Who is spending £1.40 on a tin of Heinz baked beans?

Bloody hell - I haven't bought baked beans for ages and went to add them to weekly shop and couldn't believe the price of them. Ended up going for own brand (which I've had before and are fine). I'm sure Heinz must know what they're doing but their like baked beans for millionaires now!

(Lighthearted btw)

Same people who are spending £1.50 on a packet of ginger nuts 🤯

Try being coeliac. You can double the price and halve the amount in the pack.

Same with bread or pasta or anything gluten free.

I can’t afford to eat GF products anymore. I just stick to meat, veg and rice. Healthier yes, but it’s frustrating if you just want a treat (comes to to something when a slice of toast is a treat!).

Please nonone tell me to bake my own. Sometimes you just want tea and biscuits, I don’t want to bake the bloody things first.

Is there anyone like me who tried the mid range brand and didn’t like them but got on well with the really cheap ones? Or have people not stooped that low yet? They’re seriously okay.

We’ve always used value products (so no way down for us!), we shop in Adli now as there is one a 5 min walk away, but we used to use Tesco.

Always used to buy there 9p tins of baked beans etc. They were fine.

Willmafrockfit · 25/04/2023 10:11

i liked the value beans, they were juicier

When I started eating low carb I tried Heinz salt & sugar free baked beans. They were so disgusting that I've been making my own ever since. They're not that much cheaper tbh - I'd say the M&S ones beat them on price, but they are tasty & healthy.

FredaFox · 25/04/2023 10:48

I'll try M&S beans, can recommend M&S tomato soup at 65p over Heinz at £1.40 a tin
They also do mushroom and chicken at 65p

gettingoldisshit · 25/04/2023 10:51

The only Heinz product i buy now is ketchup and thats only because the kids will not eat any other brand! They are an absolute joke with their price increases!

BarbaraofSeville · 25/04/2023 10:51

M&S tomato soup (and Waitrose Essential) are both the same as Baxter's tomato soup as far as I can tell. All far nicer than Heinz and for Waitrose/M&S, less than half the price.

starfishmummy · 25/04/2023 11:23

I do if DH and I are having beans on toast for our dinner. 70p each plus the bread/butter and perhaps a bit of cheese is still cheap for a main meal.

If its just dh having them as part of a full English he chooses to buy a himelf cheaper brand.

PineapplePomPom · 25/04/2023 11:46

Heinz Tomato soup £1.70 🤯 I've started buying Sainsbury's own brand 57p EXACTLY the same. Honestly if you put them side by side, I could not tell the difference!

That's really good to know, thank you.

Moonshine60 · 25/04/2023 13:09

For the first time ever I bought a supermarket own brand of baked beans (Tesco). Tested them on DH who is notoriously fussy but seems he likes them better than Heinz (after all these years, who'd a thunk it). I've been using a lot more own brands recently and it has really saved me money and made no difference to flavour in most cases.

Spendonsend · 25/04/2023 13:18

Just a heads up that the salt, fat, sugar and calories in different brands can be surprisingly different. It doesnt follow that cheaper is worse either, but its worth checking if you are sensitive about salt/sugar or fats for any reason.

Airspice · 25/04/2023 14:58

I used to buy my daughter Walkers crisps for school as a ‘treat’ as she preferred them and I’m normally a value gal 😄 They were £4 for a box of 20, I suffered it. The third time I bought the box, £4.50. I grumbled. Went to buy the fifth box the other day, £4.85!!! In a couple of months! I’ve told her it’s the last box she’s getting!

NaNaNaNaNaNaBaNaNa · 25/04/2023 17:00

My fussy 3yo loves the Heinz beans and sausages - £1.70 or £2 per tin!
I discovered Aldi did some for about 59p so I bought some and tentatively fed them to him for the first time yesterday, making a hasty exit in case of meltdown.

He didn't notice. Jackpot!

Like others I can afford Heinz but I object to the ridiculous price increases recently.

BarbaraofSeville · 25/04/2023 07:35

Just because something is different doesn't necessarily mean it is inferior.

And when the price difference is so large, it's a good thing to see if you are happy with cheaper products, which can save a lot of money over time if these are items you buy often. This is 'look after the pennies and the pounds look after themselves' in action.

It could be looked at as 'which do you prefer, a tin of Heinz beans or a tin of other beans and a pound or more left over to spend on something else'.

Yes I think it’s good to sort of re-set every now and then.

A while back I bought the absolute cheapest version of everything. Some things I found just the same and some I found barely edible.. but at least now I know where I draw the line. Teabags for instance - I know which brands I like.

Hbh17 · 25/04/2023 21:01

People who like the taste.
People who don't look at prices.
I buy baked beans very rarely - I have no idea what they're supposed to cost, tbh.

Tell me about it! Saw an advert for some new Nairn biscuits, managed to find them in Sainsburys and they were £2.70! For that princely sum I got 4 packs of 2 biscuits 🥲 I mean they’re lovely but why? Why is it so much for us that are suffering for a life long medical condition and yet Vegans get a bigger selection and a whole month of offers. I’m not bashing Vegans by the way, it’s just that being a Coeliac is not a choice ❤️

Me. I love beans.

And vegans don’t get miniature versions of food either.

Why is GF food so small?! Tiny biscuits, tiny slices of bread, tiny pizzas (looking at you, Pizza hut), but it’s all three times the price? It’s an absolute scandal and they get away with it becuase coeliacs don’t have an option but to buy it!

Isoqueen · 26/04/2023 07:47

They have gone up here in Oz too. I prefer Aldi ones. Heinz will go under if it does stuff like that, pushing up the prices too much. Serve them right.

IneedanewTV · 26/04/2023 07:50

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 24/04/2023 10:04

Heinz baked beans taste horrible because they use sweetener in them now, so I wouldn't buy them at any price. Branston are much better, but hard to find. My DC aren't really fans of baked beans, so it's an occasional thing for me anyway.

I didn’t know that!

SophieCook · 26/04/2023 10:08

£1.99 for Devonshire tinned custard!! WTF?! We've moved back to powdered, as there is no way I'm paying that much for custard.

Where's that at? Tesco the tins of Ambrosia are 2 for £2.50 right now.

Teapleasebobb · 26/04/2023 17:51

I have pretty much stopped buying any branded food items. I might buy some bits if they're on offer in home bargains, but it's way cheaper to just do my shop in Aldi and buy their stuff.
