New Harry Potter TV adaptation: What details are you hoping get included?

Things that weren't in the film adaptations, either due to technology not being available to show it on film, budget, or cutting due to run time.

Little detail: in the Philosopher's Stone, one of the ways the Hogwarts letters are delivered to the Dursley house is rolled up inside a dozen eggs, passed through the window to Aunt Petunia (as the door is already nailed shut). I would love to see Aunt Petunia cracking open eggs and finding a Hogwarts letter inside each one.

Big detail: The whole scene in which the Weasley family attempt to come get Harry from Privet Drive ahead of the Quidditch World Cup, by connecting their fireplace to the Floo network, then can't get out as it's an electric fire, end up blasting half the living room apart and Fred & George "accidentally" let Dudley eat a Ton Tongue Toffee.

What's yours? One big detail and one little detail allowed each!

I'd like them to not randomly set the Burrow on fire like they did in the movies

MsRead · 14/04/2023 17:52

The swamp that Fred and George put in the corridor and the other teachers couldn’t/ wouldn’t remove because it annoyed Umbridge. If memory serves correctly didn’t they leave a part of it as a strange tribute after the twins abruptly left school amid their pyrotechnic carnage?

Percy ‘I’m a prefect’ vs the twins pointed comments

The house elves, more of them please.

Peeves singing ‘Oh Potter, you rotter’.

The films left out so much of the humour and don’t even get started on why they cut the few Peeves scenes that were filmed.

Although never in the books, perhaps the odd staffroom scene punctured with vinegary comments from McGonegall?

CampervanKween · 14/04/2023 17:52

Oh it's really exciting. Looking forward to seeing it. Been thinking they should do this for ages.

Percy! His whole story arch was fundamental to some of the major incidents that enabled Voldermort but the films missed it out completely.

There’s a deleted scene from the films of Petunia finding rolled up letters inside eggs she’s cracking.

The St Mungo’s scene.

Luda Bagman and the twins.

Rectify the bizarre decision to make Beauxbatons a some sort of all girls finishing school full of swooning idiots.

Amazing, never seen that before! Imagine being on the props team working out how to do that and then it being cut - heart breaking!

Yes, definitely! Not sure what the thinking was on that.

Also, actual robes would be nice. Not just standard British school uniform!

Minor- Hermione shrinking her teeth (i think for the yule ball) and then not making them quite as big as they were originally.

Major- Harry hiding the Potions book in the Room of Requirement and marking the cabinet with "a dusty old tiara" aka Ravenclaws diadem.

wonderinglywondering · 14/04/2023 18:04

Cho and Harry’s date in the tea shop!

nilsmousehammer · 14/04/2023 18:06

Peeves!

Full depth to the marauders' map story: if you didn't know from the book, the film skipped so much there it didn't make much sense. And the patronus being a stag done properly.

Whoever plays Neville has a very tough act to follow, Matthew Lewis was so brilliant in the movement from sweet and clumsy little boy to the other boy born in July, the powerful adult hero who with Harry ended Voldemort. I'd love to see Neville's story drawn out more. Some of the performances in the films are so iconic - Matthew, Snape, McGonnagle - it's hard to imagine anyone else doing it!

Rockbird · 14/04/2023 18:09

I get the Peeves thing but no one would be better then Rik Mayall would have been and that makes me sad.

Pinkbonbon · 14/04/2023 18:11

Dudley redemption arc to be kept in.

Also possibly a redemption arc for draco but it depends. Book draco didn't need one but in the last film series he deserved a better conclusion.

Also would love to see Tom felton come back as lucius.

Cast to come from Europe and the UK because hogwarts is in Scotland.

Hermione to look like book hermione. Same for Harry.

I wish they’d released those deleted scenes even if it was for something like comic relief after he died. Having time for things like peeves will be awesome

00deed1988 · 14/04/2023 18:12

I could write about 100 points on it!

Little detail: Involving the house elves. All.of them. Dobby in all the books. S.P.E.W. Winky. Kreacher being redeemed. OK that may not be a small detail but I really want the house elves!

Big Detail: ALL the different memories that Dumbedore shows Harry trying to look at Voldemort's life. I was so looking forward to them and they poorly showed 2.

So many details I want to see and stories I want to see.

HappiDaze · 14/04/2023 18:15

I love HP I can't wait for the new series and all the extra bits they missed out from the books esp all the other characters

Shortpoet · 14/04/2023 18:17

I’m really excited about this. I want the tv show to make sense in its own right. DH hadn’t read the books and he came out of the films baffled at times and I had to fill in the significance of things from the books.

My things are Hermione to be more like book Hermione.
And all of the memories seen in the pensieve.

CantGetDecentNickname · 14/04/2023 18:18

Things happening several times over in different lessons over the course of a term or two as detailed in the book which build the storyline but could only be shown once in the films.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 14/04/2023 18:32

I definitely want Ron to be more like book Ron, he was so dumbed down in the films, he really got relegated to basic bumbling comic relief for a lot of them.

What I DON'T want to see is Harry and Voldemort zip zapping all over the gaff and Voldemort dissipating into fairy dust, rather than the very human death that he actually had.

I came here to say exactly this. That Voldemort was merely mortal was a very important part of the books and not acknowledging this trivialized the entire concept.

More Rita Skeeter!

UkuleleRose · 14/04/2023 18:37

Also, Rita Skeeter as not a sexy vamp hitting on children.

Definitely. Really want to see Hermione trap her in a jar as a beetle, too.

Slightly off-topic, but have you read/listened to Tom Felton's (Draco Malfoy) memoir? Really lovely, highly recommend.

Clutterbugsmum · 14/04/2023 18:52

Include all the bit that make the characters 'human'. I hated the way they took all the interactions and only used the one's which moved the story on.

Waitwhat23 · 14/04/2023 18:57

A wee thing but what always annoys me is the changes to the Philosopher's Stone when the trio have gotten past Fluffy - in the book, Hermione loses her head when she encounters the Devil's Snare and is muttering 'a fire, but there's no wood!' and Ron shouts 'are you a witch or not?' - it was cut to the boys panicking and Hermione just sort of relaxing with a smug expression. And the logic task with the potions - just completely cut!

Agree with pp about the change to Ron's character - in the book, he's quite quick witted and has some funny quips but in the films, he's reduced to a gormless expression and an over exaggerated gulp.

It's a bad idea to get me started on this - I can go on for a while!
