If you're in a cafe and order chicken mayonnaise sandwiches but ask to add a little chopped red onion to the sandwich.

How much would you expect to pay for the addition of red onion?

50p-£1 for the onion

Maybe £2 is it was say avocado, extra meat

Greenbeanmcgee · 03/06/2023 17:43

Thanks all. I appreciate the responses.

So £2.95 for a bit of chopped onion is a little excessive then?

OP posts:
MochiDonutt · 03/06/2023 17:44

£2.95 - that's nuts!

Oioicaptain · 03/06/2023 17:45

Bloody hell.£2.95 is ridiculous! Honestly, I would have thought that it would have been free.

Fuck, I thought I was going to get ridiculed for suggesting 2 quid! Hope you questioned the cost?!

OnTheTuftedWilton · 03/06/2023 17:49

I would have expected nothing, won't be concerned at 50p but £2.95, I would never go back and would leave a review to warn others

Crunchymum · 03/06/2023 17:50

Did they tell you the price beforehand or was it just added to the bill?

If the former I hope you went without the red onion and if the latter I hope you complained?

Mumof4alsoabonus · 03/06/2023 17:52

Nothing or a nominal amount, it’s red onion

MavisTheMonkey · 03/06/2023 17:52

Wow that's ridiculous!! Did you complain?

I was going to guess high and say £1.50 but yikes that's taking the piss a bit! Did they tell you it would be an extra £3 quid before hand? It's a bonkers amount when compared to the cost of a full sandwich.

Mumof4alsoabonus · 03/06/2023 17:53

£2.95 for red onion when all the sandwiches cost the same? Surely that’s a mistake

TidyDancer · 03/06/2023 17:54

£2.95! That's insane! Did you challenge them on it? I'd love to know their justification for that!

tailinthejam · 03/06/2023 17:55

No wonder they encourage people to add extra options. I can understand it being a couple of quid if someone wants to add cheese to a ham sandwich (or vice versa) to make it a cheese and ham one, but a bit of onion?

LibertyLily · 03/06/2023 17:55

That's crazy....

I was going to say 50p.

Susuwatariandkodama · 03/06/2023 17:56

I would say 50p, £1 max.

£2.95 is extortionate!

Greenbeanmcgee · 03/06/2023 17:56

No they didn't tell me in advance. I did complain and they grudgingly removed it from the bill. I don't mind paying extra for it if necessary but I thought £2.95 for less than a tenth of a small red onion was taking the piss. I could have had a steak or prawn baguette for the additional cost they wanted to charge me.

OP posts:
Redglitter · 03/06/2023 17:56

Whaaaat that taking the piss. My local shop only charges 50p extra per item for their breakfast rolls. That's outrageous

MyFaceIsAnAONB · 03/06/2023 17:57

Nothing/would think about it. More than 50p seems mad for a bit of red onion.

I know the type of sandwich shop you mean OP, I’ve got a hankering now!

Crinkle77 · 03/06/2023 17:57

I wouldn't even class red onion as a filling. More if an accompaniment. I mean you wouldn't have an onion sandwich would you. It's literally a few rings of onion if that.

MyFaceIsAnAONB · 03/06/2023 17:57

*WOULDNT think about it

viques · 03/06/2023 17:57

Ouch, £2.95 for a slice or two of onion brings tears to my eyes!

gettingoldisshit · 03/06/2023 17:58

I own a catering business and I wouldn't charge anything if someone asked this.

Happygirl79 · 03/06/2023 17:58

Total exploitation

Very underhanded of them to not inform you of how much extra it would be before adding it. I wouldn't have been able to keep a straight face when they said it was an extra £3! Would love to have heard them try to justify it.

It's good that they removed it but it would probably put me off using them again.

SpeckledlyHen · 03/06/2023 17:58

That is an absolute piss take for a bit of red onion!
