I think there was a thread along these lines a few months ago but I couldn't find it so I thought I'd start another one.

Here are a few of the names that my friends' parents were called when I was growing up that I can't imagine anyone ever calling a baby........

Elaine
Yvonne
Jackie
Sheila
Pat
Pauline
Tina
Joan

Mark
Paul
Ray
Nigel
Alan
Ken
Neville
Brian

I also thought about highly unlikely names for baby twins in 2023 and came up with a few....

Malcolm and Wendy
Jason and Sandra
Russell and Paula
Gary and Judith

Any others?

There were twins in dds school called Reggie and Doris! I mean to me they are old people names buy clearly not to their parents!
You only need a famous footballer called Darren and there you go.

Thanks @pinkspaghetti

I opened the thread and thought hopefully my name would appear and you didn't.disappoint me 😊
It's an awful name and should definitely never make a comeback.

I know a young Jean.

Gaylord
Percy
Jolyon
Ethel
Beryl

Percy is definitely making a comeback! I've met 3 in the last year all toddlers/babies

Karen and Alexa.

Narwhaleahoy · 26/03/2023 21:51

It does depend on your age of course, and past associations with ‘older’ names. I would shudder at the thought of naming a child Sheila, Andrea or Elaine (or worst of all Deirdre), but to someone without those connotations all would sound lovely.
But not Norman. That is a hideous name.

Fluffawuffla · 26/03/2023 21:54

I know the following children under 5 years:
Joy (names after grandparent called Joyce)
Susan
Jean
Joan
Percy

The ones that are really dying out here are :
Paul
Gary
Darren
Louise
Claire

i don’t know anyone under 40 with those names. But, in another 40 years when that generation starts dying off, they’ll have revival.

Fluffawuffla · 26/03/2023 21:56

Oh yes there I met a 3 year old Doris at the park

WeakTeaStrongMe · 26/03/2023 21:57

I don’t think Mark and Paul have gone away

Trevor

Lorraine
Gillian

Nah, some of those will come back. We've got babies now called Ada and Elsie and Iris- all names when I was growing up that were "granny names" and which people would have said were never coming back.

pinkspaghetti · 26/03/2023 22:01

I would love to be privy to some of the conversations hipster couples have about naming their babies and trying to pick a name that's so unfashionable that it's cool in an ironic way.

Bert.

pinkspaghetti · 26/03/2023 22:03

If there are any hipster couples expecting twins I dare you to go with Grant and Janice.......

I met a baby Ronnie the other day. Both he and his mum were cool as can be.

Some of you need to work in primary schools for a while. A lot of these names on here are in use, we have 2 little Denises plus Eileens and a Jeff, Ian and Judith at school where I work.

dreamersdown · 26/03/2023 22:08

theres a toddler Doris at my DC’s nursery! Known as Dorrie.

fyn · 26/03/2023 22:09

Maud and Percy were on our shortlist for our 4 month old 😂

RosaBonheur · 26/03/2023 22:10

I know someone with a baby Joan.

Sillybanana · 26/03/2023 22:11

Didn’t frank and Christine lampard call their baby Patricia? That’s a real oldie

Alwayswonderedwhy · 26/03/2023 22:11

Jean has already made a comeback. Very trendy name.

Iain and Alan

Iain Collins (Talk TV) was on recently saying he had asked his mother why she'd named him as a sound. He kept saying his name was pathetic as it's just 'eeen'!
