New Harry Potter TV adaptation: What details are you hoping get included?

Things that weren't in the film adaptations, either due to technology not being available to show it on film, budget, or cutting due to run time.

Little detail: in the Philosopher's Stone, one of the ways the Hogwarts letters are delivered to the Dursley house is rolled up inside a dozen eggs, passed through the window to Aunt Petunia (as the door is already nailed shut). I would love to see Aunt Petunia cracking open eggs and finding a Hogwarts letter inside each one.

Big detail: The whole scene in which the Weasley family attempt to come get Harry from Privet Drive ahead of the Quidditch World Cup, by connecting their fireplace to the Floo network, then can't get out as it's an electric fire, end up blasting half the living room apart and Fred & George "accidentally" let Dudley eat a Ton Tongue Toffee.

What's yours? One big detail and one little detail allowed each!

Michael Sheen would do a brilliant Fudge.

David Tennant could easily come back and do justice to the whole Barty Crouch Jr backstory, it was rubbish how much they missed out. I want to see drunk Winky!

Needhelp101 · 02/05/2023 09:32

Paddy Considine needs to be in it. Definitely.

And Stephen Fry is a great shout for Dumbledore.

Ooh, Emma Thompson as McGonagall? Could be interesting as she's already been in the films 😁

WoodenFloorboards · 02/05/2023 10:47

Stephen Fry as Slughorn surely.

Needhelp101 · 02/05/2023 14:58

Slughorn could work.

Whichever PP nominated Hugh Grant for Gilderoy Lockhart, you are a genius. That's essentially his character in Paddington 2!

Could we get Simon Farnarby in it somehow?

ICriedAllTheWayToTheChipShop · 02/05/2023 19:03

@Needhelp101 Paddy Considine would be a good Death Eater, he does scary and intense very well. One of Malfoy Snr's cronies. And Simon Farnaby as Professor Binns?

Actually, I can see Paddy Cosidine as Lucius Malfoy!

As you said, he does dark and intense very well.

SoManyCreepyBears · 07/05/2023 10:28

Kit Harrington for James Potter? I am now massively overthinking this!

SoManyCreepyBears · 07/05/2023 10:30

And Rose Leslie for Lily!

maybe a bit too GOT then though.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 07/05/2023 22:37

I'm hoping they go for a lot of unknowns. I don't want to watch it constantly going, "oh, it's So and So from That Thing".

Anyone under 18 will be a newcomer so a few star turns won't disappoint

dogpig · 09/05/2023 21:55

Love this thread! I've recently been re-reading and now on the start of book 5 - I really think Grimmauld place at the start of book 5 would be such a great episode! Extendable ears, Kreacher, clearing out the doxies, the screeching portraits and Molly crying over the boggart!
Trying to temper my excitement otherwise nothing will live up to it!

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 10/05/2023 10:21

Oh yes, dogpig, that would work brilliantly for an episode. Plus finding the locket and throwing it away because no-one could open it!

Coming late to this, but…

The characters looking like they’re meant to. Harry having unruly black hair and green eyes. Hermione with brown curls all over the place. Ginny being a proper bright spark.

Lots more Order of the Phoenix, especially the St Mungo’s scene. And more of what I always think of as the ‘liminal’ scenes, where they enter the magical world. I’ve always been fascinated by those bits in fantasy, and done well they could be really interesting.

Dumbledore being played by the same actor. I always found late Dumbledore rather jarring in the films.

dogpig · 10/05/2023 12:02

@SirSamVimesCityWatch yes! I read that bit earlier in the week and had completely forgotten about it. Great foreshadowing, especially with Mundungus!

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 10/05/2023 12:30

When I read the bit in Deathly Hallows when Hermione realises there was a necklace, I had to go back to OOTP to find that bit immediately. It was a proper Oh My God!! moment.

Speaking of Grimmauld Place scenes, this has to be included!

I laughed out loud at that bit in the book - really appreciating how funny JKR is this time around - see also when Harry has just tensely faught off some grindylows in GOF and moaning myrtle shows up and gives him the fright of his life

Sheldonn · 12/05/2023 13:10

Me too, that made me snort with laughter!

wonderinglywondering · 17/05/2023 20:59

Eldest DD was learning about planets which reminded me of Ron “Can I see Uranus, Lavender?” which had me howling when I first read it 😁

Jourdain11 · 17/05/2023 23:28

Also, the scene where Harry and Ron are doing their planet charts for Divination homework and end by predicting their grisly deaths at the end of the month. Prof Trelawney is very pleased and asks them to do the same for the next month 😂

AliceMcK · 17/05/2023 23:38

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 14/04/2023 17:37

Agree with the Neville / St Mungo's scene.

Also would love to see more of Neville in the battle of Hogwarts - especially when he's talking about his grandmother and how she fought off a couple of death eaters when they came for her and went on the run 😃and then when she comes through the tunnel, is told Neville is already fighting, and says "Naturally" before running off to join the fray.

Actually loads of details from the battle of Hogwarts that I want to see - Kreacher leading the Hogwarts house elves out to fight, and the recovery of Colin Creevey's body are absolutely necessary, I can't read either of those bits without sobbing.

And Harry fixing his own phoenix feather wand with the elder wand, not just breaking the bloody thing in half!

Yes definitely more of the Longbottom story especially that Neville could have been the chosen one too.

Tonks parents, also when Ted Tonks and Dean are on the run with Griphook and Harry & Hermione can hear them in the tent.

Hagrid visiting the giants and meeting Grawp. Also grawp at the battle of Hogwarts.

I also think the Quiddich World Cup was very underdone. I’d liked to have seen Winky and more about Barry Crouch Jnr escaping Azkaban.

After the 3rd book they all needed 2 movies to cover them better.

Needhelp101 · 18/05/2023 10:43

So pleased this thread is still going!

YES to the Quidditch World Cup, I was so disappointed with that in the film. Over in a few seconds 🙄

Needhelp101 · 18/05/2023 10:44

And yes to Neville's story. I'll be very interested to see who they get to play him.
