Who is spending £1.40 on a tin of Heinz baked beans?

Bloody hell - I haven't bought baked beans for ages and went to add them to weekly shop and couldn't believe the price of them. Ended up going for own brand (which I've had before and are fine). I'm sure Heinz must know what they're doing but their like baked beans for millionaires now!

(Lighthearted btw)

I don't think it is light hearted tbh. We can afford to spend £1.40 on a tin of baked beans, but I think it's really poor value so we've just stopped eating beans as much. Their loss.

Disclaimer - Heinz are gross I prefer Branston but am still not happy about spending £1 per tin they've gone up to!!

AspinallaSmythe · 24/04/2023 09:50

I’ve tried a lot of own brand since prices have shot up. My favourite is M&S own brand - 50p.

GreenDressy · 24/04/2023 09:50

Not me! M&S for 50p!

Yes, likewise, not that I can’t afford Heinz but it’s the principle.

Shekissedagirlandshelikedit · 24/04/2023 09:51

Yep M&S here too. They're lovely, as are their spaghetti hoops.

dietcokelime · 24/04/2023 09:52

Not unless they've got sausages in!! They're the best!

NoFall · 24/04/2023 09:52

I still buy them as they’re the only ones one of my children will eat. I buy the 6 pack of them and they work out much cheaper than that per tin.

h3ll0o · 24/04/2023 09:53

I’ve noticed more ads and sponsored pieces for Heinz TV, which does suggest their sales are plummeting.Their price increase has pushed our family to try cheaper brands.

Cadburyscreamegg · 24/04/2023 09:57

Heinz in general has gone upto ridiculous
Prices. The price of a bottle of ketchup or mayo now is shocking !!!

And don't get me started on Bisto gravy 🤣 £5 for a tub of gravy wta...

These brands think they are invincible and customers will still pay the high prices but I imagine people ain't.

Tentoseveninthemorning · 24/04/2023 09:58

M&S here too - taste fine to me.

I don't understand the Heinz price point if other own brands can under cut them by such a huge amount (although I admittedly have no idea how these things work).

I have also switched to m and s beans but I still buy Heinz ketchup.

Tentoseveninthemorning · 24/04/2023 09:58

Also toothpaste for £5! Always seems to be on half price offer but still.

Same people who are spending £1.50 on a packet of ginger nuts 🤯

BabychamGlass · 24/04/2023 10:00

I find Heinz beans too pale and watery, and hard!

Much prefer Branston

AspinallaSmythe · 24/04/2023 10:02

Yes, I bought hobnobs for work last week - £1.90. I don’t buy biscuits at home - shocked!

Although everything is cheaper if you buy 3 or 4 to get the deal. Time the government did something about that imo.

TheSnowyOwl · 24/04/2023 10:02

Sadly we are spending that much although they are cheaper if you buy in bulk. Autistic child, with a very restrictive diet, who can tell the difference between brands means there is no alternative for us.

Exactly the same situation here.

Yes, I've stopped buying a lot of fresh food because it'll go off if I get the deal, and I resent losing out because I'm single.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 24/04/2023 10:04

Heinz baked beans taste horrible because they use sweetener in them now, so I wouldn't buy them at any price. Branston are much better, but hard to find. My DC aren't really fans of baked beans, so it's an occasional thing for me anyway.

SprinkleRainbow · 24/04/2023 10:05

Beans are a big thing in our house and unbranded beans are one thing we've never scrimped on previously, £1.75 for a tin of Heinz beans in our local Co-op. My OH has decided spaghetti hoops are a compromise over that amount for 1 tin.
B&M is where I bulk buy beans as they are still a reasonable price for packs of 4 or 6.

Agreed. I like Heinz, but I don't like them enough to pay £1.40 a can, and I'm not encouraging this pricing madness by paying that much and supporting it.

Brrrrrrrrrrrr · 24/04/2023 10:11

M&S ones are 50p and far superior.

My question is who is spending £1.95 on a six pack of Walkers or £1.95 on a Heinz soup. Also does anyone ever buy Alpro nut milks full price?

Oh funny, I really can’t stand Branston.

I’m still buying Heinz beans but a lot less than I was and often on deal. Like you, it’s not that I actually can’t afford it but I don’t think that’s a good price for the product so I won’t do it.

Around the New Year I got those yearly roundup emails from the supermarket - the thing they do that copies Spotify - and there was one item that I was the top buyer for in the area (!) that I have, in recent months, stopped buying entirely. Again if I thought it was worth the new price I would buy it, but it isn’t so I don’t. It has made me think though, that they must notice? If the person who purchased x the most in the region has now stopped once the price went over a threshold, that must flag somewhere on their metrics. Same with the beans. It must be noticeable.

TheChosenTwo · 24/04/2023 10:14

I buy maybe a tin of beans once a month, they’re not really a favoured food here - 2 of us eat them on a jacket potato but we don’t have those much either.
So if they cost £1.20 that’s what I pay. How much did they used to be? £1.20 doesn’t seem that much?

TheChosenTwo · 24/04/2023 10:15

Sorry, you said £1.40 in your OP. Still doesn’t seem that much as a part of a main meal. 70p per person plus a potato, some butter, cheese and a bit of broccoli or whatever on the side.
