Chester Draws, in a parallel universe

Somewhere this week on MN, I've seen someone write about 'the luck of the drawer' - which still makes sense, as if there's a huge chest of many, many drawers & you have to pick one to open, without knowing what's inside any of them.

I forgot one. I was once a property manager and I got an email from a tenant requesting that I ask the cleaners to "hover over the carpet on the stairs" 😂

These are malapropisms named after Mrs Makaprop by Sheridan in mid 1700s iirc.

A man of great statue.

Mrs Malaprop not Makaprop!

😮I’ve just had a look online to see what I should be saying instead (‘off your own bat’)!
Please tell me I’m not the only one on here that has been saying it wrong all these years 😳.

Nope, not just you, I always thought it was back too!

TreesAtSea · 14/03/2023 19:24

The item which you a ledge I didn't return.

I remember someone at work sending around an email about his team's 'floorless' execution.

They hung him?

pointythings · 14/03/2023 19:47

I wonder whether a lot of these have arisen because people don't read as much as they did (other than online). There's nothing like books to improve your spelling.

WelHong · 14/03/2023 19:50

I love these (well, I don't, but you know what I mean).

I've never heard 'pedal stool' before, but I now intend to use it at every possible opportunity.

Persay needs to be on the list.

KnickerlessParsons · 14/03/2023 21:00

Anyone else live in a culdy sack?

holierthanthou73 · 14/03/2023 21:18

Whalla as opposed to Viola
Prolly instead of probably

pointythings · 14/03/2023 21:20

I also hate it when people use 'pedal' when they mean 'peddle'. Aaaaargh I am not British and I can manage this.

I'm glad you said that as I was trying to work it out!

They hung him?

Hanged.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 14/03/2023 21:52

One of our local shops (chain, not a little independent) has a sale corner that includes a neatly labelled basket of Christmas bobbles.

Alpiniste · 14/03/2023 22:05

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 14/03/2023 21:50

Hanged.

Indeed! Floorless Execution

TokyoSushi · 14/03/2023 16:46

I axed him.

I no.

Between that and the ‘floorless execution’ you’re coming up with some alarming images.

I recently heard rumours about electrocution lessons to improve children’s confidence.

GBoucher · 15/03/2023 02:58

I had a friend who thought minging was an adjective not a verb. 'That's mingen.'

TomPinch · 15/03/2023 04:29

I remember reading that students should be allowed to get drunk as lords and disturb the neighbourhood because it's a right of passage.

No I did it for years too, learned what it really was on MN! If you're not into cricket I think "our" way makes logical sense and the right way makes no sense!

I have to say, if I'm thinking faster than I can type then my fingers do type some of these. I do a lot of writing at work and my SPAG is impeccable - once I check over all the shit I wrote at speed Blush

things like on route and right of passage I would definitely do!

It is an adjective, though.

Your bedroom is a midden... it's minging.

I've heard it being used as a verb (to ming), e.g., she mings for Britain.

Also, if it isn't a verb, how do you end up with minger? What a minger.

GBoucher · 15/03/2023 07:55

Well, it's definitely a verb.

JarByTheDoor · 15/03/2023 08:13

You can turn a verb into an adjective by adding -ing.
