Baby names that will never make a come back

I think there was a thread along these lines a few months ago but I couldn't find it so I thought I'd start another one.

Here are a few of the names that my friends' parents were called when I was growing up that I can't imagine anyone ever calling a baby........

Elaine
Yvonne
Jackie
Sheila
Pat
Pauline
Tina
Joan

Mark
Paul
Ray
Nigel
Alan
Ken
Neville
Brian

I also thought about highly unlikely names for baby twins in 2023 and came up with a few....

Malcolm and Wendy
Jason and Sandra
Russell and Paula
Gary and Judith

Any others?

I know someone with a baby Reggie.

I disagree. I can tell you categorically that it wasn’t so long ago Arthur was considered a truly awful name. Now people are calling their sons Arthur. Likewise dh was appalled when a couple he knows called their daughter Elsie.
In time all names reappear.

FlounderingFruitcake · 26/03/2023 20:42

I know young kids with almost half of those names OP- Brian, Mark, Jason, Jackie, Joan and Tina.
Plus Bruce as mentioned by a PP.

Most of them were DD’s daycare chums from when we lived in the states so they’d 4-6 now.

If the last 40 years has taught us anything about names, is that fashions will always been cyclical. If, 20 years ago anyone had suggested that names like Ada, Wilfred or Arthur would ever come back into fashion it would have sounded ridiculous. The same is true of Derek, Nigel, Angela, Joanne & Sharon today.

LazJaz · 26/03/2023 20:43

I love Yvonne - Yves nn

don’t think we will be seeing many baby Colins any time soon

JumbledE · 26/03/2023 20:45

I feel like Maud and Janet aren't going to race to the top 100 but who knows what the future trends will be!

VeryQuaintIrene · 26/03/2023 20:46

Myra.

CoraDora · 26/03/2023 20:46

I know a 2 year old Mark. I think Paul, Simon, Peter, Andrew, John, David will all come back into fashion

I can't imagine anyone calling a baby:

Hilda
Gertrude
Deirdre
Beryl
Audrey

Donald
Roy
Herbert
Ronald

But I expect if I heard a baby with one of those names I would change my mind.

TheDuchessOfMN · 26/03/2023 20:46

Sandra
Barbara
Paula
Doris
Nicola
Linda
Tracey

Kevin
Colin
Derek
Brian
Barry

I actually think names like Jaden, kayden etc will be very dated soon too, if not already.

Hilda and Joan are already back.

And I have a friend with a baby grandchild called Raymond and another friend with a grandchild called Stanley.

Id agree that Adolf might be the exception.

Cyril and Cecil are names which are unlikely to come back. Many of the others mentioned, especially the Biblical names, will come back round again.

Stanley has been very popular for 5/6 years now. There’s probably at least 1 in every school. We know a few.

I'm not sure but I do wonder if the names you've posted will come back into fashion.

If you look at the most popular names from 100 years ago some of them you wouldn't imagine being trendy again (Brenda, Pauline, Janet, Gertrude, Edna, Phyllis etc) but some of them are becoming more popular again/I know young children called it (Elsie, Mabel, Ivy Florence, Violet)

Julie
Diane
Valerie
Dawn
Andrea

Howard
Gordon
Geoffrey
Maurice

Names of some of the kids in my year (left school in 1990). I can’t see any being chosen for babies in 2023 but I do like some of them.

No, just outside Sheffield. One had a brother called Arthur so the family obviously liked older names.

LindorDoubleChoc · 26/03/2023 20:54

This is so stupid.

If Ada, Violet, Evelyn, Robert, Henry and Archie are coming back now then all the other "ancient" names will come back at some point.

I think and hope Adolf and Genghis will always remain unpopular.

hadenoughforever · 26/03/2023 20:55

I could see Tina and Ray making a comeback quite soon.

I met a baby Bruce not long ago, which was a surprise but it suited him!

I have a friend with a young Bruce, I really like it!
