New Harry Potter TV adaptation: What details are you hoping get included?

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 14/04/2023 17:07

Things that weren't in the film adaptations, either due to technology not being available to show it on film, budget, or cutting due to run time.

Little detail: in the Philosopher's Stone, one of the ways the Hogwarts letters are delivered to the Dursley house is rolled up inside a dozen eggs, passed through the window to Aunt Petunia (as the door is already nailed shut). I would love to see Aunt Petunia cracking open eggs and finding a Hogwarts letter inside each one.

Big detail: The whole scene in which the Weasley family attempt to come get Harry from Privet Drive ahead of the Quidditch World Cup, by connecting their fireplace to the Floo network, then can't get out as it's an electric fire, end up blasting half the living room apart and Fred & George "accidentally" let Dudley eat a Ton Tongue Toffee.

What's yours? One big detail and one little detail allowed each!

Harry’s eyes being green and actually looking like his mother’s.

The scenes in St Mungo’s Hospital. Also Voldemort’s back story.

tryingtocatchthewind · 14/04/2023 17:17

The marauders!

MuffinToSeeHere · 14/04/2023 17:17

Little Detail: Peeves in general, but especially when the trio come across him singing after the Battle of Hogwarts and Ron’s “really takes into account the scope and tragedy of the thing, doesn’t it?” I hope they give Ron a fair outing in the series too - he was a lot funnier and more intelligent than the films allowed him to be.

Big Detail: The trip to St Mungo’s where they meet Lockhart again and Neville’s parents. Heartbreaking. I would have loved to see Matthew Lewis do that in the movies.

Oh what a fabulous thread. DH and I are about to start reading the books again to refresh our memories!

Qbish · 14/04/2023 17:18

Hermione's fight for liberation for House Elves.

Lolly86 · 14/04/2023 17:21

All of these! Especially peeves. Better explanation around the Rings history and Voldemoeta background. Better Ginny.
Love the films but can't wait for this

Worldgonecrazy · 14/04/2023 17:21

I hope they make Ron and Hermiones relationship less abusive than it was in the film. He seemed to be in a permanent silk. I did t notice it so much in the books?

wonderinglywondering · 14/04/2023 17:22

Ooh yes, better Ginny including all her relationships!

EdithGrantham · 14/04/2023 17:24

I can't watch the films because of how much they focus on action rather than storyline, I've tried several times because I love the books and loved a visit to the HP studio but the focus on poor CGI over storytelling really annoys me

Not sure if this counts as a big or little thing but I also hope they realistically cast actors for the characters who were Harry's parents age, they should all be in their early 30s at the start of the series not in their 50s like the actors in the films were!

Yes, definitely! Lily and James being 21/22 when they died makes it so much sadder. Although I have heard that it went that way in the film because JKR really wanted Alan Rickman to play Snape so they had to make everyone else's age match. And he was perfect as Snape so I can kind of forgive it.

Neville visiting his parents.

Sir Cadogan.

HuggingtheHRT · 14/04/2023 17:31

Oooh good thread...

Looking forward to:

  • Choosing a wand in Ollivanders - in fact anything to do with wand lore *The Sorting Hat *Fawkes bursting into flames *The Howler from Mrs Weasley *Anything Neville related
  • Moaning Myrtle - although I doubt she'll be a patch on Shirley Henderson's portrayal
  • Peeves

More Neville, like the scenes in St. Mungo's, his bravery in continuing Dumbledore's Army once the Death Eaters were in charge, his scenes in the grounds during the final battle, collecting the injured and deceased with Oliver Wood, including carrying in Colin Creevey's body (I read somewhere in an interview with Matthew Lewis that this scene was filmed but have never found it in any deleted scenes).

The inclusion of Winky's story in Goblet of Fire (although the Hermione SPEW thing was pretty weak).

More of Sirius and Harry in the short times they had together.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 14/04/2023 17:37

Agree with the Neville / St Mungo's scene.

Also would love to see more of Neville in the battle of Hogwarts - especially when he's talking about his grandmother and how she fought off a couple of death eaters when they came for her and went on the run 😃and then when she comes through the tunnel, is told Neville is already fighting, and says "Naturally" before running off to join the fray.

Actually loads of details from the battle of Hogwarts that I want to see - Kreacher leading the Hogwarts house elves out to fight, and the recovery of Colin Creevey's body are absolutely necessary, I can't read either of those bits without sobbing.

And Harry fixing his own phoenix feather wand with the elder wand, not just breaking the bloody thing in half!

And more of the Tonks/Lupin story that was cut from the films.

Peeves!! I actually have a jumper with all the missed out details printed on it, so I’ll be wearing that for a watch.

Much more of the original dialogue

Hehe! Yes! I'd forgotten about the bit with Kreacher leading the House Elves in battle "For Master Regulus" with the locket on his chest. Definitely that. And the whole of his story at the beginning of Deathly Hallows - his anguish and heartache at what he endured and suffered for the love of his master. Heartbreaking and deeply moving.

I need this jumper in my life. Grin

WoodenFloorboards · 14/04/2023 17:44

I don't know the films particularly well, but my top changes would be.
a) getting the ages of Lily and James' generation right.
b) Not having Voldemort and Harry having a huge battle all around Hogwarts before V realises his wand doesn't really work
c) making more of Neville's big hero moment with the Sword

I guess they should do Neville and his parents in St Mungo, but I personally will not watch it, because it's unbearable.

REP22 · 14/04/2023 17:47

On the fence about Peeves. Amusing in some scenes, infuriating in others. But absolutely NOT his little rhyme at the very end - "Now Voldy's gone mouldy", etc. Trivialises all the sacrifice and sorrow that went immediately before it in the worst and most unforgivable way.

Like a line in Titanic that utterly infuriates me - when 'Jack' is trying to push his way past a terrified passenger who is reciting the words of Psalm 23 in what he knows will be the last horrific moments of his life - "You wanna walk a little quicker through that valley there?!?" Angers me terribly every time. Or maybe I'm just thinking about it more because it's 14 April today.

I actually wouldn't mind seeing a bit more of Mrs. Norris, Filch's affection for her was rather touching.

Briallen · 14/04/2023 17:48

winky
voldermort dying like he was meant to- in the great hall like a mere mortal, not randomly dissolving outside

RoyalDeathCult · 14/04/2023 17:50

What I DON'T want to see is Harry and Voldemort zip zapping all over the gaff and Voldemort dissipating into fairy dust, rather than the very human death that he actually had.
