Baby names that will never make a come back

I think there was a thread along these lines a few months ago but I couldn't find it so I thought I'd start another one.

Here are a few of the names that my friends' parents were called when I was growing up that I can't imagine anyone ever calling a baby........

Elaine
Yvonne
Jackie
Sheila
Pat
Pauline
Tina
Joan

Mark
Paul
Ray
Nigel
Alan
Ken
Neville
Brian

I also thought about highly unlikely names for baby twins in 2023 and came up with a few....

Malcolm and Wendy
Jason and Sandra
Russell and Paula
Gary and Judith

Any others?

They’ll all come back, sooner or later.

midnightblue12 · 26/03/2023 20:56

I just can't imagine a baby being born being called Ian 🙈

TulipsLilacs · 26/03/2023 20:57

I remember when Grace was an old lady name. I'd never heard of a young one when I was a kid. It was popular by the time I had kids. Same as Arthur, Stanley, Archie, Alfie, George

This is so stupid.

If Ada, Violet, Evelyn, Robert, Henry and Archie are coming back now then all the other "ancient" names will come back at some point.

I think and hope Adolf and Genghis will always remain unpopular.

I would put good money on some of the above names never coming back......

My baby’s name is on this thread 🤣, I agree with some of your list op .

BigWheels · 26/03/2023 20:59

Through various baby groups and childcare setting we have met babies Derek, Ray and Roger which are all names I would not have imagined making a comeback.

I don't think Norman or Doris will make a comeback.

@BigWheels I love that somewhere out there, there is a baby called Roger!

I rather like sheila! It’s not got a dissimilar sound to ameilia or Elsie both of which have been super popular and now starting to wane.
I’ve met a few baby Alan’s recently! Also a Percy and more than one Stanley. I was more surprised by a girl called Mary in year 3, and a Danielle in year 2. Don’t hear either of them much for little kids now!

FlutterbButterfly · 26/03/2023 21:03

I teach (not in a school) around 300 kids a week.

I currently have a Brian, Barry and Alan. Even have had a Donald! Also a Joan which to me is a lovely name 😊.

OP, you mentioned Reggie, that's really not that unusual at the Moment, teach 3 and have 1 in my extended family.

SecondhandMuck · 26/03/2023 21:04

I'm sure in the 1980s people would have said 'the names Edith and Elsie are never coming back'. And yet here we are. Knee deep in Elsies and Ediths.

Nearly everything comes back round again, be it flares, or beards, or old fashioned names.

RosaBonheur · 26/03/2023 21:04

I think Elaine is really pretty.

SmallbutMighty1 · 26/03/2023 21:05

I teach a 4 year old Brian. Common in Polish/Czech/African families in our school. Have taught a few.

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 26/03/2023 21:05

I think, given I have actually heard of babies called Hilda and Maud in recent items (isn’t Jennie McAlpine’s daughter called Maud?), I don’t think we can write off any of the old-fashioned names!

There were a lot of names that were fashionable when I was young that I don’t see making a comeback any time soon - names that aren’t weird or awful, but just very much of their time. I think back to my class at school and the local children - Gareth, Justine, Laura, Jason, Brett, Nick, Lorna, Joanne, Kim, Carl, Neil, Samantha, Scott, Julie (two of those)… they’re all very much of an era. Even names like Louise and Steven that are fairly universal somehow don’t sound quite right for a baby.

EmbracingTheEyeBags · 26/03/2023 21:05

Gary

Risengrød · 26/03/2023 21:05

Myra
Vicky
Karen
Wendy (Mumsnet users might avoid)
Bertha
Fanny

justasoul · 26/03/2023 21:06

My DD’s middle name is in the OP Grin - I’d have used as a first name but it was DMIL’s name so I left the choice to DH… DD has a friend with it as a first name though. They’re early teens.

Hitler

Did you mean Adolf?

I think Beryl and Malcolm will not be popular again.

My mother and two of her closest friends have made that list! 😁

SecondhandMuck · 26/03/2023 21:07

some people are in for a shock when their grandchild is handed to them in 30 years' time.

DarkDarkNight · 26/03/2023 21:07

I know a couple of little kids called Ray so I think it’s in the same kind of category as Reggie, Sid, Archie rather than the ‘never to be used again’ category.

I agree with some mentioned already - I can’t imagine a baby Maureen, Hilda, Sandra. I don’t think Lesley/Leslie for boys or girls will either. I can think of more female ones than male - maybe Cedric, Roger, Gordon.

fionaapple · 26/03/2023 21:08

I could see Ray coming back... 'he's our little ray of sunshine'. Someone else said Jean which I've seen a few people use as a middle name recently.

changer121 · 26/03/2023 21:09

Maureen
