Any medics out there? I'm worried about my husband

He's 50. Had a urine infection with quite a lot of blood in Uribe about 12 days ago. Got antibiotics and the infection resolved, only to come back a three days later: very I'll this time, unable to leave bed even for the toilet. Passing urine ok although with less flow.

New antibiotics, seemed to be working and yesterday went out of the house and ate normally. but awful, awful shivering fits the night before and again last night, then profuse sweating. He's up now but we both sense something is very wrong.

He's under GP care and has some prostate test on Wednesday. I'm worried this could be sepsis or some form of organ failure. I think it's time for hospital but he's reluctant.

Just go to A&E.

It may be sepsis, which can be life threatening.

Better to be wrong than waste time waiting.

DrStrawberry · 13/05/2023 09:39

I'm a doctor. It's Saturday, go to A&E to get checked out. He's already failed one antibiotic course, now not getting better after second course.

TR888 · 13/05/2023 09:41

Thanks, I've just talked him into it. He still wants to have half an hour at home first (I've no idea why) but we'll go after.

I had this when I had a horrible kidney infection. It is rigours and indicates a serious infection. I also got it after a failed course of antibiotics (infection was a nasty resistant strain - common these days). My pulse was over 140bpm when I went to the walk in centre ...and I had no idea. They didn't admit me as my blood pressure was good (I was a fit 21 year old), but I was sent away with strong oral antibiotics and told any signs of it getting worse, then straight to A&E. These days I would be straight to A&E as they would give me IV antibiotics and knock it on the head. Orals antibiotics were slow to kick in and I spent a lot of time in horrible pain and drenched in sweat.

I would go to A&E. They won't blink an eye, especially if you mention rigours, failed course of antibiotics and worries of sepsis.

he is too ill to be making decisions so you will have to do it for him. I know it’s upsetting but just call an ambulance and hand the care over to them, this isn’t something that will get better at home. Good luck.

I would shout at him at this point!

This is what my DH had to do for me once, when you are ill you can't make good decisions as you shut down.

Gettingbysomehow · 13/05/2023 09:44

definitely sounds like sepsis he needs to be blue lighted in now!!! i see sepsis everyday at work.

I'm glad he's agreed to go. I was going to suggest if he utterly wouldn't go without calling a GP super drug have a private GP helpline 24/7 costs about £40

I mean it would be a bit daft for him to pay 40 for someone to tell him something you already know, but if it was needed the option was there.

But well done for getting him to agree to go.

Your lack of urgency is astonishing given everything people are saying on here.

AnnaMagnani · 13/05/2023 09:46

He's too ill to make sensible decisions. If he can't get in a car you phone an ambulance.

Dymaxion · 13/05/2023 09:48

Glad that he is starting to see sense, better a couple of nights in hospital getting on top of the infection, than a couple of weeks if he tips into sepsis and whatever long term damage that might leave him with.

WeightInLine · 13/05/2023 09:48

Bloody hell. Just go.

Nicknamesforviolet · 13/05/2023 09:49

Get him in the car and when you get to a and e say you think it is sepsis. It will get you on the right pathway quicker. Best of luck x

saraclara · 13/05/2023 09:49

Tell him that you're calling 111 for advice. 111 will tell the hospital that you're coming, and that might help with the speed at which he's seen.

3luckystars · 13/05/2023 09:49

Just say ‘we are not waiting any longer, get in the car now or I’m calling an ambulance’ and when you get to the hospital, you will have to be like this too as he might want to go home. Sorry you are dealing with this, but it’s ok to be pushy today.

ChickenRat · 13/05/2023 09:52

I concur with @3luckystars he really needs to go NOW

I'm so sorry this is happening, will be thinking of you and hoping for a quick recovery

Muddydogpawprints · 13/05/2023 09:52

If it is sepsis, or any infection, he needs to go now. You know this. Having had sepsis myself and my husband has had severe infection affecting his spinal column I can assure you that you need to be making the decision and taking him now, your husband is not making sensible decisions due to the infection.

bloodywhitecat · 13/05/2023 09:53

Given the current state of the ambulance service he probably won't get there any quicker if you do call an ambulance but I would certainly threaten to do it. Good luck OP, I know how difficult your situation is as I have been there. I don't know why some people think you can force a full grown adult into the car and into hospital against their wishes.

Undethetree · 13/05/2023 09:57

Do you have kids? Guilt trip him in any way you can to get in the car. Get a neighbour round to help him out of bed. Of course he doesn't want to go, he feels like shit, he wants to stay in bed. But he doesn't have a choice in this, he is not able to be rationale.

Good luck.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 13/05/2023 09:59

Please go to hospital. My husband unknowingly had an anal abscess which caused sepsis, he went into septic shock just before surgery and almost died.

His illness started with what he thought was a tummy bug. Then he had hot and cold sweats and uncontrollable shaking, to the point he couldn't hold a cup. This the went away after a day. And he also kept feeling like he was better, only to be worse again the next day. Look for signs of delirium and slurred speech, which is a sign of very low BP. . If we had known sepsis symptoms we would have been treated days earlier.

Can you check his BP? My husbands went down to 75/45 at one point just before surgery.

Wishing you both all the best. Trust your instincts and please get proper medical advice.

ADHDDDDDDDBOOM · 13/05/2023 10:00

Men can be a real bugger to get to go to the hospital can't they?
Did they send off his urine to test or did they just dip test it?

Terven · 13/05/2023 10:03

I had exactly what he’s got with the shivering and antibiotics not working and went undiagnosed after two A&E appointments. The third time it became an emergency. I’m the beginning I had no fever but later had over 40C.
I had a kidney infection and I spent three weeks in hospital being given IV antibiotics. Because the delay in diagnose I had recurring problems for years after this.I

mickeymight · 13/05/2023 10:12

I know about these infections, I am currently on Nitrofurantoin
Usually they kill the infection, but occasionally not. Then I need another antibiotic (oral).
Shiver and shuddering I recognise, Thursday I think it was.
PM me if you/he wants to.

RabbitRabbitRabbitHouse · 13/05/2023 10:13

Hope you are on your way to A&E now? If you'd have called 111 they would have probably sent an ambulance straight away.
