Any medics out there? I'm worried about my husband

He's 50. Had a urine infection with quite a lot of blood in Uribe about 12 days ago. Got antibiotics and the infection resolved, only to come back a three days later: very I'll this time, unable to leave bed even for the toilet. Passing urine ok although with less flow.

New antibiotics, seemed to be working and yesterday went out of the house and ate normally. but awful, awful shivering fits the night before and again last night, then profuse sweating. He's up now but we both sense something is very wrong.

He's under GP care and has some prostate test on Wednesday. I'm worried this could be sepsis or some form of organ failure. I think it's time for hospital but he's reluctant.

If you can find someone to look after the children do go back and speak to someone.

PostItInABook · 13/05/2023 11:46

Paramedic here. Go to A&E straight away. No faffing about. I’d be blue lighting him in if I was there in a professional capacity.

PriamFarrl · 13/05/2023 11:56

Glad you convinced him in the end. Hope all goes well.

My dad had something similar. Just a Uti. but after a few days didn't remember most of our names ( family) and was just completely inappropriate in his behaviour and language. Was fine after about a week in hospital. Hope everything is ok.

shiksappeal · 13/05/2023 11:57

My daughter once had a urine infection, seemed to resolve with antibiotics, came back, was on different antibiotics. Then she got unwell again and I spoke with my cousin who is a nephrologist and he said straight to A & E. Took her there and it was totally the right thing - she was admitted for a few days and put on IV antibiotics. This seems like a similar pattern. I'd definitely go - he could end up damaging his kidneys.

CheshireCat1 · 13/05/2023 11:58

Try not to worry, he’s now in the right place and they’ll sort him out at the hospital. Hopefully he’ll have a speedy recovery.

weightymatters73 · 13/05/2023 12:03

Glad he's gone to hospital, my dad had an intermittent fever with sepsis.

So glad he went, OP.

God knows why men are so reluctant to see doctors when they're ill.

No clue. But no wonder we live longer.

Mine injured his ribs and shoulder. But his friend, who is a combat medic, apparently pat him down and explained that it wasn't anything grievous.

Which was good to know. But he barely slept the last 3 weeks because putting any pressure on it hurt so much. And seeing an actual doctor (or taking anything like OTC painkillers)? Nope. No chance. He's just not the "type that frequently goes to the doctor".

Whatever that means...

Tigofigo · 13/05/2023 12:03

Scary that he was well enough to be normal yesterday, well done on getting him in

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 13/05/2023 12:05

@TR888

I'm super glad he went to the hospital. I hope everything is alright! (No clue why they're so stupid when it comes to their own health. Stubborn mules 🙄)

CiaoBellisima · 13/05/2023 12:11

Another vote for urosepsis here. Glad he’s being seen now. Expect that he may be kept in, pack a bag to drop off for him, just in case.

TR888 · 13/05/2023 12:14

To those who know, what are the tests to diagnose sepsis? Can you kniw from a blood test?

OP posts:
Whatonearthisgoingonnnn · 13/05/2023 12:14

Sepsis very potentially. I had very very similar symptoms with what was just a bit of a cough. Very scary. Thankfully the antibiotics worked but it was a case of ‘if no improvement in 24 hours then had to go directly to hospital for admission’

Whatonearthisgoingonnnn · 13/05/2023 12:15

Just seen an update that you have got him to be seen - well done OP. Hope he is better soon!

tulips27 · 13/05/2023 12:16

Everyone's jumping to sepsis but it could also be a kidney infection.

CiaoBellisima · 13/05/2023 12:17

Blood cultures, urine sample (in his case), blood tests and his presenting symptoms.

Thanks, I've just talked him into it. He still wants to have half an hour at home first (I've no idea why) but we'll go after”

Confusion/not thinking straight is another symptom of sepsis.

BadNomad · 13/05/2023 12:19

They'll check his bloods (CRP, white blood cells etc) and do a urine test. They'll know from that if he'll require IV antibiotics. If they suspect sepsis, they'll start treatment right away while they do tests. There is a pathway they'll follow.

tulips27 · 13/05/2023 12:19

Confusion/not thinking straight is another symptom of sepsis.

Can also be a symptom of a bad kidney infection, though.

TR888 · 13/05/2023 12:20

So, he tells me he's seen a GP and says it's nothing alarming. He's having a blood test and then he might be put on different antibiotics.

OP posts:
CheshireCat1 · 13/05/2023 12:20

They’ll probably also check his prostate, urinalysis and may do an abdominal scan.

TR888 · 13/05/2023 12:21

A GP in A&E, not at a GP practice

OP posts:
Willmafrockfit · 13/05/2023 12:24

that's good op

Bubblyb00b · 13/05/2023 12:30

How is your husband OP? I hope he is getting sorted. Men are the worst when ill! Either dying from a simple cold or saying "there is nothing wrong with me" when literally falling apart...

Bubblyb00b · 13/05/2023 12:31

ah, just seen an update! great. ))
