New Harry Potter TV adaptation: What details are you hoping get included?

Things that weren't in the film adaptations, either due to technology not being available to show it on film, budget, or cutting due to run time.

Little detail: in the Philosopher's Stone, one of the ways the Hogwarts letters are delivered to the Dursley house is rolled up inside a dozen eggs, passed through the window to Aunt Petunia (as the door is already nailed shut). I would love to see Aunt Petunia cracking open eggs and finding a Hogwarts letter inside each one.

Big detail: The whole scene in which the Weasley family attempt to come get Harry from Privet Drive ahead of the Quidditch World Cup, by connecting their fireplace to the Floo network, then can't get out as it's an electric fire, end up blasting half the living room apart and Fred & George "accidentally" let Dudley eat a Ton Tongue Toffee.

What's yours? One big detail and one little detail allowed each!

I always imagined Tim Roth in the role of Snape for the film version of HP - think he would have been perfect. But too old now, alas! Much as I liked Alan Rickman, always felt he was too old for the role.

Yes, Snape would have been in his early to mid thirties in the books. A young Tim Roth would have been perfect!

Big: the marauders. They missed out so much here.

Also Ginny. I know Harry marries the family as much as her but book Ginny is great and a match for him. Film Ginny is a soppy damn rag and it offends me.

Actually all the Weasleys. The least offensive was Mr Weasley but the others were all dire. Ron was one of my favourites in the book.

Also (maybe heresy) I didn't like Alan Rickman as Snape. Too old, not tortured enough, not skinny enough. I'm not saying he was bad (the stopper on death bit, the bit in gof where he stands behind them when they are doing homework) but I didnt get him as much as I did in the books (he's my favourite).

Oh and a Sirius who is hot. The point of him is that he's a ridiculously handsome rich pure blood. And not always noble and nice.

Ron actually being Ron.

Loads of scenes in the Burrow, especially in chamber of secrets.

Quidditch in all the books.

Newnamenewname109870 · 15/04/2023 08:49

It all makes me feel a bit nervous and strange though!

Maraudingmarauders · 15/04/2023 08:52

Little one: Sirius and Remus (and Peter) etc being the correct ages! They should only be early 30s in Harry's time.

Big one: Ginny and Hermione being proper kick ass rather than simpering like they do in the films.

Maraudingmarauders · 15/04/2023 08:59

Ooh just thought of another - the other minister chapter where the minister for magic introduces himself to the muggle prime minister!

I also hope they do a better job of Remus' werewolf. Given they had to write an essay on how to tell a real wolf and a werewolf apart I think it fair to assume werewolves don't look like they do in the film!

Billybagpuss · 15/04/2023 09:00

Dudley eating the tongue tied toffee

wejammin · 15/04/2023 09:03

Oooh so excited for this! Everyone's said everything is already thought of.
My most disappointing parts of the film were the Quidditch World Cup and all the scenes in the Burrow, would love loads more detail and intricacies.
Also please do justice to Dobby's death and seashell cottage.

I really hope the actors don't feel they have to caricature the movie actors. I can't imagine another Umbridge or Snape but I'm sure in the right hands it could be brilliant.

wonderinglywondering · 15/04/2023 09:12

Snape and Hagrid will be super hard I think. Apart from Alan Rickman being the wrong age, he was absolutely perfect IMO. And JKR turned down Robin Williams for Hagrid because she had always imagined Robbie Coltrane for it!

2pence · 15/04/2023 09:14

I'd also love to see the detailed backstory of the Mauraders Map and Lupin in the Shrieking Shack as a teen.

Agree that we also need Peeves, he's a major character and I think someone mischievous like the comedian Robert White could carry the character.

Does anyone have any actors in mind for our major adult characters? I actually like the idea of Adam Driver for Snape but doubt he'd sign a 7 year tv contract.

MousesInHouses · 14/04/2023 22:23

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh.
Very, very exciting. Will JKR have any say in the production?

