Good when I was a kid, a bit crap in recent years, awful now.

What other foods have turned to rubbish?

Too much palm oil in chocolate makes it all taste like whale semen and leaves a margarine coating on my teeth. It’s terrible what’s been done to chocolate.

That said, Lindt and Aldi own brand still get a pass. Tony’s is less greasy but still tasteless. Nestle choc doesn’t even look attractive these days - it’s like they’ve given up!

I bought one and thought it tasted awful. I had a milk one, dontou recommended any of the others?

The sea salt and caramel one is gorgeous, and the choc chip cookie one 😁

Gatekeeper · 25/04/2023 16:32

Twiglets are a sad, pale version of themselves. They reduced the salt and took out the cheese powder. That fab unami taste is gone forever. Bastards!

Ribena.

This!!!

choochooandspook · 25/04/2023 16:32

Cadbury milk tray

TerfIngOnTheBeach · 25/04/2023 16:33

Tony's Chocoloney is the food of the devil, it's not good chocolate at all and not worth the price.

I'm still partial to a Cadburys Dairy Milk in the bar form, but if I'm treating myself at the supermarket it would be a small box of Lily O'Briens when on special offer or a bar of Lindor.

givemecoffeenow · 25/04/2023 16:33

Easter eggs were also really shit this year. And too expensive (and smaller) I normally buy a lot, this year just got one each for the children in the family.

I bet their profits this year were crap for easter eggs. Everyone I have spoken to has done the same.

Ribena.

I second you on ribena. What on earth did they do to it?

You see, I love Flakes. But they're so messy to eat and they're tiny now!

I've always called a Twirl a 'Safety Flake'. You can even eat them when driving.

Whoiscomingtosaveyou · 25/04/2023 16:39

Aldi Moser Roth chocolate has no palm oil and is extremely tasty.

MeinKraft · 25/04/2023 15:59

Tony's Chocolonely tastes like Kinnertons advent calendar chocolate to me. Lily O'Briens is delicious.

Yes! it’s like cheap chocolate.
We all think it’s like the cheap hollow Christmas tree chocolates you get so it’s very like the cheap advent cal chocs too.

Favouritefruits · 25/04/2023 16:41

Tizer, was immense in the 90s turned rubbish in the 00s and beyond….

Twiglets1 · 25/04/2023 16:41

KnickerlessParsons · 25/04/2023 15:08

Also, Twiglets. Do they actually put any marmite on them?

Twiglets have gone downhill, have to agree.

MarpleFan · 25/04/2023 16:41

Butterscotch Angel Delight - manna from heaven as a child, absolutely revolting now.

ReadersD1gest · 25/04/2023 16:43

Baileys. Used to be really thick and gloopy, now the texture's like water.

userlotsanumbers · 25/04/2023 16:43

Cadburys killed their chocolate a few years back, but I notice that Nestle are at it too recently. Good for my ever expanding arse, not so good for my stock of guilty pleasures. I am just not eating it like I used to, it's cost engineered to hell.

whatalovelydayontheintergoodlord · 25/04/2023 16:44

Aldi chocolate is generally good.

One thing I've noticed that's changed recently is basic porridge oats. Bought some from aldi and had to cook them for twice as long to get them to go soft, and even then they were still a bit more chewy, and my youngest rejected their porridge saying it was 'gusting!

So went and got some from tesco instead, and they were the same!

A lot of Aldi chocolate has no palm oil. Most of the Dairyfine and Choceur bars are palm oil free. Not the toffee crisp knock off though. The hazelnut Choceur bar is delicious and very cheap for decent chocolate. Though the nicest chocolate I've had in years was a Divine chocolate bar I picked up on offer in B&M. It was sooooo chocolatey.

Full fat Dr Pepper. It no longer tastes like how I remember it did in the 80's

Tony's Chocoloney is the way to go. It's really expensive, I only get it when it's on offer - but my god, it's worth it.

I just don't get the hype on Tony's, but appreciate that I must be missing something given their popularity

They replaced half the sugar with sweeteners. I used to love it, but it's gross now

OhSmitty · 25/04/2023 16:47

Used to love twiglets, can't touch them now.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 25/04/2023 16:47

I think Tony's chocolate is perfectly acceptable but it's not amazing

Tarkan · 25/04/2023 16:47

Anything that's had sweeteners added to it since sweeteners give me terrible headaches, so basically every soft drink I enjoyed apart from Coke. I have to buy expensive imported ones if I want a choice now. Thanks to a recent MN thread I've found M&S lemonade without sweeteners and only 95p for a 1 litre bottle compared to the £2 or thereabouts for Fever Tree's 750ml.

I'm so glad someone mentioned cheese too. We've always just been fine with the basic cheese from any supermarket or even our local convenience store but I've been saying to DH for a while the texture was different. It's harder but not in a good way, it's like it's extra rubbery but hard rubbery instead of the soft rubbery cheap cheese you used to get back in the day.

We had the Farmfoods Red Leicester in the house the other day and I made a quesadilla with it and the amount of oil that came dripping out of the cheese made my quesadilla soggy. It never used to do that.

I used to enjoy Mullerlights too, they had a small amount of sweetener but not enough to affect me. Then they changed the recipe, the yogurts are thicker so I hate the texture but they've also got more sweetener in them now so I can't have them any more.

Chimneypotblues · 25/04/2023 16:48

Nearly everything's been switched to palm oil and sweeteners, it's horrible! Biscuits and pastry are mostly all palm oil filled rubbish now. It's not the same at all.
