New Harry Potter TV adaptation: What details are you hoping get included?

Things that weren't in the film adaptations, either due to technology not being available to show it on film, budget, or cutting due to run time.

Little detail: in the Philosopher's Stone, one of the ways the Hogwarts letters are delivered to the Dursley house is rolled up inside a dozen eggs, passed through the window to Aunt Petunia (as the door is already nailed shut). I would love to see Aunt Petunia cracking open eggs and finding a Hogwarts letter inside each one.

Big detail: The whole scene in which the Weasley family attempt to come get Harry from Privet Drive ahead of the Quidditch World Cup, by connecting their fireplace to the Floo network, then can't get out as it's an electric fire, end up blasting half the living room apart and Fred & George "accidentally" let Dudley eat a Ton Tongue Toffee.

What's yours? One big detail and one little detail allowed each!

Snapes's seven potions challenge, guarding the Philosopher's Stone.
I presume they left out his protections to make Snape seem more likely to be the bad guy but it takes away from his character development.

BertieBotts · 14/04/2023 19:03

Alan Rickman as Snape was so totally different to how I imagined him from the books, I hope we get a proper Snape who is actually greasy, sneering, bitter and horrible. It would be really interesting to see!

A small thing - less weirdly dramatic moments like Harry almost falling out of the flying car. In the book they started out feeling triumphant then got really fed up because it was so hot and sweaty and boring.

Oh and the prefects bath. I was dying to see that.

WizardinTraining · 14/04/2023 19:11

It won’t be hard to improve on the films as they missed so much out but I agree some of the performances are going to be hard to beat - I can’t imagine any other McGonagal or Hagrig. A better Ginny could be virtually anyone mind you.

The prime minister scenes later on in the books plus Peeves and Percy.

Voldermorts journey stealing the Horcruxes. Really missed that in the film.

BunnyBerries · 14/04/2023 19:16

The scene where they are all waiting for the letter from Hogwarts to find out who will become the two House prefects. Harry expecting it will be him for Gryffindor (due to all he's had to face in his school career) and it turns out to be to Ron. Hermione seeing the letter and also just assuming it had been for Harry. How that affects Ron. And how it leads Ron and Hermione (as prefects) to spend more time together (important for their relationship to develop away from Harry).

Such a poignant scene for Ron and I think Dumbledore tells Harry later he thought Harry had a lot on his shoulders already. I think the films left out the whole prefects thing (maybe as it's quite a British thing, they'd have to explain it).

Ron and Hermione having their first kiss because Ron tried to save the elves.

Ginandrosemary · 14/04/2023 19:16

Great thread!

When Rita prints the story if Harry's heartbreak and Hermione gets a smaller egg. Mrs Weasley being cold towards her until Harry says it isn't true.

The story of Voldemort's mother.

Peeves.

The kitchens with the housewives. Wonky being drunk all the time.

Ginandrosemary · 14/04/2023 19:17

Auto correct!! Winky**

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 14/04/2023 19:18

Good autocorrect though, she was pretty wonky on all that butterbeer!

I was gutted we didn't get to see the Weasleys get stuck in the chimney so definitely that one.

And more of Ginny. Due to the films each only being two hours in length, we never really got to unpack her character on screen.

Maybe have it as a bit more of an ensemble so we see other people's viewpoints at certain times. Obviously Harry will still take centre stage

MyOwnVolt · 14/04/2023 19:27

Hermione shrinking her teeth
Dudley apologising
Peeves

Prescottdanni123 · 14/04/2023 19:30

And the full scene from book 4 where the death eaters attack the camp after the quidditch World Cup. Not just Harry running for three seconds and then getting knocked out.

Pieceofpurplesky · 14/04/2023 19:33

Most of the Half Blood Prince - more flashbacks, more reveals on Snape being the prince and why, Dumbledore's funeral.
The film was the weakest of them
All

"Have a biscuit, Potter"

McGonagall offering Harry a biscuit from a tartan tin when calming him down after he tells her he yelled at Umbridge and called her a liar for denying Voldemort is back.

UkuleleRose · 14/04/2023 18:32

I came here to say exactly this. That Voldemort was merely mortal was a very important part of the books and not acknowledging this trivialized the entire concept.

More Rita Skeeter!

Ditto the fact that child Riddle in the orphanage shouldn't have been a total dead eyed psychopath.

Just a slightly strange, slightly cruel little boy who might be understandably messed up, who then turned into a monster.

Wowz · 14/04/2023 19:45

It's going to be odd watching Potter without Coltrane, Rickman and Maggie Smith

A wee thing but what always annoys me is the changes to the Philosopher's Stone when the trio have gotten past Fluffy - in the book, Hermione loses her head when she encounters the Devil's Snare and is muttering 'a fire, but there's no wood!' and Ron shouts 'are you a witch or not?' - it was cut to the boys panicking and Hermione just sort of relaxing with a smug expression. And the logic task with the potions - just completely cut!

Agree with pp about the change to Ron's character - in the book, he's quite quick witted and has some funny quips but in the films, he's reduced to a gormless expression and an over exaggerated gulp.

It's a bad idea to get me started on this - I can go on for a while!

I agree about Ron's line "are you a witch or not?" I was annoyed they'd cut it, it was so funny.

I agree with a lot of other things that have been mentioned too. Neville's parents in the hospital, the swamp, Peeves.

When is this going to be on? I haven't seen anything about it.

iamenougheveryday · 14/04/2023 20:00

The beginning credits clearly stating that J K Rowling wrote the books. Stop the crazy cancel culture!!!

Sundaefraise · 14/04/2023 20:07

I want to see the death of Dobby and the escape from the Malfoys house to Bill and Fleurs seaside cottage.

BertieBotts · 14/04/2023 20:09

HAVE YOU GONE MAD?? Bellowed Ron. ARE YOU A WITCH OR NOT?!

And then Hermione stopping panicking instantly and being like oh right yes of course! Grin

It would be cool to see some more scenes of Harry and Dudley growing up together and Harry being baffled by doing accidental magic at school.

I hope they make it for a teen+ audience, and don't skim over some elements. I hadn't thought about Winky's drunkenness being skimmed over but it was. And how they changed Quirrel from blistering and burning when he touched Harry to just disintegrating in the film - that must have been so they could make it a 12 or PG (can't remember what it was now).

I've really enjoyed the recent His Dark Materials HBO TV series, I do hope they do HP justice like they did with that. It was much better than the awful film several years ago.

Stressybetty · 14/04/2023 20:38

Really excited for this. Hoping the actors are good. Hoping it actually makes sense and covers all the books properly. DH hasn't read the books and when we re watched the films recently I had to explain loads to him. He hadn't a clue what was going on sometimes and kept asking questions. One question was why was Voldemort so pissed off with everyone? That took some explaining.

Gothambutnotahamster · 14/04/2023 20:50

I agree with everything here - I'd like them to be true to the books and explore all the details as the books were practically perfect!

I do hope they do the casting well but it is hard to imagine people other than Alan Rickman or Robbie Coltrane! I'd like the characters to be like their book character descriptions and no re writing to appease any other agendas!

Madreb · 14/04/2023 21:19

Yes, I was really looking forward to the Quidditch World Cup and everything that happened straight after and was so disappointed by the films interpretation.

SoManyCreepyBears · 14/04/2023 21:32

So excited about this!
Hoping for better actors…
