Any medics out there? I'm worried about my husband

He's 50. Had a urine infection with quite a lot of blood in Uribe about 12 days ago. Got antibiotics and the infection resolved, only to come back a three days later: very I'll this time, unable to leave bed even for the toilet. Passing urine ok although with less flow.

New antibiotics, seemed to be working and yesterday went out of the house and ate normally. but awful, awful shivering fits the night before and again last night, then profuse sweating. He's up now but we both sense something is very wrong.

He's under GP care and has some prostate test on Wednesday. I'm worried this could be sepsis or some form of organ failure. I think it's time for hospital but he's reluctant.

Not a medic but first thing I thought reading this was sepsis, call 111 now

UpUpUpU · 13/05/2023 09:09

If you are worried about sepsis get to A&E immediately

PriamFarrl · 13/05/2023 09:10

Go to the bloody hospital. Men and their sodding reluctance to go to doctors.

Have you taken his temp? I would get him to a and e if it's hitting 39

TR888 · 13/05/2023 09:13

He doesn't seem to have a temperature now. He doesn't seem to like that I'm putting pressure in him to go to hospital. The GP surgery opens at 10 and he wants to request a drs phone appointment, then take it from there.

111 will tell you to go to urgent care or a and e. I'd go straight there.

Jellycatspyjamas · 13/05/2023 09:17

You’ve just described my ex-H when he had sepsis from a urine infection. I’d be taking him to A&E, sepsis isn’t to be messed with.

TR888 · 13/05/2023 09:17

It's so odd because he has moments when he almost feels back to normal, and then he's got this terrible shivering nd sweating.

Jellycatspyjamas · 13/05/2023 09:18

Yep my ex had that on and off for a couple of days but got very poorly very quickly thereafter.

CountryStore · 13/05/2023 09:18

If you have a sense that something is very wrong, you should go to A&E, this is a possible sign/symptom.of sepsis

Cherryana · 13/05/2023 09:20

Please look at this from the both sides

  1. We lost a day due to waiting in an and e. How annoying.
  2. We lost my husband because we didn’t go to an and e. How devastating.
I know which one I would prefer.
FrownedUpon · 13/05/2023 09:22

Just go to A& E. Why are you waiting around?

BarryK3nt · 13/05/2023 09:23

Men are more likely to need IV antibiotics and hospital admission for UTIs than women. With sepsis there is often no high temperature, instead the person can go hypothermic instead. I suspect the GP or 111 will advise him to go to hospital so it’s probably best not to wait any longer and go straight there.

NeedCoffeeNowPlease · 13/05/2023 09:24

I'd say hospital for this one.

Sunshineandrainbow · 13/05/2023 09:25

Could be urosepsis.
Go to a and E asap to rule this out or get treated

DyslexicPoster · 13/05/2023 09:26

Can you phone 111 on his behalf? Will he get through to the gp with no issues?

Can2022getanyworse · 13/05/2023 09:27

My mum's sepsis was misdiagnosed because her body was too busy fighting the infection she was riddled with that it couldn't raise her temperature. She died less than 36 hours after admission.

Get to the hospital now.

CosmosQueen · 13/05/2023 09:30

How many more times do you need to be told he needs to go to A+E, now.
It sounds like he’s having rigors and needs urgent medical attention.

tulips27 · 13/05/2023 09:31

That shaking is called rigours, I believe. I guess your husband needs IV antibiotics, suggest you make your way to A&E.

tulips27 · 13/05/2023 09:33

I wasn't copying you, @CosmosQueen I promise, I know this because I had it myself.

OP, AFAIK the GP cannot administer IV antibiotics, he needs hospital care today. Don't wait.

Fuckitydoodah · 13/05/2023 09:34

Definitely go to a&e. Better to go and it turns out to be not as bad as you think. Than to not go and it's a lot lot worse, or too late.

Goodiewhemper · 13/05/2023 09:35

Dh is a medic. He said UTI is one if the most common sources of sepsis. As your DH is on his second antibiotic and is still shivering he said he should go straight to A&E for a full assessment. Hope he feels better soon.

LunaTheCat · 13/05/2023 09:35

He sounds septic.. call 111 and say so or drive him to hospital .. whichever is quicker

TR888 · 13/05/2023 09:36

Cosmosqueen I want him to go to hospital but it's he who needs convincing. And can I tell you that your tone has upset me. I'm very worried here, you know.

Thanks to everyone else. I've just talked to him and he's agreed to ask for a hospital referral. Is going to A E best?

Urosepsis. Call an ambulance.
