Any medics out there? I'm worried about my husband

He's 50. Had a urine infection with quite a lot of blood in Uribe about 12 days ago. Got antibiotics and the infection resolved, only to come back a three days later: very I'll this time, unable to leave bed even for the toilet. Passing urine ok although with less flow.

New antibiotics, seemed to be working and yesterday went out of the house and ate normally. but awful, awful shivering fits the night before and again last night, then profuse sweating. He's up now but we both sense something is very wrong.

He's under GP care and has some prostate test on Wednesday. I'm worried this could be sepsis or some form of organ failure. I think it's time for hospital but he's reluctant.

I haven't read the whole thread so you may already be at A&E. But, I have had sepsis following an infection that wasn't responding to antibiotics. You MUST get to hospital immediately. If it is sepsis, you will suddenly go downhill very, very quickly, by which time it will be too late. If your husband feels there is something dreadfully wrong, then it is. You get a sense of dread with sepsis. Go now, and if he is already there, ask about sepsis.

Not being flippant but where do you live that has a GP surgery open on Saturday?

We have several in my town, west Sussex they take it in turns.

Sepsis may also present with an unusually low temperature rather than a very high one.

Exactly.

@TR888 I was attended by paramedics about 20 months ago. I didn't want to go to hospital, I just wanted to go home (I was in a carpark) I tried to convince them I was'fine' but they weren't having a bar of it! They said I'd earned a ride with blues & their company 😂. I just wanted to be at home, in my safe & comfortable place, pretending everything was ok, not in A&E. It's scary & you feel vulnerable. I

Thank God they weren't easily swayed is all I can say!

I hope DH is ok x

Dymaxion · 13/05/2023 21:52

So glad you managed to get him to A&E, if he is really unwell then no amount of vocally downplaying things will match his blood tests. Once in A&E my husband merrily informed me he should be home in a couple of hours as they thought it was just a chest infection, I knew it wasn't and he ended up in hospital for 4 nights.

Boopeedoop · 13/05/2023 22:06

Any updates?

TR888 · 13/05/2023 22:07

Hi all. My husband is back home now. He's very happy with the care and tests they've done, and he's been told there's no evidence of sepsis. He's been told the shivering is part of his body's response to his infection. He seems fine now and went for a short walk earlier. Fingers crossed this is just a nasty infection, but I'll keep an eye on him in case he suddenly deteriorates.

Thank you all for being so supportive 🙂

How’s your dh feeling today?

uncomfortablydumb53 · 14/05/2023 13:26

Glad to hear he's feeling a little better

DGay · 14/05/2023 17:36

In 2006, my husband was in great deal of abdominal pain. I was going to call for an ambulance to go to ER, but he didn't want to go. The next day, the pain was worse. He did agree to b go to ER. Called an ambulance. He was admitted to the hospital. He ended up dying. Dr. says it was the worst infection he had ever seen. Can't help but wonder if he had gone the day before, could he still be here.

CatNoBag · 14/05/2023 17:41

I hope your husband is on the mend, but just a heads up - I had similar symptoms with a UTI that refused to go away and it turned out one of my kidneys was slowly dying. I wouldn't have noticed a thing (the other kidney was picking up the slack) without the UTIs, but I was the exact same with cold fevers and usual antibiotics making me feel better initially but then back to feeling awful. He's unlikely to be the same cause as me (female/male anatomy!), but if he continues to feel awful I'd say it's worth trying to get his kidneys checked if you can.

@TR888
You mentioned partner is going for a “prostate test” next week - I assume a blood test?
There should be an interval of 6 weeks between a UTI clearing and testing PSA, as the UTI can cause high PSA readings and unnecessary investigation.

A urine infection – You may have a test for a urine infection as this can raise your PSA level. If you have an infection, you'll be given treatment for this. You'll need to wait until the infection has gone – around six weeks – before you have a PSA test.” - https://prostatecanceruk.org/prostate-information-and-support/prostate-tests/psa-blood-test#:~:text=A%20urine%20infection%20–%20You%20may,you%20have%20a%20PSA%20test.

Zeborah · 14/05/2023 18:27

Has he had COVID? as I read recently of a link between COVID & reoccurring UTIs that do not clear with anti biotics

Irisheyesareshining · 14/05/2023 18:48

Don’t mess around AE immediately. I know a few people who have had sepsis, it’s very serious.

Irisheyesareshining · 14/05/2023 18:49

Sorry didn’t read the update , hope he gets better soon !

ednakenneth · 14/05/2023 18:51

It sounds like he has prostatitis. My husband has had it twice. It's extremely painful and take several months to cure. The medication they give doesn't allow alcohol . My husband was in the medication for about 3 months. He did have a prostate examination which is very unpleasant. There are no known causes except stress. Don't worry too much.
My husband did say lots of men do refuse the examination and he did see lots of men walk out the hospital crying.
He was in extreme pain and he did look dreadful. He could barely walk. He's fine now and it's never returned. Fingers crossed. Drink loads of water and green tea.

Mandyjack · 14/05/2023 19:08

Sounds like sepsis to me or kidney infection he needs A&E. You should've rung 111

Mandyjack · 14/05/2023 19:11

TR888 · 13/05/2023 11:18

Good tips re phoning an ambulance (if this was to happen again) and let the medics do the talking, rather than try to convince him. Why is he like this? When he's been very poorly before, he was also digging his feet in and minimising the issues to everyone.

You dont need to call an ambulance he could've spoke to NHS 111 who give medical advice & can instruct you to go to A&E

justasking111 · 14/05/2023 19:16

HE WAS AT A&E YESTERDAY!!!

Jobear2797 · 14/05/2023 19:18

If you find he gets bad again he may need his bladder scraped, it’s more unusual for men to get urine infections and when they do they can get very poorly. My DH had repeated infections but after having his bladder basically cleaned out he has been as right as rain, it’s a very simple procedure and he was only in hospital for one night. I hope your DH continues to go from strength to strength, but just in case I thought I’d add my OH experience.
