Who is spending £1.40 on a tin of Heinz baked beans?

Bloody hell - I haven't bought baked beans for ages and went to add them to weekly shop and couldn't believe the price of them. Ended up going for own brand (which I've had before and are fine). I'm sure Heinz must know what they're doing but their like baked beans for millionaires now!

(Lighthearted btw)

Is there anyone like me who tried the mid range brand and didn’t like them but got on well with the really cheap ones? Or have people not stooped that low yet? They’re seriously okay.

Chaiandkaafee · 25/04/2023 08:24

Please go to Costco! They sell a pack of 24 Heinz beans for around £18 inc VAT. It’s so much cheaper to buy bulk nowadays and top up the perishables weekly!

Chaiandkaafee · 25/04/2023 08:26

I’ve switched to own brand

dishwasher tablets
weetabix
biscuits

unless I get a good offer from Costco……..M&S also works out soooooo much better with price/taste ratio. It’s just their fruit can be expensive.

Is Costco available to everyone nowadays?

Some of the really cheap ones aren't significantly different to own brand. I've just seen a recommendation on one of these threads for Asda Smart Price beans (I think) being virtually identical to Branston, which is my preferred beans anyway (we've just got to the end of a multipack from Costco, so have been so far insulated from the price rises) so might try these.

I once compared supermarket own brand and value version of Corned beef and the value version nutritional value and ingredients were identical. I think a lot of it is that supermarkets know that many people want or need to buy value products, so that's what they offer. But other people won't buy them because they assume that they're inferior, so it's often most cost effective to them to sell the same product with different labels on for different markets.

oh no - I’m not sure. They have certainly expanded the criteria needed to apply for a card. Do take another look online……

LumpySpaceGoddess · 25/04/2023 08:32

The only Heinz products I buy are mayonnaise and ketchup but only when it’s on offer. We’ve always purchased own brand beans and soup for 50p (although it used to be cheaper than that)

60smusic · 25/04/2023 08:32

They're €1.90 for heinz beans here in Ireland 😲

TeapotElephant · 25/04/2023 08:32

The amount of sugar and salt in Heinz bb too! I get own brand, less crap and much cheaper

Nearly everyone. There's a very wide range of allowed professions as well as business owners. If you don't qualify yourself, you could always offer to split the cost of membership with a friend or relative who does qualify and take the second card (or I think you can get up to about 6 cards on one account but you have to pay extra for anything more than 2 cards).

Or if you don't qualify, there's definitely a lot of ways to save a lot on grocery shopping. @Chaiandkaafee's other tip about buying in bulk/only ever on offer for non perishables and just buying fresh stuff week to week is another good one.

There's so many things we only ever buy in offer and keep a stock in, so just don't buy at full price. And no, you don't need a massive house or lots of spare money to keep a few extra tins in. The space needed isn't much at all and it works out much cheaper over time to shop like this.

Yes to all of these! Asda dishwasher tables are £1!! And they do a great job. Weetabix - or wheat biscuits - cannot tell the difference except in the cost

Irequireausername · 25/04/2023 08:35

I don't, they're not really food so it's not worth it anymore. Same for ketchup.

I can justify buying expensive eggs etc because at least they're nutritious. What's the benefit when ketchup and beans are nutritionally terrible? I wouldn't spend 1.40 on instant noodles for instance.

If they want to hike prices then they've got to have nutritional value too.

LumpySpaceGoddess · 25/04/2023 08:37

I Laos don’t understand how people can afford to buy branded cereal! It’s so expensive!
Even own brand cereal has jumped up and my local supermarket still has bare shelves and massive stock issues.
My DD has autism and only eats a specific type of chicken burger, I used to buy them whenever the were offer at £2.50, they are now £5 and go on offer for £3.50
I feel like I’m constantly going from being angry to wanting to cry whenever I go shopping!

SOMumm · 25/04/2023 08:40

Asda beans, we like them, from faithfully buying Branston or Cross and Blackwell which are difficult to find now.
Asda 4x 410g beans now 1.70p this time last year on offer for £1 x 4. same as M&S. are now.
M&S weetabix are good we prefer them.

Tesco prices have soared, as have Morrisons which is/was a store in lower income areas. Asda is still fairly stable though limited ranges, nothing posh in Asda.

We shop online and instore at Waitrose, Aldi, Lidl, m&S, had baked beans from all,
love beans on toast with a fresh fried or poached egg on top then brown sauce and mug of Yorkshire tea.

Have a lovely day everyone, in hopefully, sunshine.

AwaaFaeHom · 25/04/2023 08:53

Asda's prices have gone up similar to Tesco imo. They all have. They've had no option because their costs have gone up - minimum wage went up from £8.91 in March 2022 to £10.42 in April 2023. That's a 16.95% increase in just over a year.

Their profit margins are way less than that, usually 2% to 3%.

VincentVaguer · 25/04/2023 08:58

Yes, all prices have gone up globally. For everything. The actual production of the tins is probably double what it was last year. Unless supermarkets are taking a hit on the value items they will also have to increase in price. Its a worry.

Willmafrockfit · 25/04/2023 08:59

sausages in tesco i used to pay £1.50 now £2.50
i couldnt justify buying sausages yesterday.
have to check on my supermarket.com to see the price of bog standard sausages

Astrabees · 25/04/2023 09:05

I buy Branston instead of Heinz and they are nicer as well as cheaper . My moment of shock was buying some healthy breakfast cereal. Bite sized shreddies in Tesco were £4.40 !!!! I got some Tesco bran flakes for 85p instead.

Catspyjamas17 · 25/04/2023 09:14

Heinz have been terrible for five years plus. I love the Aldi own brand, they are like Heinz used to be. Bigger beans, more beans.

Heinz now are more like the 9p beans I got once as a student. Once because you soon realised it wasn't worth it and got the 20p ones instead.

I don't usually buy them as way to expensive for me and I don't fall the branded is better crap. I did buy some last week though as Morrisons had a card offer of 4 for £3.50

Catspyjamas17 · 25/04/2023 09:20

Beans and ketchup are not nutritionally terrible. Ketchup is just a condiment so you hardly need to consider the nutritional content unless you are coating every meal in it. Beans in themselves have nutritional value, even tinned - fibre (really good, 8g for half a can), protein, fat and carbohydrates, and are filling for not that many calories. Baked beans contain sugar and salt but as long as you generally have these things in moderation it's not an issue.

PrettyMaybug · 25/04/2023 09:26

Can't fathom why ANYone would spend this. You can get a 4 pack of them from Aldi and Lidl for about £1.50.

RudsyFarmer · 25/04/2023 09:32

I’m intrigued who is spending money on so many brands that have shot up!! I’m trying to think what brands I still buy off offer and probably the only thing I can think of is tea bags.

Cantthinkof1rightnow · 25/04/2023 09:35

@PinkFootstool, No, it isn't £1.33.per tin, it's 75p a tin...it was 12 tins for £9, so obviously less than a pound per tin....it wasn't 9 tins for 12 quid which is what you've worked it out as.

Yeah Twinings EB. DH complains about the price every time we buy it. I'm only getting them as Aldi annoyingly seem to have stopped doing their EB in my local store.
