Shops don't give a shit about the coronation, do they?

In Sainsbos today, doing some food shopping but at the same time, thought I would pick up a few coronation souvenirs for my DD to show her grandchildren, etc. Just a cup, teatowel, that sort of thing.
There was just a tiny part of one wall with some bunting, a few t shirts and tablecloths and that was pretty much it.
My earliest royal memory was Charles and Di's wedding and the memorabilia available for that was off the charts. I was especially fond of my Royal Wedding Rubix Cube.
Now I wouldn't call myself a fervent royalist (but I am a bit of one and do follow them) - however, just in terms of the historical significance, it appears that nobody gives a shit?
I appreciate I haven't been into town as I live rurally, so you might all tell me that the shops there are full of the stuff. I just imagined that the supermarkets might have a few things too. (Just for posterity, you understand, not bothered if I have a Charles mug).

14 million people living in the uk are in poverty. Needing to use food banks, unable to afford rental properties, unable to properly heat their homes, the NHS is ruined, teachers are striking due to unlivable pay.

The coronation is a disgusting display.

See above 👌

WheelsUp · 02/05/2023 18:15

Most people don't care ime so the shops have got it right by not stocking much merch.

Not what I’m seeing at all. Maybe it depends where you live?

FionnulaTheCooler · 02/05/2023 18:15

I was in Asda the other day and it was full of Coronation tat, teddy bears, garden gnomes and union jack themed clothing. None of it came home with me.

gallina · 02/05/2023 18:16

It's because a lot of people no longer give a shit, myself included.

LlynTegid · 02/05/2023 18:16

Perhaps many shops do not see it as drumming up much business, except things such as cake and alcohol.

frozendaisy · 02/05/2023 18:17

Perhaps the palace has gone a bit superstitious Charles and Di mugs were all well and good but look what happened!

MudLady · 02/05/2023 18:17

Only the stuff they can sell. I haven't seen any shops that have bothered decorating or anything. Wonder why...

Mummyme87 · 02/05/2023 18:17

Honestly couldn’t give a shit. Whilst yes it’s a historical event they country is in ruins, there’s no money etc etc yet we have how many billions to spend on this… yeah, it’s a no from me

This.

Donate to a food bank 'in their names' if you want to mark it in a helpful way

Aldi have some stuff in near me, I got the tackiest mug, it’s brilliant and I’m excited to drink pimms from it on Saturday at the street party!

TeenDivided · 02/05/2023 18:19

Our market town and neighbouring villages all have decorations up.
I have seen the usual bunting etc for sale.
I think it is hard to get extra excited so soon after the jubilee.

QuickGuide · 02/05/2023 18:20

I'm not sure the supermarkets were the place to go for Charles and Di mugs? There plenty of it about.

Arginalia · 02/05/2023 18:20

Yes, and the fading unsold remnants were still lingering in bargain basements by the time of the next Royal Wedding in 1986.

Kyse · 02/05/2023 18:21

I don't think many people have remembered it TBH
I've spent the past few weeks going "no closed that day"
Customer "why?"
"Coronation"
Customer "oh yeahhhhh of course"

DrMarciaFieldstone · 02/05/2023 18:21

There’s plenty of tat in our local M&S.

I don’t mind the royals but I have zero interest in the coronation. But they must think someone wants a Coronation Colin Caterpillar cake

I swear my mum's still got a Charles and Di mug. Perhaps I'll sellotape a picture of Camilla over Diana, save me buying a new one.

beeskipa · 02/05/2023 18:22

You're right, I don't think many people (or businesses) care all that much.

The only people I know who care(d) enough about the royals to buy royal-related memorabilia is my mum and my grandmas. Both grandmas are dead and my mum is barely scraping by and certainly doesn't have money for commemorative teatowels or whatever - I don't think there's a huge market for it, really! I don't know anyone my age (early 30s) who'd buy that kind of thing.

I'm planning on getting one cheap after the coronation just because I like them

BluebellBlueballs · 02/05/2023 18:24

I just don't think the monarchy will be the same again after QE died. The jubilee was much much bigger than this.

Arginalia · 02/05/2023 18:24

It was actually possible to buy a 'Royal Wedding mug conversion' kit on eBay at the time of Charles and Camilla's wedding.

The shop i work in has plenty stuff.
Only half of Glasgow are interested in it. And they are eedgits.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 02/05/2023 18:27

The Guardian are running a very interesting mini series of Podcasts about the secrecy surrounding the Royal wealth at the moment. Quite the eye opener.
