New Harry Potter TV adaptation: What details are you hoping get included?

Things that weren't in the film adaptations, either due to technology not being available to show it on film, budget, or cutting due to run time.

Little detail: in the Philosopher's Stone, one of the ways the Hogwarts letters are delivered to the Dursley house is rolled up inside a dozen eggs, passed through the window to Aunt Petunia (as the door is already nailed shut). I would love to see Aunt Petunia cracking open eggs and finding a Hogwarts letter inside each one.

Big detail: The whole scene in which the Weasley family attempt to come get Harry from Privet Drive ahead of the Quidditch World Cup, by connecting their fireplace to the Floo network, then can't get out as it's an electric fire, end up blasting half the living room apart and Fred & George "accidentally" let Dudley eat a Ton Tongue Toffee.

What's yours? One big detail and one little detail allowed each!

Mrs Weasley greeting the twins (that she'd shouted at on their way out) when they get back from the turmoil of the ending of the Quidditch World Cup.

Really summed up motherhood for me, that little snippet.

Oh yes I loved this. "What if you'd died and the last thing I'd said to you was that you didn't get enough owls?" Whoever plays Molly has big shoes to fill, Julie Walters was very good.

Dh reckons Dave Bautista (sp??) for Hagrid. Maybe!

Rory McCann for Hagrid please.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 15/04/2023 12:45

That's a good idea!

Hermione being played by a black actress?

Gothambutnotahamster · 15/04/2023 12:57

If they're true to the book, Hermione is racially abused quite a lot (for being a muggle) that I think having a black hermione would be particularly tough on a black child playing that part.

They could easily bring in more diversity with the adult actors who are big characters (so not meaning any kind of tokenism) or with Neville or Dumbledore.

Hermione being played by a black actress?

There is the issue of the mudblood slur being thrown at a young black actress. It could be done but it might add a layer of meaning that isn't meant to be there and could be really unpleasant for the ten/eleven year old actress having to film it.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers would be great for Sirius, but is he a bit too old? Shaun Evans would be my perfect Lupin but even he's in his 40s now I think. This is fun Grin

Hermione being played by a black actress?

I think this is probable. Couldn't do it with Ron as so much is made of the family being ginger, and Harry's look is quite iconic. It's an easy win with Hermione as she has no other family in the story and her main physical attribute is just having bushy hair.

SoManyCreepyBears · 15/04/2023 15:36

Oooh How about Nicholas Hoult for James Potter?

GrimDamnFanjo · 15/04/2023 15:52

Urgh I hadn't thought of mud blood in connection with race.
The Cursed Child did feature a black actress playing the adult Hermione, so I was really hoping new casting would also.

I cannot wait to see a new cast bringing something different.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 15/04/2023 15:55

Millie Bobby Brown would be a good Tonks but the role probably isn't big enough for her.

Ooh I fancy Shaun Evans.

I want the bit where the Minister of Magic meets the Prime Minister.

GinUnicorn · 15/04/2023 19:39

Oh yes to Shaun!

Zawe Ashton would be epic as Tonks.

Alan Rickman as Snape was so totally different to how I imagined him from the books, I hope we get a proper Snape who is actually greasy, sneering, bitter and horrible. It would be really interesting to see!

A small thing - less weirdly dramatic moments like Harry almost falling out of the flying car. In the book they started out feeling triumphant then got really fed up because it was so hot and sweaty and boring.

Oh and the prefects bath. I was dying to see that.

I'm thinking David Bamber here for this reincarnation of Snape.

BertieBotts · 15/04/2023 20:36

Lupin is allowed to look a bit older because Harry notes that being a werewolf ages him.

I think Benedict is too pretty for Snape. I am no good with actors, just googled David Bamber, right kind of look but too old I think?

BertieBotts · 15/04/2023 20:43

OK just looking at this list (funny to see so many HP actors in there!)

Matthew Beard has the right kind of look IMO

Frank Dillane could be Sirius...

True, but not Thewlis old.

I thought of another bit I want to see - when the Aurors try to arrest Hagrid during OOTP and Harry et al end up seeing it during their astronomy exam. There's a bit in the book about how all the kids are cowed by seeing Hagrid really angry for the first time, with curses bouncing off him (giant's blood makes him mostly impervious) and him roaring and throwing the wizards about like ragdolls. I definitely want to see Hardcore Hagrid!

aSofaNearYou · 15/04/2023 20:44

People say it a lot but Adam Driver has the perfect look for Snape.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 15/04/2023 20:50

He does, I could definitely see him as Snape. He needs to be able to pull of an English accent though!

The fact that there was no quidditch in the Order of the Phoenix film. It's such a big part of Harry's run-ins with Umbridge and contributes to his mood/emotions throughout the school year.

DianasTeacup · 15/04/2023 21:13

Loving this thread, thank you. Very excited for the series and hoping it includes all the points people have mentioned. I'm feeling very out of touch as I don't recognise most of the actors suggested for the various roles 😳.

My DCs have never got into HP and I'm hoping that this will change with the series, they're not really movie watchers but love a good series, especially if the cast are more relatable.

GrandTheftWalrus · 15/04/2023 21:25

I hope the TV series will be good.

I love both the films and books.

MrsBungle · 15/04/2023 21:42

I agree with all the suggestions. I really hope the series lives up to my expectations! It’s so exciting!

AmyandPhilipfan · 15/04/2023 22:22

I hope they realise that the people who will be most excited for this programme are the people who read the books/saw the films as they came out - so, adults. And that this means they won't shy away from showing the more harrowing scenes.

I actually think they should start with a series for the back stories. I know that won't happen but I think it would save a lot of future flashbacks.

So the first episode would be about Voldemort's parents and grandfather and how his mother trapped his father with a love potion then stopped using it because she thought he really did love her only for him to want nothing to do with her or her baby.

Then an episode about Tom's childhood in the orphanage. Maybe showing him as normal and vulnerable to begin with but changing as he grows older.

Then an episode about him finding out he was a wizard and going to Hogwarts and his early years there.

Then an episode about Hagrid starting at Hogwarts and meeting Tom and Tom ultimately leading him to getting expelled.

Then an episode about Tom's life outside Hogwarts, applying for a teaching position, making horcruxes etc.

Then an episode about Snape's early life and meeting Lily and being excited about going to school with her only to meet James and Sirius.

Then an episode about James and his friends becoming the Marauders, making the map, picking on Snape and James falling in love with Lily.

Then an episode where Vodemort is getting powerful, gaining followers, Lucius getting Snape on side, James, Lily and Snape etc graduating.

Then an episode or two on the first wizarding war, ending with Harry 'defeating' Voldemort and maybe the series ending with Hagrid entering the bedroom and picking up baby Harry to take him to the Dursleys.

I’ve been longing for this for years! I want every single word on screen! Most especially Lupin’s back story and relationship to the Potters, Sirius and petigrew explained fully in POA. My little thing is Potterwatch in Deathly Hallows. And I want the code-named voices to be as familiar and comforting to us as old slippers by the time we get there, as they are to HRH.
