Good when I was a kid, a bit crap in recent years, awful now.

What other foods have turned to rubbish?

Snickers. Used to have full on roasted peanuts and decent chocolate. Not the nuts are tiny bits and the chocolate is thin, in fact the whole thing has shrunk!
Milky way is now sickly over sweet goop in the middle.
I miss Tab clear, Cadbury Secret, and Refreshers.

Well they're not Marathon are they? Sad

Once, about 20 years ago, I had a Kit Kat chunky on a train, and they had somehow forgotten to include the biscuit part, so it was just solid chocolate all the way through. That was the best surprise ever, I still dream about that Kit Kat!
No real relevance to the thread, sorry 😊

I once had a Malteser that was entirely chocolate. Interesting, but not worth dreaming about.

Maynards wine gums also don’t taste how they used to. I used to love them.

There's no actual wine in them these days.

GetTheGoodLookingGuy · 25/04/2023 20:39

Coco pops. Now they've taken most of the sugar out, they just taste of nothing.

Pom bears, too - they took out most of the salt, and therefore most of the flavour.

Chocolate oranges taste like palm oil now. I'm already quite restricted in what chocolate I can eat due to nut allergies, so it's annoying when things I can actually eat just don't taste nice anymore.

And yes, what's the point of kitkats without foil?

Brokendaughter · 25/04/2023 20:41

The problem with the theory it's your taste buds changing as you get older, is that chocolate still made with the original ingredients & no palm oil/whatever other oil + random other sweeteners still tastes as good as ever.
Weren't Europeans trying to get the british 'chocolate' renamed Vegelate a few years back? They were right.

Same with biscuits. The ones made with ingredients you recognise from your own baking cupboard tasting as good as ever, but things like digestives sold in shops with 47 different chemical compounds listed in the ingredients taste nothing but nasty.

So, if it's age related & to do with sense of smell & taste, why does e.g. lemonade made with sugar & no sweeteners still taste good, but lemonade without tastes like something you'd only give to people you hate?

World Wide Words: Vegelate

Some topical thoughts on the word 'Vegelate'.

FancyFanny · 25/04/2023 20:44

Dairy milk really has not changed over the years. It's all hearsay- someone tells you it it's not as good now because it now contains vegetable fat and all of sudden in tastes 'greasy' to everyone. I think the shape change, with a rounded surface instead of chunks changes how it feels in your mouth initially, but it's always contained vegetable fat- at least in the living memory of all of us!

Sadly our taste buds also die off as we age which is one of the reasons things seemed to taste so much more vibrant when we were kids.

Bollocks it's all Jamie Oliver's fault

I wonder what food our younger generation will miss when they are older..

Red coke. It's the last bastion of fizzy drinks and they'll fuck with it before too long.

AddictedtoStarmix · 25/04/2023 20:53

Haribo Starmix!
As my user name alludes - used to love them, minimum of one large packet a day, thought diabetes the only intervention that would stop me consuming them.
Until.... Haribo changed the recipe to include 'real' fruit juice! Now they all taste the same, and that same is not good!
If I wanted fruit, I would eat an apple that tastes of apple.
I don't. I want lots of sugary goodness that tastes of synthetically enhanced fruitiness.
Agree with everyone else, that most chocolate bars taste of nothing and feel waxy, crisps aren't as flavoursome without the salt and cheese no longer melts the same.
I know things change and the negative changes mean my diet has improved. However, somehow I am heavier and fatter!
Think Greggs will need to change their brownie recipe to save me from myself!😂

Easterfunbun · 25/04/2023 21:01

crisps like like cheesy puffs and onion rings, bacon rashers…… no flavour these days.

The point about you being heavier and fatter…obesity is on the rise so maybe all this changing recipes for ‘our health’ is all a load of bollox! Things taste like crap and people aren’t losing weight.

Try the M & S cheesy puffs. They're fab (for now...)

Really? They taste the same to me- Giant Wotsits are simply the best cheese puffs ever!

*that wasn’t meant personally starmix!

Easterfunbun · 25/04/2023 21:03

@ReadersD1gest

Ill try the Marks ones.

I used to love Cadbury’s chocolate but now it tastes vile. Very oily and far too sweet.

Yankee candle no were near as strong as in the past

Mirabai · 25/04/2023 21:10

I’ve always hated Cadbury’s type chocolate - the only one I like are Rolos (Rowntrees) - but it’s hard to find them in London. What’s happened to them?
Can’t get them anywhere locally, can’t get them at Waterloo station etc.

Manzana · 25/04/2023 21:12

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 25/04/2023 19:10

Keep them in the freezer, the issue is largely a texture thing I think and eating them from the freezer makes nake crisp and crunchy again 😋

thank you for the tip, I’ll give it a go

You can get nestle rolos on Amazon. Not sure if they’re as nice though.

This shows Dairy milk having vegetable fats as far back as the 1970s when they first started listing the ingredients and it has always been low in cocoa solids just like it is now.

Yup , I came in here to say Pom bears and coco pops . I know coco pops were unhealthy but if you want a treat you want it to taste good . Even the chocolate milk left is so weak it doesn’t taste of anything .
