Who is spending £1.40 on a tin of Heinz baked beans?

Bloody hell - I haven't bought baked beans for ages and went to add them to weekly shop and couldn't believe the price of them. Ended up going for own brand (which I've had before and are fine). I'm sure Heinz must know what they're doing but their like baked beans for millionaires now!

(Lighthearted btw)

I had a hankering for beans with vegetarian sausages recently and was horrified at the price of the Heinz one at £2 a tin, I got the Sainsburys own brand for 50p. I always buy supermarket own brand beans anyway and generally find them nicer than Heinz.

cantelouper · 24/04/2023 13:33

Are HP beans still available?

Whats the thinking behind starting your child on branded goods which are always more expensive in the first place though? Presumably there are SEN kids who have never tried Heinz or whatever and eat supermarket own in preference.
All the brands are tomato, vinegar and sugar with beans in variable amounts. There’s not a better or worse version really as it’s all processed the same way. Heinz have no more or less nutrition than any other.

We always bought Tesco own beans, always shopped there. Now dd won't eat any beans but tesco own. We moved house. Tesco is now 45mins away, they don't deliver here. Now it's a trek to stock up on beans for her and she eats a lot.

I'm happy to eat the supermarket own brands thankfully. My local shop is selling Alpro soya for £2.69. I vowed never to buy it from there again, but here I am, no soya for my coffee and I can't be bothered to go to the supermarket today.

Thomasina79 · 24/04/2023 13:46

Well I have a very fussy cat who rules me with a rod or iron. I thought he would only eat expensive whiskas dry food, but I have found he will eat the dry Lidl ones. Still insists on the soft whiskas in the evening though. I think it is time he got a job!

nomdegrrr1 · 24/04/2023 13:52

Husband will only eat Heinz.

Heinz to Home subscription meant that as a first order I got 24 cans for £18 something and free delivery and their sandwich spread was also a lot cheaper.

Seriously considering getting Aldi beans for me and having a single tin of Heinz in the cupboard to break out when he wants some.

If any of you need to buy them, if your kids won’t eat any others then have a look on Amazon. You can get them for £1 a tin. Personally, I prefer M&S. I also love their ketchup which tastes like it contains actual tomatoes, and is half the price of Heinz.
it is always worth checking Amazon for prices. DH loves Nescafé, and the large jar varies in Price from £5 - 8 in local supermarkets and online. We have got it for £4.20 for the large jar on subscribe and save, and you can always skip a delivery or change quantities, but still get it at the same price. Ditto with Sanex shower gel. Per 100ml, the price varied from 88p in Tesco, 77p with Ocado, and 60p with Superdrug. We have got it on subscribe and save for 42p per 100ml. And that price is locked in.

Study in Which magazine this month. Forgive if PP have posted this; haven't RTFT.

So Heinz came 7th out of 11 brands, mostly supermarket own, often at a quarter of the price.

You see this again and again, Heinz beans (also ketchup and soup) almost always performs poorly for taste/quality in blind tests even amongst people who insist they can only eat Heinz.

A fool and their money....

MeinKraft · 24/04/2023 14:47

I think their sales must be mostly the little convenience stores and garages with little to no other choice!

ifonly4 · 24/04/2023 14:56

Not me. I can buy 4 cans for £1.70 from Tescos that we both really like.

Tentoseveninthemorning · 24/04/2023 16:13

The popularity of M&S baked beans must be spreading as they’re the only substitutions on my food order (Branston not Heinz )

£1.70 for a ton of Heinz tomatoes soup!!!!! Wtaf

I know right, what an absolute bargain!😁

slowquickstep · 24/04/2023 20:07

Heinz are so watery, worth about 20p a tin i reckon

Pertinentowl · 24/04/2023 21:43

So what’s the justification with them being that much more expensive than the other brands? Did they ever explain why?

VintageThoughts · 24/04/2023 21:48

Not me any more. Switched to Sainsburys own brand last week and they're actually really nice.

Think I'm going to stop buying all their products, they're taking the bloody mick!!

Startyabastard · 24/04/2023 21:48

I've never bought Heinz but was aghast when they reached £1.
We all have limits in our heads about what we'd pay for something and they're taking the piss.
I don't like the m&s ones, too sugary and too much bean juice for me.
I buy Waitrose essentials ones at 55p. I've heard Asda just essentials are good.

SpringIntoChaos · 24/04/2023 22:08

I was astonished today in Sainsbury's, to see the price of eggs!!! £2.80 for SIX!!! Completely bonkers! 6 sodding eggs...£2.80!!

Seriously...what the actual fuck? 😱 for the first time ever, I've not bought eggs 😢 Just couldn't justify that!

Southeastdweller · 24/04/2023 22:15

M&S beans fan here too. No can of baked beans are worth £1.40 and don't start me on their ketchup prices.

I don't see how Heinz can justify their prices at the moment. They are effectively making their products luxury foods and if this thread and IRL conversations I have are anything to go by, most people aren't buying their stuff. If was working for Heinz, I would be seriously be worried about my job right now.

Purrfecto · 24/04/2023 22:20

It’s greed, these companies are taking the piss with their prices.

mumda · 24/04/2023 22:27

I paid £10 for 12 tins at morrisons on offer.
Then 24 tins at morrisons for 16 quid from Costco.

Suzi888 · 24/04/2023 22:29

Your worries about a tin of beans when ketchup is a fiver 😂

JingleBellez · 24/04/2023 22:33

I spent 1.75 on a tin of Heinz Spaghetti and sausages - ASD kids who NEED it.

World has gone mad!

JingleBellez · 24/04/2023 22:34

Ketchup is Six quid at my coop!

userxx · 24/04/2023 22:39

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 24/04/2023 13:23

Me, I can't eat Aldi ones.

I went for the proper cheap Aldi beans today 20 odd pence, I'll report back if I'm still alive.

VincentVaguer · 24/04/2023 23:15

900g of heniz ketchup was 3.50 with a tescos clubcard
