I think there was a thread along these lines a few months ago but I couldn't find it so I thought I'd start another one.

Here are a few of the names that my friends' parents were called when I was growing up that I can't imagine anyone ever calling a baby........

Elaine
Yvonne
Jackie
Sheila
Pat
Pauline
Tina
Joan

Mark
Paul
Ray
Nigel
Alan
Ken
Neville
Brian

I also thought about highly unlikely names for baby twins in 2023 and came up with a few....

Malcolm and Wendy
Jason and Sandra
Russell and Paula
Gary and Judith

Any others?

Just thought of another, I didn’t see it but may have missed it, Shirley, I can’t imagine a baby Shirley.

I think Elaine and Sheila are lovely names.

I met a baby called Alan last month and was silently horrified 🙈

Lots of the names mentioned here are still in use, albeit some in small numbers. Check here to see how many registrations:

My mum, born 1948, always used to say she was the last Joan. She would be amazed to hear that it’s being used again.

Derek
Malcolm
Keith
Gary
Tracey
Joan
Jean

I think Sharon will come back one day. It’s actually a beautiful name and I can see why it became over-popular.

Jackie could make a comeback, as could Susan as Susie is such a cute nickname. I met a young girl called Amanda recently and I thought that would not be back for a while but it is lovely.

waterlego · 26/03/2023 21:11

Agree with your assessment on all of those and would add that twins called Ian and Brenda would be a surprise.

When the early 20th C names started to come back in again a while ago (Stanley, Frank, Mabel, Violet etc), I wondered whether Doris might come back. One of my Grandmas was a Doris and I actually think it’s fabulous but whenever I float the idea that it could make a comeback, no one in RL agrees with me 😂 Probably just as well I’m not having any more children ‘cause I could be tempted!

😂😂😂 poor boy.

I had a friend called Lily at school .We all laughed at her name and thought it was hilarious .This was in the 80's .Names are definitely very cyclical.

Joan from Mad Men gave that name a bit of pizazz. I can imagine a hipster couple calling their daughter Joan.

God yes! Janet! So harsh, particularly in a Hull accent.

My name is one of those on the first list. It was even unfashionable by the time I was born (1962).
I quite like it now, but don't think it will ever make a comeback.

Siobhan (my own name), there was 3 other girls called Siobhan in my class in school (went to a Catholic school in London) but I don't think I've ever met anyone younger than me with the name.

Littlegoth · 26/03/2023 21:21

@Poppins2016 We were down for Bruce with my first pregnancy (sadly ended in miscarriage) and Ray was our pick if my current pregnancy had been a boy, so you are not wrong!

DustyOwl · 26/03/2023 21:25

Clare or Claire
Never taught one or heard of one and it never gets mentioned.

AlwaysLatte · 26/03/2023 21:27

I think those names aren't old enough yet. Bet they do make an appearance again! Jackie/Jacqueline is lovely.
