Who is spending £1.40 on a tin of Heinz baked beans?

Bloody hell - I haven't bought baked beans for ages and went to add them to weekly shop and couldn't believe the price of them. Ended up going for own brand (which I've had before and are fine). I'm sure Heinz must know what they're doing but their like baked beans for millionaires now!

(Lighthearted btw)

I know right, what an absolute bargain!😁

It's only a bargain if you can use it. I would struggle to find the space for it tbh, and theres only two of us. I think you've only got three days to eat it once it's opened...

Barleysugar86 · 25/04/2023 00:14

I don't eat any other variety but there are still deals better than that, so I'm assuming the only people paying that are those that don't care too much on the cost.

Iceland this week got 12 tins of Heinz Beans for £10. Still a lot but nothing like £1.40 a tin!

RightOnTheEdge · 25/04/2023 00:23

I haven't eaten Heinz beans for a long time, I went right off them.
I prefer Supermarket own brands especially Tesco. I haven't got an M&S near me though so I haven't tried theirs.

Certain brands I'll use substitution, although tea bags I always prefer branded ones

BusterGonads · 25/04/2023 02:56

I've always refused to buy Heinz anything.

Zippedydoo123 · 25/04/2023 05:00

We changed to Branston brand a while back to save on cost. We always bu y the pack of four.

Fedupofdiets · 25/04/2023 05:58

I went to my Dbro house the other day who has had a brand new kitchen fitted. He has this lovely walk larder and when I opened it the first thing I exclaimed was "bloody hell you must be rich you have Heinz baked beans". Who wouldve thought we would class Heinz beans as a luxury product 😩

Kikisweb · 25/04/2023 06:20

All the Branston lovers- Asda Smartprice beans are made by Branston and cost something like 30p a tin. They are my fave. With shopping location makes a difference- I live in a big big town with 5 or 6 Aldis, same number of Lidls, 2 giant Asdas, 1 really giant Tescos, 2 large Morrisons, 3 M&S Food etc so its easy to shop around for price deals. I don't buy Heinz ever as its a waste of money imo.

LukesDiner · 25/04/2023 06:34

I now live in Thailand and am delighted if I find a tin of Heinz beans under 3 quid... we make beans on toast a real treat food now!

Cakencookieobsessed · 25/04/2023 06:41

I get Lidl beans for 27p, they taste fine. Heinz are watered now anyway so probably no better quality. I won't buy Heinz again. I saw them for £1.80 a tin in Asda the other week or £6 for the 4 pack.

Beautiful3 · 25/04/2023 06:59

I stopped buying it, when it hit the pound. My dad still buys them, because he won't eat anything else. I've stopped heinz sauces and beans, but still buy their soup on special offer. I've tried others but the kids won't eat it.

TeaAndTwoSugars · 25/04/2023 07:20

We started buying tesco own brand baked beans which are much better.
Also their tomato sauce as well which i wasn't sure about at first but now I don't mind it.
The price of heinz tomato ketchup for a large bottle is 4 pounds..for ketchup.
Like we go through at least two a month..I think tescos was under 2 quid.

TheMummy1417 · 25/04/2023 07:28

I bought a homepride pasta bake last week - £2.80 a jar 😱 Used to be £1 or under! No longer a cheap, easy midweek tea!

FrauleinElsaMars · 25/04/2023 07:29

My husband is the paying for them and possibly single handedly keeping Heinz in business 😅😡he says he can taste the difference on any own brand. I don't like beans so can't judge.

MajesticWhine · 25/04/2023 07:34

I get a 4 pack for £3.99 from Ocado. Usually stay on brand as DD is very fussy and beans are one of the few foods she might actually eat.

BarbaraofSeville · 25/04/2023 07:35

Just because something is different doesn't necessarily mean it is inferior.

And when the price difference is so large, it's a good thing to see if you are happy with cheaper products, which can save a lot of money over time if these are items you buy often. This is 'look after the pennies and the pounds look after themselves' in action.

It could be looked at as 'which do you prefer, a tin of Heinz beans or a tin of other beans and a pound or more left over to spend on something else'.

turnthetoiletpaperroundproperly · 25/04/2023 07:37

The prices are scandalous. I dont have a budget per se but I try to not waste money, I am finding it hard work to keep trying to come up with different ideas for meals within my own self imposed idea of what I like ot spend each week. Its stressful.

I'm happy to eat the supermarket own brands thankfully. My local shop is selling Alpro soya for £2.69. I vowed never to buy it from there again, but here I am, no soya for my coffee and I can't be bothered to go to the supermarket today.

Black Coffee GIF

Have you tried your coffee black? It really is tasty and enjoyable if your brand isn’t too bitter.

VincentVaguer · 25/04/2023 07:41

A bit niche - but my favourite in coffee is Alpro unsweetened almond milk - the fresh one. I can report back that the Sainsbury own brand fresh unsweetened almond milk is exactly the same.

Arniesleftleg · 25/04/2023 07:53

I buy the half tins from M&S and they're lovely. Or Aldi beans, they're so much better than henna anyway.

While we're at it, how come cereal producers have whacked their prices up so high yet own brand stuff remains really reasonable, surely they all use the same crops?

SinnerBoy · 25/04/2023 07:55

AspinallaSmythe · Yesterday 09:50

I’ve tried a lot of own brand since prices have shot up. My favourite is M&S own brand - 50p.

Thanks for that tip!

I think it's either an experiment to see how much people will pay to keep buying the brand rather than a cheaper alternative.

Or they actively want to reduce the amount of product they produce, without reducing income. Perhaps the factories are beyond capacity and they just can't match demand? Or by producing less, they can turn off some of their production lines and save electricity etc?

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 25/04/2023 08:06

We switched to Tesco beans and they're actually much nicer - won't be going back to Heinz now.

Tink1990 · 25/04/2023 08:12

They were £1.60 per tin in Tesco the other week! Couldn't believe it. I begrudgingly did buy it, but along with a 55p tin of tesco own brand so I could try. 55p own brand every time from now on!
