How much would you expect to pay for this?

If you're in a cafe and order chicken mayonnaise sandwiches but ask to add a little chopped red onion to the sandwich.

How much would you expect to pay for the addition of red onion?

You were robbed!

Greenbeanmcgee · 04/06/2023 23:31

It wasn't Milngavie. It was in a different posh town in another county. I only mentioned Milngavie because someone commented that they're from Bearsden so I gave them a wave from here in Milngavie. Sorry for the confusion.

Gosh. I'd have said £1.20 in London and 50p anywhere else!

£2.95 is taking the piss. What did they do, send someone all the way to the market and back for your onion?

porridgeisbae · 05/06/2023 00:42

@DZbornak @AngelicaSchuylerAndHerSisters You'll be 'forced' (i.e. have an excuse) to try out all the different places now, for research purposes. Smile

WotsitsMadeIn1927 · 05/06/2023 01:31

Onions are cheap to buy anyway, so I’d expect to pay around 50p but no more than a £1. What did you have to pay in the end?

JennyJenny8675309 · 05/06/2023 03:00

So they’re charging nearly 40% extra for adding red onion? Talk about taking the piss!! (Maybe it’s an error in my maths?😆)

From a tradespersons point of view, if a job takes half a tube of silicon you quote/charge for the whole tube because you can’t buy half tubes ..

so I would think the price of an onion (are they imported there?).

however they are unreasonable by not advertising/displaying an extras list and cost.

ps is that the price of a normal sandwich as in think I’m my currency that’s an extraordinary amount …

While I agree with you about the tube of silicon, it doesn't apply in the OPs situation because:

A sandwich shop will almost certainly have a constant supply of sliced onion to use as it's a basic ingredient in many sandwiches.

So there's not really any extra material or labour cost in adding a bit to the OPs sandwich because a whole onion costs 10 to 20 pence, and only a small fraction would have been used.

Even if someone had to start preparing a new onion and they threw the rest away, £2.95 is a ridiculous cost, and should have been advertised. You'd expect to pay that amount for a whole extra main filling such as a full portion of meat or fish, not a bit of onion.

Yes £7.50 is high end for a sandwich, but wouldn't be unsurprising in a nice sit down location with it served on a plate with a bit of salad/few crisps on the side. It's a bit much if it's a takeaway with no extras.

MeinKraft · 05/06/2023 07:01

I'd want the entire sandwich for £2.95 Confused

HeartbrokenAunt · 05/06/2023 07:57

Feck all is what I’d expect to pay! Really? Pay for a tiny bit of onion when the customer is already buying a sandwich with an expensive protein and no doubt a drink? Staff discretion is needed here but most cafe staff are blinkered to this now, cost savings are drilled into them and “computer says no” to any menu changes. I use a locally owned cafe with staff who are great craic. The menu offers a cheese and tomato omelette or a tomato and onion omelette. I love all three ingredients and I’ve never been charged the extra. They know I’ll be back weekly.

Rottweilermummy · 05/06/2023 07:58

50p- £1 max depends on sandwich and price if its bog standard with nothing else shouldn't be more than 50 if they are encouraging people to add fillings then should already be prepared and no extra trouble , depends on establishment as to how much they would charge but should be on menu cost of extra fillings

T1Dmama · 05/06/2023 12:16

A maximum of 50p

Soozikinzii · 05/06/2023 12:21

That's ridiculous !

pollymere · 05/06/2023 12:29

I had a tuna and cheese panini last weekend at about the same price. Asked for red onion, expecting to be charged 50p-£1. Didn't get charged a penny more and I know they had to chop one up especially. An extra £3 seems ridiculous in a place where pretty much all the sandwiches are the same price.

ellyeth · 05/06/2023 14:09

I think nothing, or maybe 50p would be reasonable.

Nanof8 · 05/06/2023 17:39

I would say nothing unless they have a sign indicating that extras are a certain cost. The sandwich shops here usually only charge extra for extra meat, cheese, or avocado 🥑.

Jamhamlamb · 05/06/2023 18:26

The whole bloody sandwich would be £2.95 here

whynotwhatknot · 05/06/2023 19:00

Ridiculous-i know times are hard but wtf

they cant say have anything in your sandwich for a set price then charge extra for a piece of onion

kennycat · 05/06/2023 19:05

Nothing! If I was paying £1 for some red onion I’d expect it to have had something pretty special done to it!!

Yikes if I suspected they were throwing the rest of the onion away I’d be v annoyed. Food waste is a no no in my book!!

bullywee · 05/06/2023 20:41

@Greenbeanmcgee Newton Means by any chance?

DZbornak · 06/06/2023 21:34

@porridgeisbae
You are so right, as good an excuse as any 🙂

GUARDIAN1 · 09/06/2023 16:00

If it's just a few slices of onion for 1 sandwich, honestly I wouldn't charge. If they have to, I'd say 50p max.