I hope they will cast a better Harry, Hermione and Dumbledore.

Apparently she's an exec producer in the tv series, so hopefully.

HorribleNecktie · 15/04/2023 09:22

I hope they use some of the aesthetics and details of Hogwarts Castle that were in Hogwarts Legacy- there’s so much variety and depth in the way the game portrays the interiors and grounds that I’d love to see replicated - tapestries, thousands of moving paintings, articulated skeletons of beasts, suits of armour that move and occasionally beat the shit out of each other, Peeves causing havoc. A big part of the books was the idea of exploring the castle, finding secret passages, secret rooms and corridors, so it would be great to see Hogwarts become more of a character in itself.

Newnamenewname109870 · 15/04/2023 09:34

Peeves! The Weasley twins being awesome. The first meeting of Draco Malloy.

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 15/04/2023 09:34

The bit where Neville's Gran sees off the death eaters and puts Dawlish in St Mungos 🤣

Greentomatoes21 · 15/04/2023 09:49

More quips and smart remarks from the twins to Percy - the essay on cauldron bottoms etc was so funny and their general teasing of him.

Harry, for the love of God, PLEASE fix your old wand with the elder wand.

Better writing for Ginny. Book Ginny was brilliant but Bonnie Wright didn't have much to work with with script Ginny.

Tonks - never really 'got' her in the movies but she was brilliant in the books.

Kreacher and the Black family - much more required here. I read that Kreacher wasn't doing to appear in the movies at all until J K insisted upon it.

I would love to see the book resolution for Dudley.

thecatsthecats · 15/04/2023 10:03

Oh yes, and Sirius needs to be HOT.

Gary Oldman was a fucking dreadful choice.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 15/04/2023 10:06

I'm gutted that Ben Barnes is now probably too old to play Sirius, he was perfect for him when he was younger. There are a lot of fan made videos on YouTube of the marauders and he is always Sirius. Jaw droppingly beautiful and perfect.

OP posts:
MadEyeJudy · 15/04/2023 10:18

Ben Barnes would be perfect as older Sirius ..he's only about 40 & Sirius in mid 30s albeit with a bad paper round in Azkerban - both Smoking Hot!!. Ive seen photos of him at fan convention being presented with Gryfinndor ties etc so I reckon he would be up for it! (Full disclosure I'm not his agent...sadly!)

Newnamenewname109870 · 15/04/2023 10:25

Will it be all American actors? Crazy some new kids get to play them. Child me is gutted! Was always the dream.

WoodenFloorboards · 15/04/2023 10:32

JKR specified a 100% British cast for the movies, so I don't see why she'd change her approach for the TV series. Great trivia question - who are the only (non-speaking) US actors in the movies.l?

GinUnicorn · 15/04/2023 12:04

I vote

Asa Butterfield - James Potter
Rose Leslie - Lily Potter

Benedict Cumbersomething - Snape

WoodenFloorboards · 15/04/2023 12:13

Benedict Cumberbatch would be an amazing Snape, although of course he would never do it in a million years but even he's too old.

I think it makes sense to cast quite low profile age-appropriate actors in their early thirties as James and Lily's generation because for more established actors competing with Oldman/Threlfall/Spall and especially Alan Rickman would be a hazardous job. Going properly young gives you that distance and makes comparisons less risky.

I wonder whether they might go with a black Hermione? The problem is that she faces so much metaphorically racial bullying in book 2 and it would be painful to see a black child put through it on screen.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 15/04/2023 12:19

Mrs Weasley greeting the twins (that she'd shouted at on their way out) when they get back from the turmoil of the ending of the Quidditch World Cup.

Really summed up motherhood for me, that little snippet.

GinUnicorn · 15/04/2023 12:23

I would love a black or mixed race Hermione.

Cant imagine who they would cast as Dumbledore though - that’s a tough one

I like the idea of Jonathan Rhys Myers as Sirius Black.
