Who is spending £1.40 on a tin of Heinz baked beans?

Bloody hell - I haven't bought baked beans for ages and went to add them to weekly shop and couldn't believe the price of them. Ended up going for own brand (which I've had before and are fine). I'm sure Heinz must know what they're doing but their like baked beans for millionaires now!

(Lighthearted btw)

It was 12 tins for £9, 2 x 6 packs, Rishi's maths classes are definitely needed, not £1.33 a can, not £16. How do people shop if they can't do simple maths

I can do maths. Someone else said it was £1.33 per tin. I was pointing out that would make it £16, not the £9 that it actually cost.

Lasouthpaw · 24/04/2023 12:05

I just bought a tin this morning. We're having them as part of our dinner tonight. I'm quite particular about baked beans as I'm not the biggest fan.

I think I'm used to the price hikes now. I shop across a few supermarkets and get a lot on offer. I couldn't afford a £20 lamb joint but I can afford to buy the beans I like at £1.40.

It is a like a tax on parents of sn children

i used to prefer Brantons also
and cross and blackwell

but now use shop's own, not really a bake bean fan though

TheSaturdayAfternoonnessOfIt · 24/04/2023 12:11

Fortunately, I prefer own brand. I feel sorry for people who have to cater for those who find it difficult to tolerate anything but branded beans. £1.40 for beans is ridiculous. Not so long ago you'd get a 4 pack for that.

Badbudgeter · 24/04/2023 12:12

I switched to Tesco own ages ago but not the value ones . Even they have just about doubled in price though it used to 4 for 99p now 45p a can.

Easterfunbun · 24/04/2023 12:12

I ended up trying Tesco’s cheap, cheap ones for 27p and…. They were absolutely fine. I am never, ever going back to Heinz. Their greed has shot them in the foot as I know plenty of people who are also never going back. I probably could afford to pay the 1.40 per tin but it’s a principle. It is simply too expensive for one can.

Silverrocks · 24/04/2023 12:13

I think heinz have relied on their brand power for so long that it's probably a shock to them that many people will happily eat unbranded beans for a fraction of the price (and often with less sugar and salt in them). I suspect people are still buying them but more and more who can will switch and they'd have to do something pretty epic to win them back.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 24/04/2023 12:14

I sometimes still buy them but more often I'll get supermarket own brand now.

Same for ketchup and mayo. Heinz are taking the piss!

hiredandsqueak · 24/04/2023 12:14

We've switched to M&S too they must be noticing an increase in demand. I've bought their tinned tomatoes and soup as well and can't fault any of it.

Mushroomofficeglass · 24/04/2023 12:15

My dc luckily don't like heinz baked beans. They eat tesco at 50p a tin or £1.70 for 4. At the beginning of the pandemic they were 4 for a pound.
When I'm using baked beans in cooking (to bulk out a meal I use the 27p stockwell ones but dc don't like these on toast.
I dont understand why Heinz think they can be so pricy. Their profit margin must be massive.

Mumski45 · 24/04/2023 12:16

@Willmafrockfit your OP made me giggle as for once I went shopping with DH this weekend. He usually does all our shopping so I am rarely in a supermarket. I saw a massive display of Heinz beans at end of an isle and thought oh good they must be on offer. We have not had Heinz beans for months as DH keeps buying the cheaper ones from Lidl or Aldi. When I saw the price as you say £1.40 I nearly choked. I had to check that they were singles and not 4 packs.

Back to Lidl for us 😞.

DanceMonster · 24/04/2023 12:17

I have an autistic child who is very brand particular. So I’m still being Heinz beans (although I’ve never paid £1.40 a tin for them).

bibbitybobbityyhat · 24/04/2023 12:18

Not us. We buy Branston or Sainsburys own brand now and M&S tomato ketchup - the ketchup is a lot nicer. I've never particularly liked Heinz beans and got frustrated with DH for always buying them and wasting money. He's seen sense for about the last year!

GremlinBlinds · 24/04/2023 12:20

Because people just think "that's what they cost now I guess" instead of questioning it.

Never buy Heinz’s anyway. Branson beans are far tastier and gluten free too 👍. You can pick them up for about £3 for a pack of 4 x 400g tins.

Study in Which magazine this month. Forgive if PP have posted this; haven't RTFT.

Who is spending £1.40 on a tin of Heinz baked beans?
Easterfunbun · 24/04/2023 12:28

@GremlinBlinds

True but I was forced to try a cheaper brand (bean snob coupled with sensory food issues). I was so happy when I liked the 27p ones from Tesco 😂. Never going back lol.

CorvusPurpureus · 24/04/2023 12:29

Try living in parts of the ME!

They're £2.50 a tin when you can get them...in the Great Bean Drought of '21 there were expat facebook groups set up to report sightings (& flame wars when people hoarded...). 🤣

BertieBotts · 24/04/2023 12:32

All of us who live abroad :D

caringcarer · 24/04/2023 12:35

I'm happy with the Aldi baked beans.

CornishGem1975 · 24/04/2023 12:37

I was until recently because my DS would refuse anything other than Heinz when he was a bit smaller, and they're also my favourite but I can't justify it anymore so I've switched and nobody has noticed. I've done the same for ketchup, mayo etc. No brands anymore.

Wanted to buy a small tin of spaghetti hoops the other day. 90p for Heinz, 21p for Sainsburys own. You what mate?!

MsVestibule · 24/04/2023 12:51

We get through 2 or 3 tins a week, so I buy them in bulk from Asda - 2 six packs for £9 today, so 75p per tin. Great if you can afford to pay £9 at a time for them, not so great if you're on a very tight weekly budget.

Although I suppose when I was on a tight budget, I bought Asda Smart Price beans 🤷‍♀️.

KnittedCardi · 24/04/2023 13:22

I'm still buying them. But they are just in my stash, we don't eat them often. Notice that they are on offer everywhere at the moment though. What size was that OP? Even Waitrose has them way cheaper than that.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 24/04/2023 13:23

Me, I can't eat Aldi ones.
