I think there was a thread along these lines a few months ago but I couldn't find it so I thought I'd start another one.

Here are a few of the names that my friends' parents were called when I was growing up that I can't imagine anyone ever calling a baby........

Elaine
Yvonne
Jackie
Sheila
Pat
Pauline
Tina
Joan

Mark
Paul
Ray
Nigel
Alan
Ken
Neville
Brian

I also thought about highly unlikely names for baby twins in 2023 and came up with a few....

Malcolm and Wendy
Jason and Sandra
Russell and Paula
Gary and Judith

Any others?

My granny was called Fanny. Not Frances or anything more acceptable, just Fanny. May she, and her name, RIP.

you've probably seen it but your post reminded me of the 'granny was a Fanny' ad from Irn Bru

Baby, IRN-BRU advert

Say hello to baby.

That was one I mentioned. Definitely one that's fallen into obsolescence and will remain there for some time. Even the Enid Blyton Fanny was updated to Frannie, and Dick, I think, to Rick.

Oh really?! No one should take baby name advice from me then!🙂

I work in paediatrics and you would be surprised how many boy/boy twins are named Ronnie & Reggie at the moment (aged 5 and under!)

lljkk · 27/03/2023 21:53

I'd only bet against long abandoned biblical names, like Othniel, Heber, Jephthah, Mehetable. The rest will come back.

I feel like Maud and Janet aren't going to race to the top 100 but who knows what the future trends will be!

There is a Janet in my grandson's nursery class.

I heard of one born last year.

drspouse · 27/03/2023 22:33

My friend who's a church youth worker met a young Jepthah the other day!

LittleMousewithcloggson · 27/03/2023 22:50

There’s a 3 year old called Maud living near us
Her twin sister is Lilian
They were named after their 2 great grandmothers
Older brother is Maurice - but he’s known as Rix!

BrandyandGinger · 27/03/2023 22:54

Maud and Lilian are lovely names for twins, not match-y but of the same era.

I do baby immunisations and have seen a massive resurgence in the “nursing home” names over the years, such as Elsie, Edith, Stanley, George etc.

Now seeing a move to sixties names such as Nancy, Debbie, Vincent, Reggie, Barbara, Bruce.

I’m sure it won’t be long before we see those seventies names come along - Claire, Mark, Louise, Steve, Emma, Christopher.

Hopefully a lot of the eighties names will stay away!

I do find myself raising an eyebrow at some of the names I see. Who looks at a baby and thinks “he looks like a Wilfred” and “she’s a gorgeous little Ethel”.

I loved my nanna to bits but her name was Alma and even she said it was old fashioned and hated it. My grandad was called Eric which apart from Simon Cowel I can't see anyone using it today.

A friend of mine has 2 boys Eric and Ernie, both under 7.

I am convinced that Derek will make a comeback! I think it's pretty cool.

I looked at my ds and thought he "looked like a Wilfred" twenty six years ago... I'm glad I did!! ☺ ☺ ☺

LawksaMercyMissus · 28/03/2023 09:00

Four generations of my family have one of these names....eldest son has always carried on the tradition until it got to my brother and he refused. Didn't go down well!

😄 does it suit him?! Isn’t it funny how we view names. To me Wilfred is a grandad name, I can’t imagine looking at a baby and thinking yes he’s a Wilfred.

But then I can’t imagine looking at a baby and giving it a cutesy name that I can’t see it carrying into adulthood if you know what I mean.

Naming a baby is a minefield!
