbae obviously - but a sub is £4.99 and as many veg toppings as you want. Other companies could adopt this model - but the cafe in question charges £7.50 base sandwich charge plus £2.95 for each additional topping.

Dullardmullard · 04/06/2023 22:38

Snack van 50p

cafe £1

£2.95 is really taking the piss

porridgeisbae · 04/06/2023 22:49

@FedUpWithEverything123 Yep the 7.50 is only justifiable if it comes with some sides or is a footlong type of size one or something.

And 3 quid for an extra topping, esp. of the 3rd cheapest veg in the UK after potatoes and carrot, is ridiculous.

@changeme4this The onions probably cost them a few pennies. They're really cheap in Aldi and as they're a cafe they probably get catering stuff cheaper than that.

Badbudgeter · 04/06/2023 22:53

I get a really very nice sandwich from a local bakery for less than £2.95 which includes salad. I hate red onions so they do mines without. I’ve always thought of them as quite expensive so I have one as a weekly treat. Maybe it’s better value than I thought.

DZbornak · 04/06/2023 23:03

Please state where in Milngavie because I'm feeling very nosy 😁2.95 is an absolute and utter joke, I was affronted at paying 1.50 for a wee bit of red onion on a tuna and cheese panini from a Bearsden cafe! Didn't say anything though, not that I'm judging that you did

Whydoiwearsomuchleopardprint · 04/06/2023 23:07

Absolutely nothing, it’s a bit of chopped onion!! Same way that I don’t ever want butter or mayo or salt or pepper but I don’t ask for a discount for that! Totally ridiculous to be asked to pay anything for small amount of chopped onion!!

AngelicaSchuylerAndHerSisters · 04/06/2023 23:29

@Greenbeanmcgee i’m waving from Milngavie and wondering which place it was!
