What minor laws would you introduce?

lighthearted

If you were put in charge of Everything for a few weeks, what minor laws would you introduce? I'm thinking things that would be really easy to implement, and would make people's lives easier.

I would make it the law that manufacturers of electronic devices had to indicate on the outside of the product which batteries it needs (type and how many). I'm fed up of having to take the battery cover off, check what's in there, and then either put the cover back on (fiddling with a tiny screwdriver), or leave it off somewhere (to inevitably lose it) until I can get new batteries for the thing.

While they're at it, they can make the cover permanently attached to the device so it doesn't get lost. But not attached in a way that makes it impossible to reach the batteries.

I think I'd just want some of the ones we have enforced fairly.

Legal protection from sexism. Children protected. Right to free speech. First do no harm- is that law or oath?

Sulusu · 02/05/2023 21:08

No parking on pavements, fines for everyone that does.

Stricter dog laws especially around breeding of unhealthy flat faced dogs.

Ban private jets for celebs/super rich.

Tax big cars more, not just for emissions, but also for carbon footprint involved in manufacture, and weight that damages our road structure.

Staggersaurus · 02/05/2023 21:14

Smart phones and social media made illegal for under 18s. If caught the punishment falls on the parents who lose their own access to social media for a year.

All dog poo bags to be clearly stamped with the dog owners address and for it to be a mandatory duty for any found to be stuffed through the letterbox of said address.

Needapadlockonmyfridge · 02/05/2023 21:14

Do you think we have time to launch The Mumsnet Party in time for the next General Election?

Our manifesto would be excellent!!!

Jewelanemone · 02/05/2023 21:28

Compulsory consumption of Brussels sprouts on Christmas Day. Even if it's just one.

SilentHedges · 02/05/2023 21:43

Pet shops to be banned. Pet trade to be banned. Animals available from rescues only, or very tightly regulated and monitored breeders. No advertising of animals on any websites. Licenses required for pet ownership.

All sub substandard, cruel, pet housing to be banned, like rabbit and guinea pig hutches (I.e. prison), tiny cages etc. To be replaced with proper sized housing.

RedHeadsUnite · 02/05/2023 21:43

Compulsory 'hedgehog highways' in all gardens.

Grey squirrels exterminated (and made into pies)

Red squirrels reintroduced to all counties.

Dog off leads (unless in designated areas) anaesthetised.

Not sure what to do with cats yet 🤔

Massive subsidies for planting native, managed trees everywhere.

Humans have to take a strict test before being allowed to reproduce - with refreshers every year. Or being able to own a car, a pet or an outfit from Primark.

Government much more strictly monitored by the hoi polloi.

Plastics fazed out by 2025.

Putin exterminated. Wars banned.

Cadbury to be given back to British and recent recipes scrapped.

Doctor's instructed to ditch minor medication in favour of compulsory nature walks.

No bullying allowed.

Much harsher prison sentences for infringements of all of the above - and much more too...

All well trained dogs to be allowed to go everywhere.
All people with badly trained dogs to be be banned from dog ownership.
All people that think dogs should always be on leads to be kept on a lead.

Limit on number of children people can have.
no children in restaurants and child free carriages on trains.

Bloody hell! You sound nice.

I agree with all the tighter dog laws. I think if we had dog-parks that dog owners had to pay for/dog licences it would encourage a much more responsible type of dog owner and put an end to irresponsible overbreeding of puppies.

Booklover40 · 02/05/2023 21:57

Oh, and definitely no men in womens sports 👏

CombatBarbie · 02/05/2023 21:57

That I can bill the farmer for all the plants his ewes and lambs are continually eating in my garden because they keep breaking out of the field

Rant46892 · 02/05/2023 22:05

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 02/05/2023 22:06

Mostar · 02/05/2023 22:11

There should be a fine for sending email with "Sent from my iPhone " at the bottom. Yeah, so you own a fucking iPhone. Get over yourself.

Likewise doing a Reply to All that just says "OK!" or "Me too!!!" with a smiley face emoji. Fixed penalty, £100.

BounceyB · 02/05/2023 22:16

The statutory annual leave to be increased to 4 weeks a year and for it to fully paid annual leave for everyone unless self employed. I just remember my first job being statutory holidays only and if was so hard to manage.

LotsOfBalloons · 02/05/2023 22:27

Isn't there r weeks statutory paid holiday leave already?!

LotsOfBalloons · 02/05/2023 22:30

It's is! 5.6 weeks including bank holidays.

What minor laws would you introduce?

Singing along to music in someone else’s company subject to a fine unless you are a professional singer. Double the fine if you are my mother.

If you are a house builder and your houses have such little insulation inside that I can hear everyone peeing even 2 floors up, you shall be hung, drawn and quartered.

85% of houses built on green spaces can only be sold to local people, so there is local benefit for the harm done to the local environment.

All half-empty town centres to be flattened and council houses (town houses with small gardens acceptable), good sized flats, small parks and play areas and a smaller sized shopping area to be built.

CoffeeYes · 03/05/2023 01:45

I don’t agree with dog licensing, but I think American Bulldogs should be a banned breed. Too many have killed or seriously maimed people in recent years. Maybe it could be based on characteristics and weight. Tricky to enforce though because even though Pitbulls are banned, many owners just call them ‘Staffies’ to get away with it.

Minister of education or health should have to spend at least 6 months working full time as a teacher or TA in a large state school or as a nurse or health support worker in an NHS hospital (not private).

More affordable 2-3 bed houses rather than huge houses being built.

Watching music/videos on your phone on public transport without using earphones should be banned. Even if it’s a toddler - find something else to distract them with.

coxesorangepippin · 03/05/2023 01:49

No pyjamas in public

Headsets at all times on devices, no music must be heard

Indicators used at all necessary times when driving

Women's health centers built that are for women only, and appointments via walk in. Open to all women

Clementineorsatsuma · 03/05/2023 02:12

@Partyandbullshit only likes wealthy people then?

You.... you do know that it's automatic, don't you...? That the author doesn't type that out?

QueenBitch666 · 03/05/2023 02:31

On the spot fines for spitting and littering

QueenBitch666 · 03/05/2023 02:36
