Baby names that will never make a come back

I think there was a thread along these lines a few months ago but I couldn't find it so I thought I'd start another one.

Here are a few of the names that my friends' parents were called when I was growing up that I can't imagine anyone ever calling a baby........

Elaine
Yvonne
Jackie
Sheila
Pat
Pauline
Tina
Joan

Mark
Paul
Ray
Nigel
Alan
Ken
Neville
Brian

I also thought about highly unlikely names for baby twins in 2023 and came up with a few....

Malcolm and Wendy
Jason and Sandra
Russell and Paula
Gary and Judith

Any others?

Rita
Janice
Diane
Paula
Maureen
Gillian
Anne
Gwenda
Glenys
Brenda
Claire
Bernadette

Colin
Norman
Eric
Geoffrey
Timothy
Derek
Brian
Lewis

They are awful names and unpopular now but may be popular again in future decades.

I don't mind Sheila and Elaine or Mark or Paul but they are not used much.

LuluBlakey1 · 26/03/2023 21:29

Oh Malcolm- no!

Sadik · 26/03/2023 21:31

Aethalbald
Eadwig
Wulthryth
I was going to add Aelfthryth but I can just imagine a little Aelfthryth known as Elfie in certain circles

I know someone with a baby Reggie.

Reggie is an extremely popular name round my way.

I disagree. I can tell you categorically that it wasn’t so long ago Arthur was considered a truly awful name. Now people are calling their sons Arthur. Likewise dh was appalled when a couple he knows called their daughter Elsie.
In time all names reappear.

How long ago?

There’s always Ughtred. (Child who plays a major part in a Frances Hodgson Burnett novel).

Possibly the worst name of all time.

RuthW · 26/03/2023 21:38

My dd would have been Eric if she was a boy 26 years ago. Her name is along the same lines and unheard of then. It's top ten now unfortunately

Charlottewebsbabies · 26/03/2023 21:40

When I was pregnant 26 years ago,I wanted my baby to have her own first name but her middle name to be her great grandmother's (or grandads if she had been a boy)
As it was,the name was lousia but if my grandad had married either of her sisters, she would have been name Nancy or name Doris
Both where unbelievably old fashioned at the time
Now I've met endless Nancy's and one Doris
If she'd been a boy,she would have been name leonard-i was told that I couldn't call her leonard as it was an 'old man's name'-ive met 3 len/lennie/Leonards over the last year

Dp and I where saying that his dad and his twin where called Derek and roger-younger brother Peter
We where laughing at a baby Derek or a baby Roger but it may work out that I get handed a baby with those names when I have great grandchildren
His mum is a lucy-timeless

My aunt is a joan-unthinkable 26 years ago
Along with Amanda,Sheila and cherry-all names of my aunts
My uncles where Mike (Micheal),Bob,(robert) steve,Cyril and dick (richard)
You just wouldn't name a child 'dick' these days but to us he was 'uncle dick'

My grandparents on the other side where fredrick and Sylvia-both back in fashion but not when I had my first-both names where just old fashioned and awful to the ear

Odd how some names don't date and others do but come back

Dacadactyl · 26/03/2023 21:41

I like Mark, Pauline, Paul and Joyce.

Don't think any of these will make a comeback though:

Cyril
Clive
Cliff
Trevor

Mildred
Maud (altho I do know a 16 yo Maud!!)
Ethel

Katypp · 26/03/2023 21:41

Loving the way people don't realise that the very names that are regularly described as 'georgous' on here sound absolutely ridiculous to me anyone 50+ on here. I distinctly remember comiserating with a woman at work as it was expected her baby would be called Alfred as it was the family name. Whoever heard of a baby Alf she said. Well, 10 years later, we were knee deep in Alfies and Archies and other ies rooted in the (to my ear) awful old names of the past.

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 26/03/2023 21:42

Well of course they will. Both my great grandmother's were called Ada. Just a few years ago, I couldn't have imagined anyone naming their child that. Yet here we are!

SnottyLottie · 26/03/2023 21:43

I’ve come across a baby Sheila, a baby Eileen and a baby Barbara in the past year (work). I’ve also come across a 10 year old Brian.

I think the middle aged people’s name are coming back around in fashion.

Butterwicky · 26/03/2023 21:43

I don't think the female versions of male names will come around again, eg
Pauline
Paula
Geraldine
Willheima (sp)
Andrea

But I could be wrong!

Then of course there are the ones with obvious bad associations eg Boris.

NBLarsen · 26/03/2023 21:43

Of your list, I know an Yvonne, Joan, Mark, Ray and Brian, all of whom are age under 10.

mum2jakie · 26/03/2023 21:44

Next doors have a baby called Ray and I know a teenage Sheila.

Echobelly · 26/03/2023 21:44
