Good when I was a kid, a bit crap in recent years, awful now.

What other foods have turned to rubbish?

Lucozade should be called LOO-cozade because it tastes like fizzy piss.

So I've been told.

Most brands of muesli seem to have upped the raisin quantity of late. I now find myself having to pick out excess raisins for fear of dried-grape overload. Are they cheaper than the other ingredients? Is this a thing, or just my fevered imaginings?

The raisins are the best bit!

Yep this.

mini eggs used to be a huge pleasure. So did going to the shop and getting myself a can of coke, packet of crisps and a chocolate bar. Now I’m not bothered at all.

mondelez and their Americanisation of chocolate, replacing the cocoa butter with palm oil.

Mr Cadbury would be turning in his grave.

Ruined creme eggs. Absolutely ruined them.

I could weep.

Goodyetalso · 25/04/2023 18:44

Agree that Twirls, Flakes and Buttons still taste about right but all other Cadburys chocolate is now horrible. Freddos we’re still fine until very recently but they’ve changed the shape of them and it tastes like they’ve changed the chocolate at the same time. Fuming.

Also is it just me or is cheese just not the same anymore?

No it's not. Doesn't even melt properly for a toastie.

ALL soft/fizzy drinks have been ruined by sweeteners...

I blame that interfering bumh*le Jamie Oliver for that, the sanctimonious, meddling git.

Too much palm oil in chocolate makes it all taste like whale semen and leaves a margarine coating on my teeth. It’s terrible what’s been done to chocolate.

That said, Lindt and Aldi own brand still get a pass. Tony’s is less greasy but still tasteless. Nestle choc doesn’t even look attractive these days - it’s like they’ve given up!

How do you know what whale semen tastes like? 😂
Terrys chocolate orange.. the actual orange shaped ones.. the segments are shiny and the segments arent whole segments

IceCreamWithSprinkles · 25/04/2023 18:49

Once, about 20 years ago, I had a Kit Kat chunky on a train, and they had somehow forgotten to include the biscuit part, so it was just solid chocolate all the way through. That was the best surprise ever, I still dream about that Kit Kat!
No real relevance to the thread, sorry 😊

Yes to Ritz!!! I bought some today…was so looking forward to them. But bleuh…what have they done to them?

Try the Lidl fake Ritz. They taste like the originals used to.

ChunkyCheese · 25/04/2023 18:53

Terrys chocolate orange is the thing that disappoints me these days. I loved it when it was chunky and you had to hit it on the wall to break it away from the stem.
Also I’m sure Toblerone tastes different. I used to love that too, but don’t like it at all anymore.

fetchacloth · 25/04/2023 18:55

TUC biscuits. They break up too quickly when putting spread on.
Also they taste like cardboard - used to taste much better than they do now.

thislittlebird · 25/04/2023 18:57

McVities Digestives. Had to swap to M&S ones mid-lockdown after Mcvities changed them, they became claggy and pale, very odd. Saw a few people on twitter complaining too, tried a couple more times since then but they were still grim.

Did you know your sense of smell, which is highly linked to your ability to taste, deteriorates with age?

Smell and taste can also disappear after Covid, sometimes permanently.
Following covid, my sense of smell returned quite quickly but nearly two years on I still can't taste some things, or they taste different.

LilySavage · 25/04/2023 19:02

Haribo tangfastics. Some bright spark decided to make them with fruit not synthetic goopy stuff. Now I’m allergic to them. THANKS A LOT HARIBO…. Don’t put fruit where it doesn’t need to be!

The sea salt and caramel one is gorgeous, and the choc chip cookie one 😁

I quite liked the salted pretzel one, but Aldi do something very similar and it’s only £1.79 (I think) so you can get two instead of a Tony’s- it’s just as nice if not better.

Will never get over kitkats switching from foil and paper. My husband printed out the packaging last year, wrapped a four finger kit kat in foil and added the paper sleeve. It was the nicest thing ever and I enjoyed it so much more .

He sounds like a good 'un 😉

Malteasers, not malty, or chocolately, and turn into a wad of cardboard

Keep them in the freezer, the issue is largely a texture thing I think and eating them from the freezer makes nake crisp and crunchy again 😋

TwoMonthsOff · 25/04/2023 19:11

Most garlic baquettes are dead to me now….except to co op frozen ones. Hope they don’t change them 😥

This may be true, but I'm not having it as an explanation for shit ingredients. A good friend occasionally sends me beautiful chocolates from small fancy chocolatiers, and oh my God, they are still heavenly.

Dobbyatemysocks · 25/04/2023 19:12

There was a thread a few months ago about cheese and I think the reason it's gone funny is because they are using vegetable rennet instead of animal rennet.

But agree with all other comments about how crap all these 'new and improved' products now taste.

DahliaMacNamara · 25/04/2023 19:13

Vegetable rennet isn't a new thing, though. It's been around for decades, and still isn't in all cheeses.

Emmamoo89 · 25/04/2023 19:14

Kit kats taste the same to me. Especially kit kat chunkies

givemecoffeenow · 25/04/2023 15:30

That all depends on the cheese but it is expensive…..for an exceptional cheddar I suggest Westcombe, they sell it in marks and Spencer’s but it’s specially made for them I suspect, as it is pasteurised milk, but still fantastic. you can get the raw milk one by mail order, I’m not exaggerating it is utterly beautiful, if you feel like a treat

TwoMonthsOff · 25/04/2023 19:16

Cheese is all about the milk, not the rennet, and milk is all about the pasture

Uuugh agree I remember when they were short, and salty, they taste artificially sweet now and of nothing else.
