Good when I was a kid, a bit crap in recent years, awful now.

What other foods have turned to rubbish?

British choc tastes different from ours in Australia. Must have different sugar or something. I prefer ours, have to say. Cadburys has gone off a bit but ALDIs is not bad and also Lindt balls.

DinosApple · 26/04/2023 07:50

Yes! Fruit and vegetables!

When I was a child (80s kid) supermarket fruit and veg actually had flavour. Peaches were a huge treat and were sweet, and only sold in season. Same with plums and strawberries. Tomatoes were not watery like they are now.

Now you can buy them most of the year but the flavour is not there. Fruit is watery, nowhere near as sweet and very disappointing.

It's not my aging taste buds. It's the way they are grown for mass production and year round eating.

We grow our own tomatoes and in season, home grown taste just like they should. But they're only available July and August.
We have some fruit trees in pots, they're only small, the fruit is delicious though.

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 26/04/2023 07:56

We stopped eating Walkers crisps when they changed from using sunflower oil to a blend of sunflower and rapeseed - now they taste burnt. I wonder if Twiglets taste different for the same reason? Our Asda sells Tayto crisps, I'll need to check the ingredients in those. Frazzles have definitely gone puffier.

And everything has lost 'flavour ". It's not my age, it's because they keep lowering the salt content. I know crisps are salty, that's why I buy them - stop policing my food shopping!

ConfusedGin · 26/04/2023 08:05

Capri Sun.

I only liked the orange, but they changed the recipe to replace the small amount of cherry flavour to be lemon.

TheApplianceofScience · 26/04/2023 08:07

The only chocolate I will eat comes from Waitrose or Hotel chocolat, I have a square of chocolate with a cup of coffee every morning and this is swapped out for a champagne truffle which I get for high days and holidays.

Just checked neither have palm oil.

13Bastards · 26/04/2023 08:10

Every bloody fizzy drink coming in zero options only. I'm an adult and if I want a tin of pop loaded with sugar, I should be allowed to buy one.

See also- squash.

SoCunningYouCanStickATailOnItAndCallItAFox · 26/04/2023 08:18

Seabrook spring onion flavour crinkle cut crisps.
Oh man those tasted good in the 90's. 😋
Used to occasionally buy a packet in hope, but now my hope is dead. 😭

What's newsagent chocolate? It sounds like your local paper shop is making its own chocolate bars round the back. Which would be weird.

It's probably just donkeys years old... A corner shop near me sells stuff that you can't get in the supermarkets, because they've been discontinued 😂

I posted about Rolos earlier in the thread. They are really horrible now. My local shop sells them and Home Bargains does too.

Oh yes. Rolos used to be my absolute favourite as a kid. My dad would buy me a pack on a Sunday morning after mass. Now they taste so cheap and nasty.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 26/04/2023 11:05

No! Not Rolos!

https://www.her.ie/life/gallery-cadbury-through-the-years-how-the-dairy-milk-wrapper-has-evolved-34508
This shows Dairy milk having vegetable fats as far back as the 1970s when they first started listing the ingredients and it has always been low in cocoa solids just like it is now.

Away with your gaslighting. Dairy milk used to have a lovely texture that melted in the mouth, now it just sits like a lump of candle on your tongue. Agree with a PP that Dark Milk is the only Cadbury chocolate worth the calories these days.

Ritter Sport honeyed almond chocolate is the tits.

I'm loving this recommendation Grin Very ... succinct.

Did they not always taste like that?

I don’t really eat much chocolate. Waitrose is ok, Hotel Chocolat is ok but not great.

If I want chocolate I have Anton Berg marzipan or Leonidas.

God, no. They used to practically glue your teeth together, they were so toffee like! Now they're just slime.

Buddug · 26/04/2023 17:54

Cheeselets, used to love those nibbles at Christmas, they just don’t taste as nice anymore.

pensionconfusion · 26/04/2023 17:54

FlamingoQueen · 25/04/2023 15:42

Salt and vinegar Pringles - used to love them, now seem to make my lips go white! Can’t eat them.

Agree with you. Lips felt burnt afterwards.

AutumnCrow · 26/04/2023 18:02

Last Christmas involved a disappointing tub of Roses, a disappointing tube of S&V Pringles, some disappointing boxes of liquorice allsorts and sports mixtures, and some bloody awful smoked salmon and custard donuts from Sainsbury's own range.

Proust's madeleine cakes it was not.

Mirabai · 26/04/2023 18:05

I don’t remember newsagent chocolate ever being nice. So I can’t tell if it’s changed.

But I do wonder the general sense that it’s got worse is partly that everyone is used to better quality chocolate now so Cadbury’s etc tastes worse in comparison.

KnickerlessParsons · 25/04/2023 15:07

Kit Kat's lost me when they stopped wrapping them in foil.

Most chocolate is crap these days IMO - up until a couple of years ago, I'd do pretty much anything for a bar of chocolate and probably had a bar of chocolate every day. These days I very rarely buy it.

Yes, most chocolate is rubbishnow. I've got very plebeian tastes, none of your dark chocolate for me, I like good quality milk choc. But nobody seems to sell it now.

Yes, it tastes completely different and doesn't melt properly. It also seems to be really sickly sweet.

Of course it's different. If you ever get your hands on some Irish Cadbury's - they sell it in Morrisons sometimes, you'll see the difference.
Chocolate as it used to be.

I really miss decent tomatoes, they're often underripe in the supermarket and go from that to red mush so quickly. I'm not keen on cherry tomatoes as they're more sweet than tomato flavoured, but they are better than most.

Hoolihan · 26/04/2023 18:17

Lindt Extra Creamy is the bollocks, just in case no-ones mentioned it yet.

Was chatting to a woman on the bus today, about tasteless Tomatoes she had been to a green grocers and said they tastes no better, I had to agree they are all texture and no taste.
