Who is spending £1.40 on a tin of Heinz baked beans?

Bloody hell - I haven't bought baked beans for ages and went to add them to weekly shop and couldn't believe the price of them. Ended up going for own brand (which I've had before and are fine). I'm sure Heinz must know what they're doing but their like baked beans for millionaires now!

(Lighthearted btw)

Dh does. Hes adamant he prefers them to aldi.

he was eating aldi for about 18 months before I told him, and he didn’t complain then. Now he knows, it’s an issue. I don’t buy them he does. I also think they are watery compared to aldi.

letsallmeetupinthehyear2000 · 24/04/2023 10:17

I’ve just eaten Lidls own brand on toast. Tasted fine to me😀

Pigflewpast · 24/04/2023 10:18

There were 3 things I always bought branded when I changed to cheaper brands of everything else. Heinz baked beans, Heinz ketchup and Hellmans mayonnaise. I’ve just swapped to supermarket own for them all and nobody has noticed, except my teenage son who prefers the new beans. He mayonnaise alone was something like £2 cheaper

Me 😞 DS can’t eat any other types of beans and it’s one of the only filling things he eats as well. The rest of us eat Asda’s own beans. I think they’re just the same!

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/04/2023 10:18

Where that? They’re £1.57 here!
Much prefer Branson anyway.

heidihigh · 24/04/2023 10:18

I was shocked at Heinz's price increase recently - went to buy a tin of spaghetti and sausages (guilty pleasure Blush) and they were £2! Or 3 for a fiver which is still extortionate, imo.

TheSnailAndTheWaaaail · 24/04/2023 10:19

I used to never buy anything but Heinz beans, and I can still afford them technically but I refuse to pay their extortionate prices!

I've swapped to Stockwell ones, Tesco own brand. And honestly no one in the family can honestly tell the difference! Even DH who is usually a brand snob likes them. 27p a tin

Ebobo43 · 24/04/2023 10:21

Not beans but The Stockwell spaghetti whoops (from Tesco) are only 16p and IMO nicer than Heinz. More tomatoey and less watery and the hoops are a bit thicker… :)

Beaverbridge · 24/04/2023 10:21

Nope. Aldis or Lidyls for me. Also stopped buying tins of soup. Buy Knorrs packets , really nice.

NoFall · 24/04/2023 10:22

Brrrrrrrrrrrr · 24/04/2023 10:11

M&S ones are 50p and far superior.

My question is who is spending £1.95 on a six pack of Walkers or £1.95 on a Heinz soup. Also does anyone ever buy Alpro nut milks full price?

With any product, if it’s the only ones that a child will eat, many parents have to buy them.

BarelyLiterate · 24/04/2023 10:22

Certainly not me. The price of Kellogg’s cereals have also gone through the roof. It’s own brand beans & cereal all the way in my house. Waitrose’s & M&S are both excellent.

Heinz & Kelogg’s are both American corporations, obv, and they appear to be trying to maximise their profits in the U.K. despite the strength of the dollar vs the pound. Presumably they are not stupid & realise they will inevitably lose market share with this strategy.

abigailsnan · 24/04/2023 10:27

M&S for me and Aldi for beans & sausage was 40p but not sure what they are priced at now .

Crabwoman · 24/04/2023 10:27

Last summer Tesco stopped sticking heinz tins (I and think think Whiskers car food) in a dispute over pricing. Not sure if they have resolved it?

FawnFrenchieMum · 24/04/2023 10:29

We always said we would compromise on beans or ketchup but I can no longer bring myself to pay those prices. Ketchup is eye wateringly expensive.

We could afford to but choose to spend it on other things instead. £5.50 on ketchup is an Asda create your own pizza (nicer then a take away IMO) foe example.

User158349890 · 24/04/2023 10:29

I bought 12 for £9 in Waitrose a couple of weeks ago, I believe they were similar price in Asda, it's always expensive to buy single cans

Agree on them losing market share unless they change strategy. There was a time I would never have contemplated own brand beans from anywhere until I tried the M&S ones, the same with their 75p Bran flakes, game changing.

M&S is expensive in other areas but those two products alone save me on average £8-£10 per week. Switching to beans on toast makes a £3.50 sandwich 55p do that a couple of times plus we get through 2 boxes of cereal which saves a few pounds too. Granted the saving is swallowed up by ridiculous energy bills but every little helps and I don’t feel like I’m missing out either.

VincentVaguer · 24/04/2023 09:58

I have also switched to m and s beans but I still buy Heinz ketchup.

Try Asda own brand ketchup, just as good (and I’ve tried all of them😂) and a LOT cheaper.

LittleLegsKeepGoing · 24/04/2023 10:37

Not us. We much prefer the Aldi ones...and not just because they're 40p a tin.

Now Heinz tomato sauce appears to be for the wealthy only, £3 for a bottle! Definitely sticking with the 75p version from Aldi (again we prefer it, but the price difference is obscene for virtually the same product!).

Prettypaisleyslippers · 24/04/2023 10:39

4 tins for £4 in sainsburys at the mo, that’s doable

Thesearmsofmine · 24/04/2023 10:39

Not me! Own brand beans and ketchup here(Sainsburys ketchup is the nicest according to my dc). My dc love Heinz tomato soup but the prices are ridiculous now and I won’t buy it. Own brand cereals for us too. I figure they will have to lower the prices once they lose enough sales.

Kvetching · 24/04/2023 10:43

Our kids are young adults now so we haven’t bought beans in a long time. But if I did buy them, it would always be Heinz.

SchoolTripDrama · 24/04/2023 10:48

My Autistic child eats Heinz Macaroni sodding cheese for every evening meal and that's £1.50 per tin or 3 for £5 (except Asda which is 4 for £5)

The Aldi ketchup is so much nicer than Heinz. I don't understand the Heinz love at all. Although I did buy their mayo recently to try, as I've heard it's good. I haven't tried it yet though (and it was on offer when I bought it).

Blurpy · 24/04/2023 10:50

Branston are much better than Heinz, and Aldi beans are a very good Branston dupe.

I far prefer co-op spaghetti hoops to Heinz. Heinz sauce is very watery.

MissyB1 · 24/04/2023 10:54

Aldi own beans are fine, but if I’m going to M&S I get a few tins of theirs in - definitely the best! Same for their ketchup.
And I refuse to buy Mcvities biscuits anymore, the prices are stupid.
